Matthew Henry Stockton (also known as Moreland)

I'm trying to trace Matthew Henry Stockton my maternal grandfather, born about 1875 at Ludworth, Co. Durham, England. He married Jane Robinson in Dec 1892 and was a Coal Miner (Hewer). I do know from 1901 he was living in Seaham, Co Durham but can't find him (using the censuses) prior to that, he died in 1939. Anyone have any information or ideas as to how I can find him, thanks

Hi Susie,
Thanks for looking.
I had made some progress since my post and already have her on 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses. She is still missing in 1871. Job was short for Joseph and her children were actually born in various different places including Ellesmere, Wolverhampton and Chester (I have the certificates). They lived and settled in Ellesmere Port, where they were in 1901. Her age in 1901 is very hard to read, but i think it says 35, which fits in with a birth date of 1865/1866. I have sent you a message offline,
Thanks again
Karen

Hello again, Karen.
I found your Jane on the 1901. She said she was 29 - which gives her a birthdate of 1872, not 1866. He husband's name was JOB, not Joseph.
Their children were NOT born in Ellesmere Port - they were born in Ellesmere in Shropshire, on the Chshire border - very nice rural area on the canal.
Looking for more...
Susie

Hello, Stephanie.
I'm Susie Stockton-Link, the Sec of the Stockton Society.
I am in touch with Andrew Stockton of Great Boughton, Chester, and his dad, Ken of Walsham-le-Willows, Suffolk. They are of the same line as you - the Speaight connection. They have the Stocktons back to Samuel & Mary Stockton, whose son, Samuel, was born either 18 May 1811 or 31 July 1810 and was baptised in St Mary, Whitechapel, Stepney.
Andrew is doing a yDNA profile through the Society, which should answer some questions. They have extensive information about the family BELOW the ancestors given above. We are hoping the yDNA will give some answers to the question about where they came from originally. Please contact me on cestrienneatgooglemail.com
Cheers
Susie

Edy's first husband was Elias Eden. Elias was a brother to my Jonathan Eden and were sons of James Eden. 1840 Izard Co., Ark. shows Edy and Elias with one son and also a female 5-10 who does not show up on census again. The son would be John. Second son would be Jonathan who was born in MO 1840 so Edy and Elias were in Mo by census time. Elias was gone by Aug. 1844 when she married Elliot Stockton. His first wife Jency Hopper had died. Elliot and Edy were apparantly divorced though I can't find the record. Elliot married again to Nancy M. Payne. She is turn married Hugh Wilson after Elliot's death.

My ancestor is Jonathon Eden, the son of Edy Blythe Eden Stockton. You mention in an early blog (1999) that Edy and Elliot Stockton married after spouses died and left each with two children. Do you know the names of the spouses? The name of Jonathan's father is unknown.

Any aid you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Bianca Eden

Sarah Parvin Rowe Allen's mother was a Stockton
Since I was in grade school I remember my grandmother saying that we were related to Richard Stockton who signed the Declaration on Independence. I have been looking into this off and on since the 1990s. Well, it had been under my nose since 2001 and I did not realize it until several weeks ago. I was going through some info that my Aunt had left me when I found a very old obit that was hard to read. However, I will do my best and hope someone can make a connection.

Let me first state that Sarah P. Rowe was the daughter of Daniel Row and Elizabeth Unkown last name. They made their home in Lancaster County, Pa. To the best of my knowledge Daniel is listed as being born in Pa. and Elizabeth has census listings as Pa. and N.J. Both Daniel and Elizabeth were born around 1795....give or take a year or two. This obit may have been from a Baltimore, Md. paper.

Sarah married Lewis Allen from York County. Nathaniel D. R. Allen listed in the obit is her son. The D.R. may be Daniel Rowe (for her dad). Towson referred to in the obit is in Baltimore County, Maryland.

OBIT....
Sarah Parvin Allen died at the home of her son N.D.R. Allen, Towson Sunday morning at 10 o'clock in the 82nd year of her age, after an illess of about three weeks. The first states of her illness was caused by dispepsis, which aggravated other troubles and finally left her in a weakened condition, and owing to advanced age, she was unable to rally and died as above stated.
Mrs. Allen was born in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pa., April 23, 1821. Her maided name was Rowe and her mother was a Stockton of New Jersey, a relative of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence by that name.

The remainder of this article is almost completely missing except for the date 1818 followed by...what looks like SHE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE. Remember the 1818 was not her date of birth it was 1821.

Sarah Allen died December 28, 1902.

This probably means that my Daniel Row/Rowe was married to Elizabeth Stockton and their daughter was Sarah Parvin Rowe Allen. Incidently, Sarah is buried in Fawn Grove Friends Cemetery in Fawn Grove, York County, Pa. along with her husband Lewis Allen. Their children were Amy Stockton Allen, Nathaniel D. R. Allen, Mary R. Allen and Sarah E. Allen.

My line is...
I am Henrietta LINDA Frew Zinger, the daughter of Miles Eckman Frew and Henrietta Katherine Wagner, Always used the name Linda through life....never Henrietta..

Miles Eckman Frew was the son of James Edgar Frew and Laura Viola Eckman

Laura Viola Eckman was the daughter of James Martin Eckman and Anna Elnora Myers

Anna Elnora Myers was the daughter of Jacob Myers and Mary B. Row/Rowe.

Mary B. Row was the daughter of Daniel Row and Eliabeth Stockton and the sister of Sarah Parvin Rowe.

Hope someone can help me tie Elizabeth to the Stockton's of New Jersey as the obit state. I will inform this genforum if I find the answer first.

CORRECTION....NEWTON D, R, Allen NOT Nathaniel D. R. Allen.

Do you know if anyone is "manning" the Stockton DNA project? I've emailed twice with no response. I'd like to have my husband's DNA done to compare to others...but wouldn't know how to read it. He's of the William Granville Stockton of MO line...supposedly descended from Davis of VA, but I find a lot of gaps in the "proofs", so am not sure I believe them. Betty Jo

Do you know if he had a daughter Esther Katherine that married Elias Shafer In Tecumsch, Kansas March 14, 1869 and had children Etta Mae, Rosa J, Irwin or Irvin, Tona, Andrew L, Fred, Leona Edna and Elias Franklin Shafer. Fred Shater was my great grandfather.

Wanda

In my posting "Andrew J. Stockton of Stockton's Valley" I wrote that in the 1850 Pettis County, Missouri census Andrew's last name was spelled "Stocton."
In PJ's reply she posted that in the 1850 Pettis County, Missouri census Andrew's last name was spelled "Stockton."
The original census record clearly shows his name to be spelled "Stocton."

I wrote that in the 1880 Jasper County, Missouri census that Andrew's last name was spelled "Stocton."
In PJ's reply she posted that in the 1880 Jasper County, Missouri census Andrew's last name was spelled "Stockton."
Again, the original census record clearly shows his name to be spelled "Stocton."

I wrote that in the 1900 Jasper County, Missouri census that Andrew Stockton was shown as 77 years old.
In PJ's reply she posted that in the 1900 Jasper County, Missouri census Andrew Stockton was shown as 72 years old.
Not only does the census record show his age to be 77, but it also clearly shows him to be born in July of 1823.

There are also other items in PJ's reply that are clearly INCORRECT.
In PJ's reply she posted that in the 1850 Pettis County, Missouri census that Rosanna was born in "IL."
The 1850 census clearly shows Rosanna was born in "Ala."
In PJ's reply she posted that in the 1880 Jasper County, Missouri census Elizabeth E. Stockton, 16, was listed as "other."
First, her name is clearly shown as Elisabeth E. and NOT Elizabeth E.
Second, only Andrew's last name is shown and it is Stocton and NOT Stockton.
Third, Elisabeth E. was NOT shown as "other."

All of the above census records are easy to read.

Jerry Stockton

Andrew J. Stockton of Stockton's Valley, Kentucky

It appears that Andrew J. Stockton, who on 10 March 1848 married Rosannah Martin, was the son of Daniel 5 and Rebecca (nee Smith) Stockton. The 1830 Cumberland County, Kentucky census records show that Daniel 5 and Rebecca Stockton, who were living in Stockton’s Valley, had four sons born before the 1830 census. In 1836 Cumberland County was split and Stockton’s Valley was now in the newly created Clinton County. These four sons are shown on the 1840 Clinton County census records, two are 10-15 and two are 15-20. Three of these four sons can be found in the 1850 Clinton County census records. Hiram 6 Stockton and Lemuel 6 Stockton were both married by 1850 with families of their own. James 6 Stockton, age 22, was living with his widowed mother, Rebecca Stockton, and her younger children. One son of Daniel 5 and Rebecca (nee Smith) Stockton was not living in Clinton County in 1850. Andrew J. 6 Stockton was living in Pettis County, Missouri, in 1850.

1850 Pettis County, Missouri, Andrew J. Stocton, 24, born in Kentucky.
1860 Atchison County, Kansas, Andrew J. Stockton, 34, born in Kentucky.
1870 Andrew J. Stockton not found.
1880 Jasper County, Missouri, Andrew Stocton, 57, born in Kentucky.
1900 Jasper County, Missouri, Andrew Stockton, 77, born in Kentucky.

Daniel 5 Stockton was a son of “Smith Creek” John 4 and Margaret “Peggy” Stockton. Daniel 5 Stockton married a neighbor, Rebecca Smith, on 12 June 1820, and he appears to have died on 15 Sept 1838. In 1856 the heirs of Daniel 5 Stockton signed a deed to Mary Ann Craig. This deed was destroyed during the Civil War. However, it was later recreated and signed by five of the surviving heirs. Andrew J. Stockton was one of the surviving heirs of Daniel 5 Stockton who signed this recreated deed. The other surviving heirs of Daniel 5 Stockton who signed this deed were Hiram Stockton, Lemuel L. Stockton, Margaret (nee Stockton) Braswell and Nancy (nee Stockton) Dowell.

Andrew J. Stockton named a son Daniel after his father, and a daughter Rebecca after his mother. He named his first son Hiram after his oldest brother Hiram Carl Stockton, and named a son James Carroll after his brothers, James Stockton and Carrol Stockton.

Jerry Stockton
"One Jesse 3 Stockton"

The "One Jesse 3 Stockton" theory is that the only Jesse 3 Stockton was Jesse 3 (Thomas 2, Davis 1) Stockton. In his will Thomas 2 Stockton, Sr., left his plantation to his son "Jessee." The "Two Jesse 3 Stocktons" theory is that there was also a Jesse 3 (Samuel 2, Davis 1) Stockton. The two major problems for the "Two Jesse 3 Stocktons" theory is that there are no records that show two different Jesse 3 Stocktons, and the will of Samuel 2 Stockton did NOT mention a son Jesse.

Mr. Catalano posted the following information about the "One Jesse 3 Stockton" theory.

"It has come to my attention that a theory proposing there is only one Jesse Stockton (Jesse 3, Thomas 2, Davis 1) exists. This theory is completely based on tax records from Virginia in the late 1780s and early 1790s." Mr. Catalano is NOT telling the truth about this.

My paper that Mr. Catalano is referring to includes will records, deed records for Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky, tax records for Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky, census records for North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana, court records for North Carolina, marriage records for Virginia and Kentucky, and much more. Yet Mr. Catalano states that the "One Jesse 3 Stockton" theory "is completely based on tax records from Virginia in the late 1780s and early 1790s." Mr. Catalano is WRONG about this, and he knows he is WRONG.

If anyone would like a copy of my paper, "Jesse 3 and Mary (nee Hays) Stockton of Albemarle County, Virginia" please let me know. Mr. Catalano was NOT telling the truth when he wrote that "Census records prove conclusively" that there was a Jesse 3 (Samuel 2, Davis 1) Stockton. Mr. Catalano was also NOT telling the truth when he wrote that I believed my Stockton family was related to the New Jersey family until DNA proved otherwise. And Mr. Catalano is NOT telling the truth when he states that the "One Jesse 3 Stockton" theory is completely based on tax records from Virginia in the late 1780's and early 1790's.

On one of Mr. Catalano's sites he shows Davis 1 Stockton as born in Flushing, Queens, New York, and that he was married to Sarah Anthony Gudylouch. Any serious Stockton family researcher will quickly realize that Mr. Catalano's research is full of pure guesswork. Just as he presents NO evidence that Samuel 2 Stockton had a son Jesse, he presents NO evidence that Davis Stockton was born in Flushing, Queens, New York, or that Sarah Stockton's maiden name was Gudylouch.

I have asked Mr. Catalano to post the census records he claims "prove conclusively" that there was a Jesse 3 (Samuel 2, Davis 1) Stockton. So far he has not posted these census records. This claim by Mr. Catalano is NOT to be believed.

I have a very good photocopy of T. J. Stockton's 1898 book that I can send by snail mail. T. J. Stockton is the source of the "Two Jesse 3 Stocktons" theory. You can decide for yourself if you think T. J. Stockton's information about Samuel 2 Stockton is credible, I don't think that it is. I know for a fact that Mr. Catalano's information is not credible.

Jerry Stockton
Mr. Catalano,

You posted the following information.

"Census records prove conclusively there was another Jesse Stockton (Jesse 3, Samuel 2, Davis 1)."

Over a month ago I wrote that you should post those census records that you claim "prove conclusively" that there was a Jesse Stockton (Jesse 3, Samuel 2, Davis 1).

As you have not posted any census records it appears that you do NOT have any such records, and your claim that these census records exist is NOT true.

Jerry Stockton

Samuel 2 Stockton's wife Prudence

T. J. Stockton was a son of Captain James 4 and Margaret (nee Torbet) Stockton. In his 1898 book T. J. Stockton wrote that his mother's maiden name was Torbet and that her mother's name was Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet. Captain James 4 Stockton was a son of Jesse 3 and Mary (nee Hays) Stockton. T. J. Stockton wrote that his great-grandfather was Colonel Samuel Stockton. The information that T. J. Stockton's great-grandfather was Samuel 2 Stockton is very questionable, however, no one questions T. J. Stockton's information that his mother's maiden name was Torbet and that her mother was Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet.

Life Sketches and Reminiscences of T. J. Stockton, Senior, Second Edition, 1898, p. 116: "My great grandfather Stockton was Colonel Samuel Stockton. He was Colonel in the Revolutionary War. I think he is a native of Old Virginia. I have lost the record and dates on my mother's side. She was a Torbet. Her father was of Irish descent. I have their old Bible; it was printed in 1673, over two hundred and twenty-five years ago . . . My Grandfather Torbet married Hannah Sellers . . . "

In his 1807 will Samuel 2 Stockton of Rutherford County, North Carolina, left his plantation to his "Beloved Wife Prudence Stockton." There is no known marriage record for Samuel and Prudence, and there are no known deed records or court records that show her maiden name. It appears that the first time Prudence Stockton's maiden name can be found is in Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton's 1911 book. Although Dr. Stockton did not even know her first name was Prudence, he wrote that her maiden name was Torbet and that her mother was Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet.

It appears that Dr. Stockton's information is not correct and he simply misread T. J. Stockton's book. Dr. Stockton thought that T. J. Stockton had written that Samuel 2 Stockton's wife was a Torbet and that she was a daughter of Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet. It was T. J. Stockton's father, Captain James 4 Stockton, who married Margaret Torbet, a daughter of Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet.

The Stockton Family of New Jersey and Other Stocktons, by Thomas Coates Stockton, M. D., 1911, p. 238. "Colonel SAMUEL 2 STOCKTON (Davis 1), son of same, is said to have been an officer in the Revolutionary War. He married Miss Torbet, whose father was of Irish descent and whose mother's maiden name was Hannah Sellers . . . The information concerning Col. Samuel Stockton and his descendants which follows is taken from the Life Sketch [sic] and Reminiscences of T. J. Stockton, Senior, . . . 1898 . . . "

Dr. Stockton wrote that his information about Samuel Stockton's family came from T. J. Stockton's 1898 book. Nowhere in T. J. Stockton's 1898 book is there any information about the maiden name of Samuel Stockton's wife. T. J. Stockton wrote that Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet was his grandmother, she was not the mother-in-law of Samuel 2 Stockton.

In their book, Davis Stockton of Virginia, by Leona Irene Smith Johnson and Winfred Broadus Smith, they just repeated Dr. Stockton's information. Not only do they show that Prudence Stockton's maiden name as Torbet, they also show her mother as Hannah (nee Sellers) Torbet. They cite Dr. Stockton as their source for this information.

It appears that Dr. Stockton is the source of the information that the maiden name of Samuel 2 Stockton's wife was Torbet. It also appears that Dr. Stockton came to this conclusion when he misread T. J. Stockton's 1898 book.

Dr. Stockton seems to be the source for another item that appears to be wrong. T. J. Stockton wrote "I have lost the record and dates on my mother's side. She was a Torbet. Her father was of Irish descent. I have their old Bible; it was printed in 1673 . . ." As T. J. Stockton mentioned his mother and her father, and "I have their old Bible" it appears that it was a Torbet family Bible that T. J. Stockton owned.

Dr. Stockton misread T. J. Stockton's information and thought that T. J. Stockton had the Bible of Samuel 2 Stockton. Dr. Stockton wrote "Mr. Stockton has the old family Bible of Col. Samuel Stockton." Johnson and Smith repeated Dr. Stockton's claim that T. J. Stockton had the Bible of Samuel 2 Stockton. It appears, however, that this was a Torbet family Bible and not the Bible of Samuel 2 Stockton. Nowhere in T. J. Stockton's 1898 book does he write that he had Samuel Stockton's Bible.

It appears that Dr. Stockton is the source of a yet another item about Samuel 2 Stockton. Dr. Stockton wrote "The information concerning Col. Samuel Stockton and his descendants which follows is taken from the Life Sketch [sic] and Reminiscences of T. J. Stockton, Senior." Dr. Stockton then wrote that Samuel Stockton had a son Robert. Nowhere in T. J. Stockton's 1898 book does it show that Samuel Stockton had a son Robert.

Johnson and Smith repeated Dr. Stockton's information that Samuel Stockton had a son Robert in their book. They cite Dr. Stockton as the source of this information. There is absolutely no evidence that Samuel Stockton had a son Robert.

It is not known if Dr. Stockton was working from T. J. Stockton's book or someone's notes from this book. As Dr. Stockton did not give anyone credit for supply him with T. J. Stockton's information, it appears that he was probably working from the book itself. From Dr. Stockton's 1911 book, "(The information concerning Col. Samuel Stockton and his descendants which follows is taken from the Life Sketch [sic] and Reminiscences of T. J. Stockton, Senior, written and published by himself, at Stanberry, Missouri, in 1898. The book is not primarily a genealogy and the record it contains is therefore incomplete; but enough has been gleaned from it to make an outline of the family. Mr. Stockton has the old family Bible of Col. Samuel Stockton. His book is very interesting, genial, humorous, and informative. It gives his views on many subjects in an attractive form, as well as anecdotes of his experiences and adventures.)"

Jerry Stockton
Either William Stockton is shown twice in the 1880 census, once in Clinton County, Kentucky, and once in Morgan County, Illinois, or the William Stockton shown in Morgan County is not the son of Samuel C. 6 and Julia (nee Hosey) Stockton.

1880 Illwill, Clinton County, Kentucky, p. 636 A, 189/193, 19 June 1880
Stockton Jessee G., W, M, 40, Farmer, Kentucky, Ky., N.C.
--------- Sarah Z., W, F, 34, Keeping house, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- Samuel C., W, M, 11, Son, At home, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- Mary J., W, F, 10, Daughter, At home, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- Lorettie A., W, F, 9, Daughter, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- Annie A., W, F, 7, Daughter, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- George F, W, M, 5, Son, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- Julia A., W, F, 2, Daughter, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- Osker F, W, M, 11/12, June, Son, Kentucky, Ky., Ky.
--------- William P., W, M, 32, Brother, Farmer, Kentucky, Ky., N.C.

Regardless of who the George and William Stockton living in Morgan County, Illinois, were, the George T.
Re: STOCKTON Cullom 1881-1950

It appears that Cullom Stockton, 1881-1950, was a great-great-grandson of Smith Creek John 4 Stockton of Stockton's Valley. The 1900 census shows that Cullom Stockton was born in 1881 and that he was a son of George T. and Agnes Stockton. This 1900 Johnson County, Texas, census record shows that George T. Stockton was born in Kentucky in 1846.

In the 1850 census, Clinton County, Kentucky, George T. Stockton is shown as a son of Samuel and Julia (nee Hosey) Stockton. George T. Stockton is shown as born in Kentucky and 4 years old, so born about 1846. In the 1920 census, Washita County, Oklahoma, George T. Stockton is shown as born in Kentucky and 73 years old, so born about 1847. The 1850, 1900 and 1920 census are the only census records where George T. Stockton used his middle initial.

Although there is no proof that the George T. Stockton, who was the father of Cullom Stockton, is the same person as the George T. 7 Stockton, who was a son of Samuel C. 6 and Julia (nee Hosey) Stockton, the census records appear to show that he was. Samuel C. 6 Stockton, who is thought to have been born 5 April 1815, was the son of Jesse 5 and Rebecca (nee Smith) Stockton, Sr., and was the grandson of Smith Creek John 4 Stockton.

1850 2nd District, Clinton County, Kentucky, p. 202, 253/253
Samuel Stockton, 34, m, Farmer, Kentucky
Julia " [Stockton], 38, F, N Carolina
Jessee G " [Stockton], 9, m, Kentucky
Loretta " [Stockton], 7, F, " [Kentucky]
John A " [Stockton], 6, m, " [Kentucky]
Mary A " [Stockton], 5, F, " [Kentucky]
George T " [Stockton], 4, m, " [Kentucky]
Wm P " [Stockton], 2, m, " [Kentucky]
Samuel C " [Stockton], 5/12, m, " [Kentucky]

1860 Albany Post Office, Clinton County, Kentucky, p. 43, 297/297
Samuel Stockton, 45, Farmer, [Kentucky]
Julia " [Stockton], 47, F, Housework, N Carolina
Jesse G " [Stockton], 18, M, Domestic, Ky
Loretta J " [Stockton], 17, F, " [Domestic], " [Kentucky]
John " [Stockton], 16, M, " [Domestic], " [Kentucky]
Polly Ann " [Stockton], 15, F, " [Domestic], " [Kentucky]
George " [Stockton], 14, M, " [Kentucky]
Wm " [Stockton], 13, M, " [Kentucky]
Samuel " [Stockton], 11, M, " [Kentucky]
James " [Stockton], 9, M, " [Kentucky]

The abbreviation for ditto, DO, has been replaced with the ditto mark in the 1860 census.

1880 Township 14, Morgan County, Illinois, p. 22 B, 181/189
Stockton George, W, M, 33, Farm Laborer, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky
--------- William, W, M, 31, Farm Laborer, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky

In the 1880 census a George and William Stockton are shown living in Morgan County, Illinois. They appear to be sons of Samuel C. 6 and Julia (nee Hosey) Stockton, but with so little information, this is only a possible connection.

1900 Justice Precinct 6, Johnson County, Texas, p. 292 B, 72/73
Stockton George T, Head, W, M, Dec, 1846, 53, M, 19, Kentuckey, Kentuckey, Ketuckey, Farmer
--------- Agnes, Wife, W, F, Feb, 1858, 42, M, 19, 4/4, Kentuckey, Kentuckey, Kentuckey
--------- Cullom, Son, W, M, Oct, 1881, 18, S, Arkansaw, Kentucky, Kentuckey
--------- Leo, Son, W, M, July, 1886, 13, S, Texas, Kentuckey, Kentuckey
--------- Tessie, Daughter, W, F, Sept, 1889, 10, S, Texas, Kentucky, Kentuckey
--------- Fred, Son, W, M, July, 1892, 7, S, Texas, Kentuckey, Kentuckey

1910 Seger, Washita County, Oklahoma, p. 199 A, 99/100
Stockton George, Head, M, W, 63, M1, 30, Kentuckey, Kentuckey, Kentuckey, Farmer
--------- Agness, Wife, F, W, 52, M1, 4/4, Kentuckey, Kentuckey, Kentuckey
--------- Leo, Son, M, W, 22, S, Texas, Kentuckey, Kentuckey
--------- Fred, Son, M, W, 18, Texas, Kentuckey, Kentuckey
--- next household
Davis Lee, Head, M, W, 22, M1, 3, Mississippi, Not Known, Not Known, Farmer
----- Tessie, Wife, F, W, 20, M1, 3, 1/blank, Texas, Kentuckey, Kentuckey

1920 Seger, Washita County, Oklahoma, p. 55 B, 143/147
Stockton George T, Head, M, W, 73, M, Kentucky, Virginia, N Carolinia, Farmer
--------- Agnes A, Wife, F, W, 62, M, Kentucky, Kentucky, Kentucky
--------- Fred, Son, M, W, 26, S, Texas, Kentucky, Kentucky
--------- Daphene?, Daughter, F, W, 16, S, Texas, Kentucky, Kentucky
--- same page
Davis Lee, Head, M, W, 32, M, Missouri, Mississippi, Mississippi, Farmer
----- Tessie T, Wife, F, W, 30, M, Texas, Kentucky, Kentucky [Tessie (nee Stockton) Davis]
----- Beatric, Daughter, F, W, 8, S, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas
----- Denver, Son, M, W, 7, S, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas
----- Ruth, Daughter, F, W, 4 1/12, S, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas
----- Bruce, Son, M, W, 3, S, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas
----- Carl, Son, M, W, 1, S, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Texas

Daphene / Daphne is probably not a daughter of George T. and Agnes Stockton. In the 1910 census Agnes Stockton is shown as the mother of four children with four children still living. These would be Cullom, Leo, Tessie and Fred.
Hi Susie

My GGGrandmother was Ellen Stockton her parents were Ann Latham and George Stockton and they appear to have come from the Congleton/Wynbunbury area of Cheshire. My Great grandmother said they had no family and therefore we know very little, however my father remembers visiting a "relative" Aunt Polly in Crewe and that was my starting point although I have never managed to trace any family other than Ellen's parents and siblings via census records.

Any information would be gratefully received

Lockhart, South Carolina - in Union Co.

I wrote to the library in Union South Carolina to ask who and how the town of Lockhart was named. The only information I got was it was named after James Lockhart a miller that was there early. I know that David Stockton 1744-179/90 who married Margaret Haden is said to have died in Union County South Carolina. Elizabeth Stockton married Thomas Lockhart in VA. Thought I would get more information than what I got.

Margie
