I hope that was just a glitch about not receiving notification because if it wasn't, I need to do a lot of backtracking ;^)

Anyway, Dolores, have you checked for the surname STAKES? I'm sure you've seen them interchanged as much as I have - even on the same document!

I don't remember if you said in your original post but do you know where in Virginia the Shelton family lived?

Please feel free to email me at flickster@cox.net if you'd prefer... thanks!

Frances

I'd be glad to exchange info with you. We're definitely descended from the same line - your GGG-Grandfather's brother, Charles, was my GG-Grandfather. Their father was William J - not B - and yes, it is Stakes but often the 'a' is listed/mistaken/transcribed as an 'o' so I look for both versions. I have a couple of possibles for William J's father but can't confirm either.

You can reach me at flickster@cox.net if you'd like to talk more about our Stakes.

Frances

I don't know if your William B. STAKES is the same William as William B. STOKES that married Elizabeth SHELTON. Could be. If Elizabeth died in childbirth or some of something else, then it would be possible that he remarried and is, in fact, the same man. Do you know of a definite connection? Thanks for posting here. If we all keep working on this, we should find the answer. Keep in touch.
Dolores Shelton Davis

For some reason I didn't receive a notification about your message. I don't know how that happened.
Anyway, I don't have a list of children of Elizabeth SHELTON and William B. STOKES. I "think" that he was born about 1785. Not sure where. I, too, would like to know their children. I will keep searching. Let me know if you think there is a connection.
Dolores Shelton Davis

Hi,
William married Martha Cone. One of their many children was my great, great, great grandpa Thomas. His picture is posted on findagrave.com. He's burried at St John's Baptist Church in Virginia. Many of the other relatives on this side I believe are burried at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Thomas's son was Ryland. Ryland married Annie Cartwright and had Cynthia. Cynthia married Herbert Davis and had my grandmother Shirley. Shirley married Walter A. Edwards. Please email me if you would like to compare information (sweety340@yahoo.com).

Stokes of London

Same query, more information this time. Sorry to be going over the same stuff:

Is anyone connected to Montmorency Durant Stokes of London (1809-8 Aug 1861)? Montmorency married Maryanne Brandon on 8 Feb. 1845. They had Arthur, Montmorency Brandon, Lydia, Adelaide, Katherine, Charles William, Herbert and Maryanne. They were both killed an a house fire and the children were orphaned and eventually made their way to Australia, New Zealand, America and a few stayed in England. I have made a few contacts with the Brandon family and one Stokes relative in Australia and a very helpful gentleman in England, but have never gotten back further than Montmorency's father John Stokes (of whom I know absolutely nothing about). Any help or connection would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Mary Polly Stokes

Hello,
The Thomas Stokes who died in 1820 in Chester Co. SC is probably the father of the one who married Frances Humphries. Thomas Stokes, Jr. is, I believe, in the Chester Co. Census of 1830. Several of us who have been researching the family think that he and wife Frances (if she were still alive that late) and most of their children moved to the area of Fayette Co. Ga. just after the census was taken. We think Thomas and Frances may have died not long after, because there are no records of them in the area, but several of their children married in Fayette county during the 1830s. Are you descended from Polly? Would be interested in talking about this family. Thanks.

Charlene

Dolores,

Do you know if your William and Elizabeth had any children? I'm looking for the parents of my 3rd great-grandfather, William J. Stakes/Stokes who was born somewhere in NC about 1818. I'm fairly sure that his father was William but can't document that fact.

At some point, William J. moved to Norfolk County, VA (possibly his grandparent's home?) where he married Martha Ann Cone. They had 7 children - Sarah Ann Stakes, Mary E. Stakes, William J. Stakes, Emily J. Stakes, Thomas Benjamin Stakes, Frances Diana Stakes and Charles Henry Stakes. Sarah was born in Norfolk County but the other children were born in Princess Anne County.

Any help will be greatly appreciated... thanks!

Frances

Can you provide any more info? For example, when and where he was born? Where he lived? Where and when he died? Name of wife? Names of siblings? Associated families?

The more info that you can provide, the more likely others can help.

Good Luck,
Jay T Stokes
