Hi Mark

I just ran across this thread.

Alexander Stoughton and Catherine Prentiss/Prentice are in my family as well. My great great grandparents were Mary Ann Stoughton and Alexander Mackey, who married abt 1858 In Renfrew, Ontario.

Take note there are at least two different Mary Ann Stoughtons and quite a few Alexanders Stoughtons in various branches of the tree so it gets quite confusing....

How are you related into the mix?

J

From the three Stoughton brothers who came to Canada, I have William James Stoughton marrying Agnes Watt on 2 Nov 1838. They had 8 children; one of which was called Nathan Dayton Stoughton who married Mary Ann Ryan. They had 8 children; one of which was called Robert Stoughton born 2 Jan 1881. I have nothing else about this Robert Stoughton.

I hope this may help you.

Jeanette Bullock
Manitoba

From the information that I have, I think the chances are very high that your Alex Stoughton/Catherine Prentice couple is the same pair that I have. So, Alex and Catherine would be the common connection between our families. The line that I have been researching is descended through Alex and Catherine's (eldest) daughter Elizabeth, who married Prosper Lavallee in Renfrew County. Prosper and Elizabeth are buried in Orillia, Ontario.

Mark

June,

I am interested in your Stoughton infomation. I wish to find out if your Alexander Stoughton connects to the one I have been researching. The info I have is seems to fit generally. Alex Stoughton, born in the USA, possibly NY State shows up in the area of Renfrew Co., about 1830. I believe he married a Catherine Prentiss(ice). and had 7 or 8 children, the first of which was Elizabeth.
If this information seems a close fit with yours, would you mind contacting me?
Thanks,
Mark Douglas

Possible we're missing a generation. There was a William next door in Chazy on one of the census I found and a number of others in the town--Francis, John. I'd appreciate seeing your research on B.F. and Sally Atwater and knowing how you descend. Mine could have had a first marriage I don't know about, but I'd think children would show up. Anna Turnbull Randall was from lower Canada and born there. Her 2 sons with Randall were born in VT. My email is mabryrj@comcast.net. I know that B.F. Jr. was killed in Civil War from his mother's pension record. No wife or children. Linda Mabry

But my Benjamin Franklin Stoughton was born in 1798....perhaps there is a line missing between GUSTAVUS and Benjamin.....? Would your line have any children benjaminfranklin?

Hi. It seems we have the same father: Gustavus Stoughton, born in Connecticut and married to Mary Stone. According to my research, his son Benjamin Franklin married a Sally Atwater. His son John Christopher Stoughton moved to Iowa and married Lucy Merrihew. Lucy also comes from the New York, Vermont area. It would be interesting if we can connect our Benjamin F.´s. ?? thankyou, martha

He married Anna Turnbull (m. 1st Randall and had 2 sons.) Anna and B.F.S. had 2 sons. B. F. Jr. died in Civil war unmarried. Richard Milo Stoughton is 2nd son and my ancestor. I'd love to connect for sure to Gustavus. No proof. My B.F. b. in VT.

Stoughton Manuscript BL 6174

Rose Stoughton( Otis) had a younger brother Nicholas, undistinguished when she left him age about 6. He unexpectedly inherited the Stoughton estate at age 14, became very well educated at Oxford and became a Baronet. His memoir & family history, 825 pages, written in the 1670's, was eventually donated to the British Library. Very interesting, as he was a contempory of Samuel Pepys, although he lived a very different life.
I have just finished the transcription of the last 319 pages of this document with a copious index,(at least 48 pages) & the BL has allowed reproduction. This part deals especially with Sir Nst's own life & that of his family.
The very first 194 pages are still a work in progress, dealing with details, deeds marriage jointures, sales of land, etc.
The middle section, giving the geneology, increases in detail as he moves forward in time. This part was partially transcribed in longhand by a Rev. H. J. Bukitt, of the Stoughton Church,(St. John the Evangelist) between 1918-1939). A Canadian Commander David G. MacDougall in England typed a version of this incomplete Burkitt transcription in August 1998. Both these documents lie in the keeping of the Surrey Archaeological Society in the Guildford Museum in Surrey.
Using an archival microfilm of the original from the BL, this new transcription is as close to the original in format as I can make it, using the original spellings. It prints best on legal size pages, so the pagination is correct. This makes it quite heavy.
When I revisit England in the fall or early winter, I shall deliver a copy to the Surrey Archaeological Society & the Surrey History Centre in Woking.
In the meantime, if anyone is interested or has suggestion for further publication, please contact me.
It has taken about a year & a half of dedicated work so I shall not waive copyright freely.

Dillucena Stoughton organized a land development in Michigan - which started as the Stoughton-Bullock township, later became Franklin, Oakland, MI - from Niagara, NY. He recruited people from NY, Mass., and the Slayton/Raynale/Worthington/Morton families, who were all related, for the new community.

Where did Dillucena come from? Was he born in NY, or Mass? Can't find information on him, and would really like to know about his background.

Julie

There is a website called "American Silversmiths" that has lots of genealogy information from the 1600 & 1700s, and there are several Stoughton names listed there. The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~silversmiths/names2...

Trying to locate any information on the family of Nancy Stoughton who married Cephas Augustus Buttles. Nancy was born 23 Feb 1794 in East Windsor, Hartford, CT and died in Milwaukee, WI. Any information concerning her parents and/or siblings would be greatly appreciated. I have found multiple listings for Stoughtons in the CT censuses...but unfortunately, the early censuses do not list children by names. Can anyone help??? Thank you.
Kathy

Bill, it is unnecessary to put your e-mail address in a post. You can find anyone's address by clicking on their name in a post next to Author: or by: This takes you to another page where the address is encripted to protect it from search robots that collect names for spamming purposes. Hope this helps.

I have confirmed however his wife, Mary Cox Stoughton. She died in Cincinnati 1892 and is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery. I suspect Cornelius was buried at Ebenezer, but of course that no longer exists but I have been working hard to "uncover" those very early Cinti pioneers who were buried there.

Look forward to hearing back from you soon!
Looking for the needle in the haystack. I am researching for a friend. Her grandfather and his brother came into north Louisiana in 1900 from Arkansas. They were born in Missouri. Ed (Edd) Durmon was born in 1873 and Jack was born in 1878. They were said to have two sisters but we have no names or ages. One was said to have married an Adams and the other married a Stoten (spelling ?). Does anyone have information on this family?

Amaziah was born in Litchfield, Connecticut and Mary Ann was born in Rutland, Vermont. Both are buried in Franklin MI.

We have exchanged info before as I'm also related tothe same Dake line as you. Mine though Mary Dake. I was also the person who asked on another board about a Jousha Stoughton marrying a Capen that you replied to recently.
