Stout (Staudt) family (PA, OH)

A distant cousin of mine researched Stout family history several years ago and I have a book he put together with lots of information. The earliest ancestor I know of is Hans Staudt (1535 - 1590) who was born in Rossburg, Palatinate - Germany. The first in America was Johann Michael Staudt who immigrated in 1733 and settled at Staudt's Ferry in Berne Township, Berks County, PA. George Stout moved to Clearcreek Township, Fairfield Co., OH.,in 1808 and his son, Benjamin Franklin Stout, laid out the town of Stoutsville, OH in 1848. I would be happy to share more information with anyone.

John Stout 1829

I am at a loss. I have been looking for any information on a John Stout b: July 1829. The earliest that I can find anything about him was a marriage license to Mary Hannah Powell in 1853 Martin County Indiana. Family lore has it that "they" were orphaned and sent to live with family or friends and were very horribly treated. They ran away, crossing a frozen river. I do not have any idea who the "they" are. He must have had siblings but don't know how many. Does this story sound familiar to anyone?

Desmond Sherman Stout ~ Marguerite Elizabeth Elder

I am looking for information on my great-great grandparents. I know that Desmond and Marguerite lived in San Bernardino, Ca. Desmond died abt 1933, I have a birth date possibly Sep 2, 1876. This came from his WW Registration records. Desmond worked for Southern Pacific railroad out of Sacramento as a "Brakeman". It is said he died in an accident. Voter and residence information end for him in 1932, then only has Mrs. Marguerite E Stout. Marguerite died Dec 1968 in Oregon. They had four children together Harold "Hal" W Stout, Desmond Wallace Stout, Kenneth Irwin Stout, and Ardeth Stout. They are all deceased.

I need help with birth records and ancestry from Desmond and Marguerite. Some possible alias' for Desmond are "Desmoine Shirley and Sherely Desmond". Family has also stated that the we are of Germanic decent and may have changed the spelling of our last name.

Any information would be appreciated.

Looking for my Family History WV

Hello Everyone,

I was born Sandra Sue Stout in Braxton County, West Virgina on 9/14/1944, in or around Wheeling or Gassoway. I understand that the name Stout is English-Irish.

I was adopted at age two (2). My birth mother's name is Rena Stout and my sister's name is Dottie Stout. I saw 2 pictures of Rena Stout. One was of her in a baton twirler's costume - she looked about high school age, and the other was a picture of her holding me as a child under 2 years old. She had dark hair and was very pretty.

The parents that adopted me were Gaylord (Mac)Hugh McElwaine and Decima (Dee) Francis Gladieux-McElwaine. They moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where my mother's family lived.

My adoptive parents revealed to me that I was adopted when I was in elementary school, around the 4th-7th grade, so I was about 8-11 years old. They showed me a hospital certificate that said there was a birth certificate on file in Braxton County, WV.

The story I got was that my birth mother, Rena Stout, had to go into the hospital for an extended length of time, and the mother that adopted me was my babysittr and would only agree to care for me if she could adopt me, because my birth mother had left me for lengths of time before and my adoptive mother got attached to me and it hurt her to give me back to my birth mother.

The adoption was highly suspect as it was processed through the night court. My sister Dottie was living with our Grandfather when I last wrote to her around this age. I lost track of her when my mother became ill and was in the hospital for a year. Then I went to live with my adoptive grandmother, Nora Katherine Gladieux.

I have no information on my birth father.

Any information would be most appreciated, primarily for health reasons at this stage of the game. Also, it would be interesting to find out who my relatives are!

Virginia STOUTs

Looking for anyone researching the following STOUTs:

Elijah STOUT m. Elizabeth TURNHAM on 08 Feb 1798
Jacob STOUT m. Mildred BALLENGER on 27 Oct 1796
James STOUT m. Abigail HOLLOWAY on 30 May 1799
Peter STOUT m. Mary SHERWOOD on 19 Jul 1798
Rueben STOUT m. Mary VAN DYKE on 01 Aug 1784
Lydia STOUT m. Joseph GRAY on 24 Nov 1796
Anne STOUT m. Peter VAN DYKE on 10 Dec 1791

These are Culpeper County, Virginia marriages. I descend from Jacob STOUT and Mildred BALLENGER of Stevensburg, Culpeper County, VA; (Jacob is the son of Abel STOUT b1740-d1797 of Hunterdon, NJ; Abel moved to VA and died in Augusta County).
Jacob's daughter Frances "Eliza" Elizabeth STOUT married Samuel W. ALLEN of Albemarle & Cumberland Counties (VA) in 1820. The other STOUTs are likely related in some way.

I also have some photos I took of the STOUT headstones at the Stevensburg Baptist Church. They are:

STOUT, William C. 1838-1924 and his wife Hannah O. 1838-1915 (one headstone).

James E. STOUT, June 7, 1841- Jan 30, 1924

STOUT, George Wood 1874-1963
STOUT, William Carey 1880-1954 (these two on one headstone).

I will be happy to send a file of these headstone photos to anyone researching this line.

If anyone knows where the earlier STOUTs of Culpeper are buried, I'd appreciate hearing from them.
We received the first 25 marker DNA results today. The only one with 24 of the 25 marker match to our Harry Joseph O'Neil, was Richard Stout. The marker not matching was one number off. The Stout in the DNA study had an invalid email address. If anyone knows anything about the Stout DNA project, I would appreciate a reply. They have not finished our 37 marker yet.--M. P.

Has anyone any information about a marriage of this Daniel Stout, son of Aaron and Catherine of New Jersey? From the 1880 thru 1930 census it appears that he was married to the same Martha E. Since the Stout Bible record has Martha E. Stout his wife born Augest 1854, the 1900 census has this Martha E. born Aug 1855, the 1900 and 1910 census has her the mother of three children, Homer born Dec 1877, 1900 census has married 23 years, the 1910 census has married 31 years; thus she was married 1876 or early 1877. Since the 1910 census has Daniel married twice his first marriage likely occurred after the 1870 census and his first wife died before his 1876/7 marriage to Martha E.
Attn descendants of John Stout & Mabel Sexton

I was originally working on this for a "family reunion" event, but thought that it might be an even better idea to make it generally available. A few years ago, I came into possession of a cache of letters dating from 1811 to about 1860. Many of them are related to my 3rd-g-grandparents, Lewis Gordon and Keziah Stout, who emigrated from western New Jersey to Mason Co., KY in the late 1790s. Keziah was one of several children of John Stout & Mabel Sexton who all seem to have left New Jersey at about the same time for New York and Kentucky.

The letters in the document linked below are from Charity Stout and her granddaughter in New York to Keziah and her son in Kentucky, dating from 1811 to 1841. There is some interesting genealogical information here related especially to Charity's descendants with surnames Parke, Drake, and Pullen. It's also an interesting look into the lives of our ancestors in those times.

The document can be downloaded from http://history.wdgordon.com/StoutLetters.pdf. I'd enjoy hearing any comments that you have, and anyone who is directly related to these people can contact me for a possible exchange of more information.

-- Doug Gordon

Minneapolis Kansas Stouts

The only information I have is rather thin. I am trying to locate any information available on Alberta Levonne Stout. She is listed on a birth certificate as being from Minneapolis Kansas. It lists her year of birth as 1933, we know she lived in Portland Oregon in 1958-1959. Any information would be appreciated. I can be contacted at kwardell@comcast.net

Sisters Eleanor (Stout) Mount and Mary (Stout) Mount

I am tying to identify the parents and siblings of Mary and
Eleanor Stout. Here is a brief summary of what I know:

Mary was born 21 Nov 1795 in Kentucky. She married Samuel
Mount on 28 Apr 1814 in Lexington Ky. They moved to
St. Louis, Missouri by 1817. Mary died in St. Louis on
13 Jul 1861 and is buried in Des Peres Presbyterian
Cemetery in what is now the city of Frontenac, Mo,
a suburb of St. Louis.

Eleanor 'Ellen' Stout (my 4G-Grandmother) was born around
1800 in Kentucky. She married Brittin Mount, presumably in
Kentucky but possibly in St. Louis, Mo. I know they
purchased land in St. Louis as husband and wife in 1820.

Samuel and Brittin Mount were brothers and both born in New Jersey in 1788 and (abt) 1791 respectively.

Mary and Samuel had no children of their own, but had many
children living with them during their lives. Some of these
children had the surname of Busby, I believe these were
nieces and nephews of another Stout sister, but I am not
certain of that. Brittin Mount died in 1832 and Ellen and
the 3 living children (2 were Brittin and Ellen's,
the other was Brittin's by a previous marriage) lived with
or near Samuel and Mary until they both died.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Terry Mount

Some STOUT info from early 1800s in IL

Here is some misc information I have from the IL State Achives on various STOUT names during the early 1800s in IL.
1.Index of St. Clair Co. Commissioners Proceedings, 1821-1829. STOUT, Jacob pp 119,173,180; STOUT, William p 33
2. St. Clair Co. 1st Regiment, IL State Militia. (A listing of those with rank of Lt. and above. The dates are when they were elected to that rank.) STOUT, Jacob, Lt., 30 Oct 1824, Capt., 9 Apr 1827, Maj., 24 Aug 1827; STOUT, William, Qtr Master, 23 Oct 1827, Maj., 15 Dec 1832.
3. Book B - Letters of Guardianship, 1836-1849, St. Clair Co. Deceased - STOUT, Jacob. 2 May 1836. Minors - Elizabeth, Clarissa, Made(air?), Nancy, Susan, Jacob. Guardian - EYMAN, Abraham.
4. William Morrison Business Records from 1804-1855, Bryan & Morrison Store Records, Cahokia. STOUT, George and Henry, 1803, p 75; STOUT, Daniel, 1810 p 11; STOUT, George Jr., 1807 p 13; STOUT, George and Henry his son, 1807 Led. C p 120; STOUT, John Jr., 1808 p 27; STOUT, John, 1807 Led. C p 172.
This info helps me verify that the father of George STOUT, Jr. (my g-g-grandfather) was indeed George STOUT, SR., and not Joseph STOUT as stated in Herald Stout's book.

I'm researching descendants of Jacob Stout (1791-1847) & wife Catherine (1791-1858) who lived in Pickaway Co., OH. One of their children was Benjamin. I've found records saying Benjamin married a Julia Inda, and then a Sarah Stansbury. Other records show only one wife, Judy Bower. Does anyone have info on this Benjamin Stout and his wife and children?

I am a descendant of the Stout Family from Middletown, NJ on both sides of my family. I am having alot of trouble tracing Captain John Stout's line who returned to New York City. I am looking for brothers and sisters Helen Stout, daughter of John Benjamin Stout (m. Effie Van Varick) son of Benjamin Stout (m. Phebe DeForest) son of Captain John Stout. Would love to hear from my distant cousins. According to the NYGB Record some of this line moved to Kentucky and someone and was going to publish their genealogy. This information was written in 1940 but never found its way back to the NYGB Society. Hope there is someone out there who can help me!

About 2 years ago someone posted a message about Caroline Stout, daughter of William and Catherine Gruver Stout, who married a Lesher. If that person is still out there...I am a descendant of Jacob Stout, who emigrated to Pickaway County, Ohio.but need help proving the family in PA. I am pretty certain that Jacob and William were brothers. Have never seen anyone else looking for this branch! I think we descend from Johann Michael's second son, Jacob.

James Woodrow Leeson - WV / MD

I am looking for any information regarding my grandfather James Woodrow "Dutch" Leeson. He was born Sept 6, 1914 in Saxmon, WV. He died in Baltimore, MD on Feb 10, 1975.

The information that is my main concern is the location of his burial. He does not have a headstone which we are looking to purchase for his grave. I am looking for an obituary, funeral home name or cemetery name. The information I have been given is the following:

-The funeral home or cemetery may have began with an "O..."
-died in a Baltimore Hospital (a hospital that was relocated to another street after 1975)
-The cemetery may be off Ritchie Hwy, in Maryland.
-The funeral home was on the corner of Light Street and ?(Washington or Chestnut?)

ANY information would be greatly appreciated, my father is looking to place a headstone on the grave and he cannot remember the exact cemetery after all these years. My aunt [Charlotte (Leeson) Dugger, also of Baltimore, MD] that made the arrangements has since died and I cannot seem to locate any information for him.

Thank you,
Marsha (Leeson) DeMarco
Theophilus and Elizabeth STOUT in Hopewell, NJ record

In the records of the Baptist Church in Hopewell, NJ, I find the following entry:

Apr 6, 1804
Elizabeth Stout, wife of Theophilus dismissed to Genesee

The earliest Theophilus Stout that I am aware of was born about 1789 in Hunterdon Co., NJ and thus would only have been 15 years old in 1804, so I'm sure this not him. Does anyone know who this Theophilus and Elizabeth Stout might be?

Bill Stout
stout.genealogy@cox.net
Specifically a Timothy STOUT who married a 'Mary' Together they had a daughter called Elizabeth in 1823. Elizabeth went onto marry a Frederick BENTLEY. Frederick was from lambeth. They lived in North Shields once married. Dredeick and Ezizabeth had 4 children, Amelia (B abt. 1849) Robert ( b abt. 1852) Mary (b abt. 1855) and Ann 'Chisholm' (b. abt. 1847).

Well cousins, now we done it. I was looking up some info on cd # 6 tree # 4043, and there it was. It seems that in that 99 page tree, Abraham Lincoln, President, appeared. I guess if we go back far enough, we're all relatives. If you have a name you want to know about , it's probably in this tree. twhite7@swbell.net
