Hello I have been reading the Stratford message board and thought that you would like to hear my story. In the late 1970s Len Stratford got in touch with my Uncle with our family tree. I think that he must be the brother of the Gerald who is mentioned in the message boards. I have looked after the family tree information sent to us by Len all these years and am now trying to check and verify it. I would very much like to get back in touch with him. Can anyone help me?

HI Mea, I have had a look on my tree can't find Sarah. I have had quite a bit of help from other Stratfords who inform me that all the Stratfords from these areas were related. I have also noticed that your surname is Messenger. I have some Messengers on my tree. I have John Stratford B 1804 in Stokenchurch married to Elizabeth Parker of Stokenchurch. She must have died because he then married Ann Messenger B1826 in Stokenchurch. Let me know if any of the information is useful to you.
Best Wishes
Mary

Hello again Peter,
Gerald sent me two photos of the manor but I was not aware of an 18th century addition. It is a beautiful place!
Once when looking through "The Times" newpaper online, trying to find information on Farmcote Manor, I actually found it listed for sale I believe in the early 1920's. There was a photo of it. I was out of printer ink and sadly was not able to print the picture. Then when I went back later to find the same picture, I could not find it again! I hate when that happens! I remember the ad mentioning the Stratford family and how their coat of arms was on the building.
I am Ontario but my ancestors set sail from England in 1906 and landed in Quebec where they settled.
I have never met Gerald in person but from his e-mails he has quite a sense of humour!
Kim
Kim,

You are very welcome. We have been here for 15 years and still getting unpacked. We have seen Gerald from time to time - he certainly is a character!

Our goal is to try to work out what the house looked like before large parts of it fell into disrepair. According to Gerald this happened in 1734. We asked Gerald if he had come across any images but sadly he has not. I was hoping that some of the tithe maps might at least have an outline of its "footprint". We are going to spend some time in the Gloucester records office which apart from the many deeds and other documents has a good selection of historical books on the area.

As you are probably aware the current house has a 19th century addition. We think this was added in 1844 but again we do not have definitive evidence of this.

Are you in west or eastern Canada?

Regards,

Peter Udale

We are doing some research on our house and would welcome any information that you may have put together.

I have meet Gerald several times, although he was quite unwell last time we saw him. He has given me several volumes on information about the Stratfords, much of which you may already have. If you are passing by you are welcome to call in.

Hello Peter,
Nice to hear from you. Gerald had said you were the present owner of the Manor. Wonderful, and with so much history behind it!
I have not spoken to Gerald in a few years but most of my information comes from him except for my branch of the Stratford tree, which we both collaborated on as he did not even know of it's existence, that was in October of 2003.
I am in Canada, Gerald has said I am the only Canadian connection to the Stratfords as far as he knows.
I don't know when you purchased the Manor but I did come across a newspaper article in "The Times" regarding Great Farmcote Manor being for sale in 1974 and it was listed for 72,500 pounds and it was for sale with Bernard Thorpe and Partners of Winchcombe. It stated that Thomas Cromwell was reputed to have stayed there.
Kim
Hello Paul,
Nice to hear from another descendant! I also descend from Walter Overbury Stratford and also from his son George. This George had John Eccleston Stratford who is a brother to Thomas. Is your Thomas called Thomas Overbury Stratford? Was he apprenticed to Matthew Boulton of Soho, Birmingham? I see his son William, and then William has George who married Sarah Dungworth, is this your tree?
Have you been in contact with Gerald Stratford who is the Heraldic Head of the Stratford family in England? Most of my information comes from him. All of his information has gone to the College of Arms in London.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Kim

I suspect it depends exactly what coat of arms you mean as I believe it was altered at times when a Stratford married an heiress of another family.. I believe Richard de Stratford was living in 1484 when the Arms of Stratford were exhibited in London at the College of Arms.
I have ancestry, some from a book and therefore unconfirmed, some confirmed by graves, family portraits etc as follows. Can you expand, confirm, correct any of it?
Working backwards through parents I think I have
Mary Stratford (-1735) mar William Collins
Robert Stratford (-1679) of Wythall Walford, Herefordshire, barrister mar Martha Stacey
John Stratford (-1658) of Wythall Walford, Herefordshire, barrister mar Blanche Rous
Ferdinando Stratford of Wythall Walford, Herefordshire, mar Ursula Hereford
William Stratford (-1570) of Wythall Walford, Herefordshire mar Ann Walwyn
John de Stratford of Farmcote and Guiting, (-1553) mar Margaret Howell
Richard de Stratford, alive 1484, of Farmcote and Hawling Glos, mar Frances Kirkeby
Robert de Stratford mar Attwood
John de Stratford mart Catherine Eyton
John de Stratford mar Elizabeth Stenmarsh
Henry de Stratford mar Margaret Loudham
John de Stratford mar Maud Ceely
Stephen de Stratford of Guiting Glos, mar Elizabeth Monhault
Archbishop John de Stratford (-23.8.1348) -connected with Farmcote Glos
Robert de Stratford (-1315) mar Isabella Haddon
William de Stratford (-1305) mar widow of Baron St Clare
Sir Edward de Stratford (-1289) mar Maud de Valencia
Sir Engehardt de Stratford (-1246) mar Marjorie de Romene
Sir William de Lupella mar Editha de Stratford
Sir Lodovic de Lupella (alive 1135-1160) mar Loderne Moliner
Sir John Fitzwilliam de Lupella (-1135) mar Ava de Coherfield
Sir William de Lupella (-1108) mar Aubri de la Greene
Sir Henry de Lupella (-1170) mar Maud de Ollerton
Sir Gualla de Lupella (?from Normandy) mar Allotta de Ewe
Ann: ammataylor@yahoo.co.uk
[The following refers to the same Stratfords as in the earlier messages from VGLEPPING1 or gin--just a few more details, some of them recently discovered]

Robert STRATFORD (my grandfather Hugh ELLIOTT's half brother) emigrated to Beatrice,
Nebraska, from County Cavan, Ireland, with wife Jane BERTRAM and children Robert Henry, Mary Ann,
Thomas Frederick; also a child Joseph who died shortly after arriving in the United
States.

Robert Henry married Edna MILLER. They had children Robert Vinton and Richard
Gilmore.

Mary Ann married Seth W. JOHNSON. The 1920 census gives her children's names as Harry L., Carla M. and
the unlikely Gelmire L. An obituary for Seth gives the youngest child's name as Velmer.

Thomas Frederick (known as Fred) married Lucy REEDY. They had children Thelma,
Coral, and Kathleen. A California death record indicates that Thelma had the married name
McWHORTER.

Hi there. I am also descended from the Stratfords of Gloucestershire - I have also got information on them dating back to the 1300s and our Arch Bishop of Canterbury. However, my info is only from secondary data - I would be interested to know if you have viewed any of the info first hand? A lot of the info is contradictory and I'm desparately trying to clarify it! I would of course be happy to share with you the info I have - much of which is on the Sheffield branch of the family.

Hello there - I've just spotted your message about the Stratfords. I am descended from the Stratfords of Farmcote - via Walter Overbury Stratford, his son George, his son Thomas, his son William and his son George - who brought the family to Sheffield. Just let me know if you'd like me to share the info I have on them - I do have quite a lot, although if you've got them back to the 1300s you've probably got as much, if not more, than me. I've got them back to John Stratford who was Arch Bishop of Canterbury - although only via secondary sources. Not had time to visit Gloucestershire Archives yet!

Judy,
Txs so much for your swift response. If I understand your message correctly, you are not related to the Beatrice, NE Stratfords (Robt & Jane) is that correct? Do you know the names, details of the Co Cavan Stratfords that you mentioned? No Watsons/Elliotts/Gillespies in your tree, correct? My Elliott/Watson relatives were all members of the Church of Ireland then Episcopal in US...so I imagine the same would go for Stratford "kin" perhaps. Ginny

Hi
I am one of the products of the Potsgrove Stratfolds...
A Martha Stratfold married a Charles Broughall at Woburn Bedfordshire in 1828 and I decend from their long and complex line.
Marthas father was John Collett Stratfold 1751 Potsgrove he married a Martha Gamby.. Presently I am trying to find out all I can about this group.. The middle name Collett appears to have been passed down through the years, But it seems to start with Johns generation. His father was Robert Stratfold 1711 who I believe was born at Bierton Bucks... As well as John Collett Stratfold, he also had sons Richard Collet 1753 and William Collett 1758..
As far as I can tell Robert 1711 married an Elizabeth Smith... But if anyone can shed light on this Collett link I'd love to know more..
Infact any help from anyone regarding the Stratfolds and their links would be greatly appreciated.. Mine seem to have strayed off to Potsgrove and linking them with others in the area is a little difficult.
Kind regards
Tina
