Irene Peters Strausbaugh, age 99,
passed away at Forestview Skilled Nursing, on Saturday, April 11, 2009. She was born May 31, 1909 in York, Pa., a daughter of the late Arthur P. and Virginia March Peters."
She graduated from William Penn High School in York, Pa., she then graduated in 1929 from Shippensburg Normal School, and received her baccalaureate degree from Millersville State College in 1961.
Irene began her career as an elementary school teacher in a one room school house in York County, Pa. After thirty-five years of teaching in the York area, she retired and moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. in 1964, where she taught for another ten years. She was a member of Faith United Church of Christ, York, Pa. and was committed to her faith. She enjoyed gaming and going to the races.
In addition to her parents,
she was preceded in death by her husband William Thomas Strausbaugh,
and a sister Clara Peters Kessler.
She is survived by a son M. Roy Strausbaugh, and his wife Rosanna of Erie;
a sister I. Catharine Peters McChesney of Vista View, Calif.; a brother Arthur H. Peters of York, Pa.;
a niece Sandra McChesney Young of Oceanside, Calif.; and three nephews: Donald Kessler and his wife Marilee, Arthur W. Peters, all of York, Pa.; and Gary Peters and his companion Esther Kos of Dubois, Pa.
Friends may attend funeral services at the Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York, PA 17404, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ron Oelrich officiating. Burial in Mt. Rose Cemetery, York, Pa. Memorials may be made to the Erie City Mission, 904 W. Erie Plaza, Erie, PA 16505.
