William Carroll Strickler was also my great-great grandfather (via Florence's son, Max Meadows).

I believe Florence's mother was Melissa C. Echols. William and Melissa married in 1866. I didn't know the other information you mentioned - I'm glad to learn anything.

Do you know anything about William Carrol Strickler's parents?

William Carroll Strickler was a member of a Confederate army unit which arrived at Ft. Washita, near Durant, Oklahoma, with a herd of pack mules only to discover that the Civil War has ended while they were enroute. He started back home to Arkansas, but stopped at the Wheelock Indian Mission near Idabel, Oklahoma, long enough to meet and marry the orphan neice of the preacher who operated the mission school and church. (unknown name) Before acquiring his own farm in Bryan County, Oklahoma, he was foreman for a ranching operation of a wealthy Choctaw Indian farmer and rancher, Wilson N. Jones. William Carroll Strickler had eight children, one or whom was my grandmother, Florence Strickler Meadows. He died in Bryan County, Oklahoma, and was probably buried at Caddo, Oklahoma, where three of his daughters lived. William Carroll Strickler was my great-grandfather

William H. and Anna E. Strickler are listed in the 1910 U.S. Census residing in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA. Their children are Elva M.,age 23 born in Ohio, Jennie M., 16, John W., 15, Elsie D., 13, and Fannie G., 5. All except Elva were born in PA. The census indicates that William and Anna had been married 20 years, possibly suggesting the Elva was adopted by William upon marrying Anna. It also states that Anna had given birth to 7 children with 5 living. It is not clear to me who Williams parents were but his residence in Duphin Co. suggests that he is may have descended from Abraham Strickler, b. 1732, son of Heinrich (not Abraham as suggested by the Stricklers of Pennsylvania) possibly through the lines of Ulrich, born 1807. Perhaps Frank Duff can make the connection.

I don't think I will be of much help. The book covers mostly Virginia Stricklers The Pennsylvania portion only contains a few pages. The only mention of a William H. Strickler in those pages say his name is William Henry and his fatehr was Isaac. I have had a lot of problems finding information on my PA Stricklers. The member of ancestry that has been most helpful and extremely knowledgable on the Strickler family is a member by the name of Ricstrick. Thanks to him I have been able to trace my roots quite far. Maybe he will be able to help you also.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Joyce

Mary, I was going back over some Lucy (Strickler) Whitaker messages. I'm wondering if the mix-up over Lucy having a child, Edie, by a Baker before she married James Whitaker might be this: Lucy and James had a daughter, Emma Eddith, (called Edie) who married John Baker. Emma Eddith was a brother to your grandfather, Fred Lester Whitaker. I have a picture of Edie, her husband, and children along with her brother Fred Lester and his wife.
Anyone know of a Strickler "curse"???

I'm working on a book on the concept of generational curses. Anyone know of a "curse" through the Strickler line? We've had a lot of adversity in our family- more than most, so just throwing it out there. I'm not talking medical conditions passed genetically, but more of the Twilight Zone (cue music) type of stuff.

Thanks!!!

Hi Jennifer!

Gosh, it has been awhile since we spoke. I just read my old emails and they confused even me!

Emory & Willa had a daughter Margaret, his father Emory & wife Margaret E. Jarvis Morris had a daughter Clara, but I think I was talking about David and Nancy Smith Strickler having a unknown daughter. It was them that had the 10 sons you are speaking about - right ? I only have 9 sons listed. And not much on 8 of those boys. it would be wonderful to verify with someone what little info I have.

So, if you did send me anything it is buried deep in my other machine. I've been using a lap top now for about 9 months and have not had access to anything in the old one for about that long (its not the one with the little memory that i spoke of in one of the old emails). Anything you would be willing to share with me now would be really wonderful.

I have forgotten - who is your line again?

Thanks for thinking about me - jeanne - stook11@verizon.net

I'm not sure if I responded before about your question about Emory and Willa's daughter. I do have them having 10 sons and one daughter who died in infancy. I don't have specific dates on her and the information I have comes from the book Stricklers of Pennsylvania. I do have information on some of the other boys in family.

I have a David Strickler born on 11/1/1802 to Peter Strickler and Nancy Groom. I also have his nine other siblings and some information on them. Unfortunately, it appears that I don't have anything to concretely connect this David with the one you asked about. I can trace this David back to Jacob Strickler b. 1699. If you are interested in what I have on him and his family, let me know and I will email it.

Ray,
With all due respect, if you look closely at the tree of thread, you will see that I did reply directly to you. If it appears to look like I responded to her it was because she posted her response to you a few minutes before I did. Your "hijacking" comment is completely off target and unfair, as I have always been more than willing to help you with your search for information on your Martha Strickler connections. It is clear that my attempt to save Ms. Crane and you time and effort, in regards to Forerunners, was not appeciated. In the future, I will refrain from replying to your posts unless they are directed to me personally. Good luck with your family search and feel free to call on me anytime you desire any assistance.

Hi Joyce,

Welcome to Strickler family genealogy. I, too, have a well thumbed copy of Forerunners. It is a remarkable book. If you have not done so already, you should get in touch with Frank Duff. He is, in my opinion, the foremost expert on the Strickler family in America and especially the Virginia family lines. He has thoroughtly deconstructed the Forerunners book and has a huge database on the family. He occasionally posts on this site but I would be happy to send you his contact information.
Ric Strickler

Ray, there is no information in Forerunners on Martha G. Strickler that has not previously been widely distributed. She was married to Richard Deavers and they had four children )Forerunners, p.271). Her mother was Amanda J. Fleming. Her immigrant ancestor was the pioneer, Abraham. Her ancestry has been thoroughly research, unfortunately there has been no information previously available on her descendants, but I personally have not researched that branch of the family and there may be some new information that has surfaced.

Charles Strickler, 1827 to approx. 1875, Allegheny PA

This g-g-grandfather of mine is pretty obscure. I would be grateful if anyone can come up with some parents for him. He was 43 in the 1870 Allegheny town census, where the last name looks more like Wrickler. But his wife Sarah, nee Paynton, and daughter Mary are known as Strickler in later censuses and family documents, so I'm pretty sure of the Strickler connection.

Charles died before 1880, and his widow and children relocated to Brooklyn by 1900, where Sarah was from originally. On a marriage certificate in 1898 Mary's father is given as "George" Strickler, but there are many other inaccuracies on this document. Nevertheless, there is an outside chance that the man I'm seeking was George not Charles. If anyone has any clues about his ancestry or relatives, I'd be grateful!

I have in my posession a Genealogy Book written by Harry M Strickler copyright 1925. The book (1700-1924) include's information on many Strickler families mainly from the Shenandoah Valley but also from Pennsylvania area. Some of the Strickler names are; Conrad, Abraham d.1746, Jacob, Joseph b.1731-1795, Adam b. Mar 5 1812- d. Mar 12, 1894, Benjamin 1799-1856, John, Isaac, Daniel. I am just starting to look through the book myself but if anyone would like me to try and see if their Strickler ancestors are included in this book I will try and forward any information from the book to you. It may take sometime to get back to you so please be patient.

Thank you for the information. I am very interested in getting in touch with Mr. Duff. I have been trying to correct some mistakes in our Strickler family tree. From the information I have gathered, our line stayed in Pennsylvania and slowly branched west from there. So if you think that Mr. Duff may be able to help me please let me know how to get in touch with him.

Thank you again,

Joyce
