Adam (Adave) Striker

My Great-Grandfather was Adam Striker of Cape Elizabeth and South Portland Maine. His wife's name was Ruth Gorman. His military records show that he was born in Christman, Illinois, his father born in Germany and his mother born in Holland. When he re-enlisted four years later, records indicate that he claimed to have been born in Indiana and that both his mother and father were born there, too. He had a son (my grandfather) Perry A. Striker of Portland, Maine. Perry's wife was Coraice Scott Striker. I am the daughter of Perry & Coraice's son, John G. Striker (b. 1932, d. 2002, Portland, Maine) and Mary Dyer Striker (b. 1927). John also had three siblings, Anita (of Portland and Westbrook, Maine), Ronald (of Vermont), and Joyce (of Portland and Westbbrook, Maine). Would be happy to have any information pertaining to this family - specifically looking for Adam (Adave)Striker's parents.

James Striker

The book The Stryker Family in America by William N. Stryker, 1979, has information on ancestry and descendants of Jacobus/James Stryker/Striker. This book also contains the story about James Striker's aid to his loyalist nephews. James migrated to Canada as his brother Samuel had done. He died in 1835 and was buried in the Picton Parish Graveyard, Prince Edward Co. Ontario. One of his sons named Daniel moved from NY to Michigan about 1835. Daniel is my 4th great grandfather. Would be happy to share further information and would love to find out more!

James Striker

The following information is from the "Stryker Family in America", 1979,by William Norman Stryker:

James/Jacobus Striker/Stryker was the son of John Stryker and Sarah Crooker, grandson of Jacobus Stryker and Martha Griggs, great grandson of Gerrit Strycker and Wyntie Cornelise Boomgaert, and great great grandson of Jacobus Gerritsen Strijcker and Ytie Huybrechts. Jacobus Strijcker and his family came from Ruinen in Holland to New Amsterdam in 1651.

The wife of James/Jacobus (b. 1752) is not named in this source. In addition to John and Garret, his children are named as James, m. Freelove Peters, his will dated Beekman NY March 24, 1824; Samuel, d. Washington NY, his estate inventory dated March 7, 1836; Daniel, m. Judith Sophia Way, d. 1848 Jackson Co. Michigan; two daughters, first names unknown, one m. Henry Harris and lived in Canada.

Apparently the estate record for Samuel names his nieces and nephews, but I have not yet checked it. Also according to this source, the family papers of John Striker are in the Picton Canada Library.

Also per this source, James/Jacobus had a brother Sampson, m. Ursula Clapp. They were loyalists and moved to Canada in 1786. They also used the name "Striker".

I believe the book is available on film through the LDS Family History centers. You may be able to find it in a major genealogy library in Canada. I found it at the Allen Co. Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana, US, which is supposed to be second only to Salt Lake City, Utah for genealogy sources. I haven't yet found one to purchase, but would sure like to get my own copy.

Striker, James

James Striker, Dutchess County, New York came to Canada around the late 1700's at the time of the Loyalist movement.
His 2 nephews who were Loyalists stayed at his place. James believed political feelings should not prejudice family affections - the continental authorities felt different. James was court martialled for harboring spies and abetting them to escape to another country. A high ranking revolutionary officer intervened on his behalf but the authorities confiscated all his property. Without wealth and ill at ease of those who misjudged him, James immigrated to Greenbush Town, Prince Edward County, Ontario Canada.
(info from Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, Mika Publishing Company, Belleville Ontario 1976)
Wife of James Striker ?
We were in Picton in May and would be very disappointed to hear there is a Striker history in their museum. The Picton Library has 2 volumes (of a 4 volume series) of the Stryker ( Striker) family written by William Norman Striker called The Stryker Family in America. They are a great source of info contain good history on the Strikers in Canada. We have the first 2 volumes will check for info on your William D. We have found his grave in Woodville cemetary near Rogue River, Oregon. His headstone shows only years 1851 to 1923. Can anyone can direct us to a path that will give us exact dates. I am also interested in finding more info on who we believe to be his father Elisha Striker or Stryker.
