Jefferson Stringer and Polly of Ashe Co., NC

Before Jefferson Stringer married Catherine Johnson he was married to a lady named "Polly". Records show that in 1859 in Ashe Co divorce court Jefferson filed for divorce from wife "Polly" (no last name) and in 1852 the case was dismissed by the court at the expense of the petitioner. Why was it dismissed?? In 1852 Jefferson was living with his future wife Catherine Johnson. The didn't marry ubtil 1852. Jefferson was the son of John and Susannah Baker Stringe of Ashe Co., NC.. He and his second wife Catherine Johnson lived in Grayson Co., VA where he died Dec 1891. Does anyone have a clue as to Polly's maiden name or any other information about their marriage.

Where was Gaither born? Some Stringer left the Eastern shore of Virginia and lived in Nanesmond County, which is no more. Some are buried around Churchland, Va. They go back before the Civil War, so may be kin. I will keep an eye out for that name in my research. We have a relative who fought, George William Stringer. C.S.Stringer

Re: Gaither STRINGER, b. 1844

Steve
Gaither Stringer was born May 6, 1844 in Ashe Co., NC to Nancy and an Unknown male Stringer. We have never been able to trace who his Father was. He possibly was the son of John and Susannah Stringer of Ashe Co. His Father also possibly died between May 1844 and the 1850 Grayson Co., VA census where Nancy is listed with Elisha Hart and three Hart children plus Gaither (Whose name was spelled Gate, Age 7). Nancy Stringer Hart died in 1852 at the birth of a daughter Nancy Jane Hart. Elisha Hart remarried to Nancy Davis who died in 1902, Elisha died in 1856. Gaither sometime after 1850 went to GA possibly because his older brother Matthew was there. He enlisted in the army at age 16 with the help of Matthew and later married Elizabeth Catherine Gregory in 1866 in GA. Elisha Hart is buried in the White Top Baptist cemetery and has a large stone. Gaither came back to Virginia in later years and offered a gold piece to anyone who could tell him where his Mother was buried. I have never been able to find where that would be. If you should ever find who Gaither's Father was there are a lot of people researching that and who would love to know. Dell Hart from White Top wrote to me that his g/grandfather was Andrew Hart the son of Nancy and Elisha and that Nancy had two Stringer sons Matthew and Gaither when she married Elisha. This is the same Andrew Hart that said his Mother Nancy died in 1852 in the ECA. Del also said that the Nancy in the 1850 census with Elisha was his ancestor Nancy Stringer Hart and the Nancy in the 1860 census with Elisha was Nancy Davis Hart. Gaither's daughter Mary Stringer wrote in a letter that her Father had a half brother Andrew Hart. Mary said her Father's name was Gater (a spelling used then) and he had no middle name. She also said that Matthew died in the Civil War.
You may reply to me at jackandpeggy@gmail.com

Steve there was a mix up about Elisha Hart's wifes. A Del Hart descended from Elisha and his second wfe corrected me on this.
Elisha first married a Nancy Stringer b. abt. 1823 d. 1852 who was the Mother of Gaither and Matthew Stringer. Elisha and Nancy had four children the youngest Nancy Jane was born 1852 so Nancy possibly died at her birth. Elisha later married Nancy Davis b. abt. 1832-35 who died in 1902. They also had four Hart children. Elisha died in 1865 and is buried in the White Top Baptist Church in White Top, VA. This explains the mystery of the two Nancy Hart's. I too thought he only had the one wife named Nancy and passed on some bad information until I was corrected on this by Del Hart. Nancy Stringer Hart and Nancy Davis Hart are two seperate people and both were the wife's of Elisha Hart.

The Stringers in America were from the Eastern shore of Virginia, and the first one we have records of was a Col. John Stringer, who lkived in Northampton and Accomack counties. I don't know where he imigrated from, but it was back in the late 1700s. He later repreasented his county in the House of Burgess, after the Reverlution , in Williamsburg, va. Could have come from Ireland, don't know. C.S.Stringer

Wow. I think we may be related, cousins.
My grandmother never spoke of any other siblings. I got the report from Middlemore Homes and it said that Mary and Ethel were Alice's two youngest children. That's how I knew she had siblings. Both children were lice ridden and Mary had scarring in her ears from diptheria and couldn't hear very well. What I found by going through the PRO was that there were other children Lily, Elsie and Rose.
It was all very hush hush back then and of course we never asked any questions. Mary and Ethel were separated when they came to Canada and never saw each other again until they were in their 50's or 60's. Ethel was not very receptive, as she was adopted and brought up in a very nice home. My grandmother went through the school of hard knocks. When they were initially sent to Canada, Ethel was 7 and Mary 10. Ethel was sent to St. John New Brunswick and Mary to Halifax Nova Scotia. Neither Ethel or Mary ever saw their mother again.
On Mary's birth certificate, it says she was born in the Poor House and I believe her mother's name was listed as Charlotte Alice Stringer.
Do you have any relatives that can remember any details? I would love to hear from you again and will give you my email address: julie.staples@sympatico.ca
Thanks so much for contacting me.

Julie

Hi Gill.

This may be of some help for sure.
I really don't know a lot about my great grandmother but from what I've been able to find so far is that her name was Alice and she had a daughter Rose. Her other two daughters, Mary (my grandmother) and her sister Ethel May were sent to Canada as part of the Middlemore Homes, Home Children. It was my grandmother, Mary who was born in 1901 in Birmingham. I believe Alice's mother, my great great grandmother's name was Sarah Adams. If you think there is a connection please reply.
Thanks for any and all information.

Julie

Hi

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately I don't think it is the David Stringer I am looking for. He would have been about 66 in 1971. And as far as I know had no daughter Susan. His wife was name Mary Ann, but she also would have been about 66. And he was born Burton-on-Trent.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Jean

We are decended from the Virginia Stringers, originally from the Eastern shore of Va. Northumberland and Accomack Counties, back in the 1600s. They later moved accross the bay to Nanesmond County, which no longer exisits. They lived on the Elizabeth river. The first known Stringer in the Colonies was Col. John Stringer of the British army. Maybe this will help in your search. CSS

One of our relatives was George Stringer, who had a sister named Alice. Their mother died when he was 3 and he went tolive with his aunt and uncle and cousins John, Essie, and Bo (George Clive) in Nansemond county, Va. on a farm on the Elizabeth river. His mother died in childbirth, so their father , george Alexander took the girls to live somewhere else. They never rally knew each other, and don't know where they lived, the girls, sisters.
Hi, found this old message on the board at Ancestry.com. I'm related to James Stringer and Margaret Barnhart, through their children who moved to Manitoulin Island in Ontario. I'm trying to find James' predecessors, and am looking at the possibility of a Francis Stringer in Tassagh. If you have anything on Jame's parents, I'd be appreciative. Would be glad to share what little I have on them from the time they moved to Canada.
Thanks!

Hi.I am researching Ann (or Annie) Maria Stringer b.1834 (?) in Barnsley, Yorkshire. She married George Buckle b.1836 in Dodworth,Yorkshire. I have found 4 children - Elizabeth b1859, William b.1861, Francis b.1863 and Lily Ann b.1873.
I think her father may have been George as well and he may have come from Silkstone, but I cannot confirm this. If anyone can help fill in any gaps I would be very grateful.
