I know a lot of people have been researching Strouds that went out from New York and settled in the Midwest, particularly Wisconsin and Iowa, with some stopping along the way in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. I have a theory on the origins of one group of these Strouds and would like to propose pooling of information to try to prove or disprove this theory. They appear to have been of German origin, probably from the Palatinate.
The following christening records are on file at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City:
From the Reformed Church, Linlithgo, Columbia, New York (reel 534201):
Thomes Stroudt, son of Thomes Stroudt and Margaretha Omphry, christened 06 May, 1775 (sponsors George McKlean (or possibly McKilean) and Hannah McKlean (or McKilean)
Hannah Stroude, daughter of Thomas Stroude and Hannah Omphrius, born 25 March, 1782, sponsors Andrew Combs and Hannah Combs
From the Reformed Church, Germantown, Columbia, New York (reel 933969):
James Berns Strout, son of Thomas Strout and Hanna Omphrey, christened 27 Sept., 1784, sponsors Hermannus Berns and wife Anntjen Schneider
From Lutheran Saint Pauls Church, Minden Twp. Montgomery, New York (reel 534218):
John Humphrey Strout, born 21 May 1794, christened 08 June 1794, son of Thomas and Hanna Strout, sponsors Thomas Groell and wife Margretha
I believe there was at least one other son, Peter, born about 1792, whose birth record I haven’t found. The records at Minden Twp. didn’t begin until 1793. There is also a Jasper who was living near this family in 1800 who could have been an older son. There may have been several other daughters, besides the Hannah christened in 1782.
The 1790 census for Montgomery Co. NY show Thomas Stroud at Canajoharie, one male 16 and up, 2 males under 16 and 4 females. Other listing for New York were Richard Straut and Jacob Strout in Orange County and John Stroud in Columbia County.
The 1800 census for Onondaga Co, town of Fabius, shows Thomas Stroud, age 45 & over, with two males under 10 (I believe these were Peter and John Humphrey), one male 10 – 16 (probably James Berns), one female 16 – 26 and one female 45 & over). Another entry for a Thomas Stroud shows one male 26 – 45 (misses the Thomes christened in Linlithgo by one year, but probably still him) with two males under 10 and one female 26 – 45. There is also a Jasper Stroud, age 26 – 46 with one male 10 – 16 and one female 26 – 45.
The elder Thomas Stroud is missing from the 1810 census for Onondaga County NY. Instead, there is Thomas Stroud, age 26 – 46 with four males under 10, three males 10 – 16 and one female 26 – 45. Nancy Stroud, age 26 – 45, with one male and two females under 10, Peter Stroud showing two males 16 – 26 (I believe the second is probably John Humphrey) and one female 45 & over (probably their mother).
In the 1820 census, only Thomas and John H have remained in Onondaga County NY. Thomas is 45 and over with three males under 10, 2 males 10 – 16, one male 16 – 18, three males 16 – 26, two females under ten and one female 26 – 45. John H is age 26 – 45 with one male under ten, one female 26 – 45 and one female 45 and over. Jas B Strawd was in Pike Twp, Allegany Co. NY age 26 - 45 with two males 10 – 16, two females under 10, one female 10 – 16 and one female 16 – 26. Peter Stroud was in Oneida County NY, age 26 – 45, with two males and one female under 10 and one female 16 – 26. Other Strouds in Oneida County were Joseph Stroud, age 26 – 45, with three males and two females under 10 and one female 26 – 45, two persons foreigners, not naturalized (information from a son’s Civil War pension file gave Joseph’s and his wife’s birthplace as Canada) and John Stroud, age 45 and over with one female 45 and over.
I believe the Thomes Stroudt christened in 1775 is the same one who appears in the 1850 census for Rock Co. Wisconsin, age 75, with wife Catherine. Several of this sons were also in Wisconsin and many of his descendents later moved to Iowa. James Berns Strout, christened in 1784, is the most likely candidate to be the father of Leonard Stroud of Trumbull Co. OH as well as the group of Strouds who were in Louisa Co. Iowa by 1856. Peter Stroud settled in Michigan. I just discovered John Humphrey Stroud and haven’t tracked him much further than the 1820 census.
There is a marriage record for Thos Stroud (place of birth blank) and Marget Mackquiller (place of birth Ireland) 13 June 1771 at the First Reformed Dutch Church, Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York (Family History Library reel 1002622). I have no clue if this is the same Thomas and Margaret from the first christening record above.
