Classification: Query
Surnames: Stumbaugh, Stumbo, Thornsbury, Sizemore
Doesnt look like there's alot of "action" on this message board, but I'll hope for the best. I need someone who is also researching the family of Frederick Stumbaugh/Stumbo and wife, Nancy Thornsbury/Thornesberry to bounce some things off of.
In viewing other sites, records, and fellow researchers I have seen repeated listings of Frederick's wife Nancy having died around 1853.
I assume some believe this death date because of Nancy being in the household of Frederick Stumbaugh/Stumbo in the 1850 census, but not being listed as in the household of Frederick and known children of theirs in the 1860 Floyd Co. census. However, I have seen an Elizabeth Stumbo recorded as being the next property to fredericks...and believe her to be the widow of Frederick & Nancy's son, William. (referred to as Big Bill Stumbo by some researchers)
In Elizabeth's house (and I've seen her age listed as both 58 (which means this couldnt be the widow of William) and also 38 (more plausable). Are female children, "Vina" (short for Melvina, as cross referenced in later census records) and "Jam" or Jane, and William (this should be "Bill Buck" Stumbo". There is also a female adult, Nancy Stumbo age 58 or 60. Since the residences were in such close proximity I took this to actually be Nancy Thornsbury-Stumbaugh, wife to Frederick, but for some reason not in Fredericks house.
The situation remains sticky because in the 1870 Floyd Co. precint 9 census: Elizabeth Stumbaugh is listed with children Melvina, Jane, and William in the home of a Lewis Sizemore and his wife, Catharine. (This looks like it could be her parents, but have never seen another reference to a Lewis Sizemore actually being Elizabeth's father)
QUESTION #1 Who is this Lewis and Catharine Sizemore?
Frederick Stumbaugh shows up with a Joseph Stumbaugh 22 years old, and a Mary A. Stumbaugh, age 6.
QUESTION #2 Is the "Joseph" Joel Stumbo? a known child of Frederick & Nancy Thornsbury-Stumbo? Who is the Mary A. Stumbaugh? a child of Joseph/Joel? or as presented elsewhere, a possible child of Frederick's born to him and a woman named ANZA HALL?
A Joel Martin's household shows his wife as being Judith (Maybe same "Judah" Stumbo, known child of Frederick & Nancy) their children and a Nancy Stumbaugh age 60-70. born VA.
QUESTION #3 Did Judah/Judith Stumbaugh marry a Martin man? or a Hall man? if so...this could still be Nancy Thornsbury-Stumbaugh living now with her daughter and family.
QUESTION #4 If ANY of these recorded Nancy Stumbaugh's are actually Frederick's wife, Nancy Thornsbury-Stumbaugh/Stumbo....Did they divorce? Split up? Does Anyone out there know if for sure Frederick Stumbaugh did in fact remarry or even father a child by this mentioned Anza Hall?
QUESTION #6 Does anyone know when for sure Nancy Thornsbury-Stumbaugh died? Does anyone know where her or Frederick are buried??
Nancy disappears after the 1870 census...Frederick shows up in 1880 in the household of his eldest son John Stumbaugh/Stumbo. (again with another female child...this one named "polly" not a daughter to John!)
QUESTION #7 going back now to Elizabeth Sizemore-Stumbaugh, widow of William "big bill" Stumbaugh/Stumbo. Does anyone know where this couple are buried?
I have seen documents suggesting that William "big bill" died before his son, William "Bill Buck" was born...this puts William "Big Bill" as having died between 1858/1860 as William "Bill Buck" is recorded as being 1 year old in 1860 census. I have seen biographical info that suggests that Frederick Stumbaugh had son's who served in the civil war...including "Big Bill"...but this cant be accurate as to my knowledge the civil war didnt start hopping till around 1861-1862.
QUESTION #8 Does anyone know who the sons who reportedly served in civil war were? I have only found Samuel.
William "Bill Buck" Stumbaugh/Stumbo married a Mary Allen. He served as Sheriff of Floyd Co. (his picture is in the courthouse along with one of his son's who also was a Sheriff) he was a "public" servant, yet I cannot find any biographical references to him in Floyd Co. Historical works, nor can I find where he and wife Mary Allen-Stumbaugh/Stumbo are buried.
QUESTION #9 Does anyone out there know where the above couple are buried? Does anyone have tidbits of information on him in the biographical sense?
I know this is long, and if you've read it all....I appreciate anyone's help in sorting some of this out!!!
Thanks so much. PS, Yes I have been all over Ky genweb, rootsweb, LDS, Ky vital stats, Floyd Co. Cemeteries, etc, etc
