Yes They use to. I know the carriage(hearse) is there that my grandfather Richard Sturge (sr) made. Also, they use to have a register there with faily memebrs listed biths, deaths etc. Don't know if it is still available or not. Sturges live close to the museum. When you enter the main Road from the museum keep right, Between that and the supermaket is what we use to call "Sturge's room". Not like it use to be and most all the old sturge's are gone, but their sons & daughters live there.

Does anyone know if the museum in Wesleyville has any local family history resources available? I'll be there in August [and staying with some Sturges :)]

Aunt Bessie was living in Wesleville when she died. As a matter of fact, one of her sons Herbert (married to a Mottie Carter) and one of her daughters Inez ( married William Andrews) is still living there as well.Herbert as a daughter..Sheila (R.N.) (one of 4) who is married to a Dr. Bill McKelvie. They are serving with world visions in Pakiston

I'm looking for infomation about Claiche Sturge who came on a boat from I don,'t know that's part of my problem.
Also on the same boart nameAlien Passenger for the United States I think. in June2 1925.

Thank you for your information. What I got is very little.
I have a manifest of Alian passenger fpr tje United.
It sailed on June 2th 1925.
Their was a Claire Hunt and a Claiche Sturge on that boat she arrived at St John's NFL and sellered in Cornerbrook.
Claire Hunt in Greenspond same year.

If you could help with these two names it would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah you're right, Heather got it mixed up and had me confused! Jememia Winsor was married to Richard Sturge. They are my Great-Great-Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandfather. I do know of Aunt Neta as I recall Dad speaking of her from time to time in the past when talking about family. Not sure if I've actually ever met her though.

I was in Wesleyville myself for two days back in August of 2006. Myself and Peggy's girls (Julia & Tess) brought Grandfather out for a visit from Mount Pearl. Sadly it would be his last.

Saw your posting about grandfather & grandmother Sturge. Heather had the part wrong, about Jemmia Winsor marrying Ben Sturge, She married Richard Sturge (Sr). Heather is the grand-daughter of Uncle Jim(Dad's brother)who moved to Boston yrs. ago. In fact Heather is suppose to be coming to Nfld. this month. I've been in touch with her now for the past year. Of course, grandfather was born on flower's Island,and many of their children as well. There is only one daughter left..Aunt Neta. take car, Hi to everyone!

Oh and in addition to this, Samuel KEAN (6th Generation to previously mentioned William KEEN) was born Abt. 1772 in Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, and died Abt. 1822 by drowning.

Samuel Kean would have been 22 years of age in 1794 when John Sturge was born on Flowers Island, Bonivista Bay. With Flowers Island being as small as it is ... it would be impossible for Samuel Kean not to have known John Sturge!!!

When Samuel Kean died in 1822, John Sturge would have been 28 years of age and married with two children.

The specific connection I am trying to find is one between the Sturge's of Newfoundland, and the Sturge's in England.

The farthest we can go back in Newfoundland for the surname Sturge (that I know of) is John Sturge:

John Sturge b: 1794 Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland d: Unknown Baptism (CE) 1: Mar 25, 1817 Baptism (CE) 2: Sep 30, 1830.

So it appears John was born in Newfoundland, and was first baptized by clergy from the Church of England in 1817 which would of made him age 23 at the time. This was a period when clergy would only have visited the area (Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay) by boat.

By the time John had been born, Newfoundland had already been colonized for 184 years (John Guy, Cupids, 1610). So in 1794, Newfoundland was already well known in Europe for its fishing grounds.

Bristol being a big center of trade, merchants there would have bought and sold fish that had been caught in Newfoundland, which probably started after 1570 before colonization, years after John Cabot's voyage of 1497.

It is likely that John's father would have been one of these fishermen, therefore it is assumed that he might have been from the Bristol area, but we can not be certain. Again Bristol was a center of trade, not of fishing. There were Sturge's in the Bristol area then, are still are today:

There is no question the linage goes back to England, we just know nothing about John's father to know what Sturge line there he came from.

If we switch to my Grandmother's side though (Kean's of Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland), I know that I'm 12 generation to William KEEN b: Abt 1633 in Teignmouth, City of Exeter, England.

The spelling of the surname switch to KEAN 4 generations down from William KEEN.

My Great Great Grandmother was a Jemimah Winsor:

Jemimah Winsor b: 1873 Swain's Island, BB, NF d: 1951 m: Dec 25, 1890 Relationship: Married

She was married to Richard Sturge:

Richard Sturge b 1: 1862 Flowers Island, BB, NF b 2: Abt. 1874 Flowers Island, BB, NF d: 1930

Maybe this is not the same Jemimah Winsor you speak of.

Joseph Sturge VI (1793 - 1859)

Later this month, at 11 a.m. on Saturday 24th March 2007, at Five Ways in Birmingham UK, the statue of Joseph Sturge will be re-dedicated following extensive cleaning and repair. A new explanatory board will also be located near to the statue. After that ceremony a plaque will be placed at the site of his former home. Hannah married my great grandfather, Albert Burry of Newell's
Island, Bonavista Bay. In the Burry family tree posted on this site, her birthdate is 1846. I have the Sturge family tree for the
Bonavista Bay area, and it doesn't show a Hannah Sturge born on that date. I have also checked the Newfoundland
Archives. The only birthdate I can find is for a Hannah Sturge
born to Jacob & Mary of Flowers Island in abt.1857. Could
someone tell me if this is the Hannah I'm searching for.

My brother and I have some unusual info on our Sturge roots. Our Grampy was Jim Sturge whos brother was Chris. If you were generally dis-agreeable, you were labled "contrary as Uncle Chris"
I think Gramps dad was Ben Sturge.. Married Jermima
Windsor.
Grampy Jim married Mary-Ann Wilcox or Molly as she was later known. Our dad was Roland Sturge Jr. and
his brother is our Uncle Calvin.
Our lineage goes back mostly to Scotland. Our name
has a few different pronounciations but means The
Battle Spear. Our family creed reads "To be rather than to seem"

I am the gt.gt.grandson of James&Ann HARDING ne STURGE
Ann STURGE born 1836 i believe is the daughter of Charles& Mary Ann STURGE nee CHURCH from Frampton Cotterill.Ann married my 2xgt grandfather (James)in 1859 at St George(Bristol).
James & Ann left Oldland (Bristol) between 1866&1868,and finaly settled in Reddish Stockport (Ches),where they ended their days,and were laid to rest at Willow Grove cemetery.
Ann in 1913,and James in 1918.
Is there a connection with my Ann STURGE,and the STURGE family of Gaunts Earthcote?

I think we have different family lines. I will confirm with my parents, but I think our decendants go back to Germany??

Mark ... you are a direct decendant of the John Sturge I'm referring to in Newfoundland? 1794? What is your connection to him though his parents? Where did they migrate to? Newfoundland or Australia in the 1740's? If they ended up in Australia, why did their son, John Sturge, end up in Newfoundland?

I have absolutely no information beyond him. There are ideas, but nothing concrete. People have been looking for this information for ... years.

I am looking for information on John Sturge, my ggg-grandfather. The information my grandmother gave me says that he was from NY state. His wife's name was Sarah Hall(father's name was Tom HALL) also from NY. John's son's name was Arthur STUYVESANT STURGE. John was on the board of supervisors in Beaverton, MI around 1909.
Any help in finding John's paarents or Sarah HALL's family would be appreciated.
