Yes They use to. I know the carriage(hearse) is there that my grandfather Richard Sturge (sr) made. Also, they use to have a register there with faily memebrs listed biths, deaths etc. Don't know if it is still available or not. Sturges live close to the museum. When you enter the main Road from the museum keep right, Between that and the supermaket is what we use to call "Sturge's room". Not like it use to be and most all the old sturge's are gone, but their sons & daughters live there.

Hey Gloria,

Yeah you're right, Heather got it mixed up and had me confused! Jememia Winsor was married to Richard Sturge. They are my Great-Great-Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandfather. I do know of Aunt Neta as I recall Dad speaking of her from time to time in the past when talking about family. Not sure if I've actually ever met her though.

I was in Wesleyville myself for two days back in August of 2006. Myself and Peggy's girls (Julia & Tess) brought Grandfather out for a visit from Mount Pearl. Sadly it would be his last.

Oh and in addition to this, Samuel KEAN (6th Generation to previously mentioned William KEEN) was born Abt. 1772 in Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, and died Abt. 1822 by drowning.

Samuel Kean would have been 22 years of age in 1794 when John Sturge was born on Flowers Island, Bonivista Bay. With Flowers Island being as small as it is ... it would be impossible for Samuel Kean not to have known John Sturge!!!

When Samuel Kean died in 1822, John Sturge would have been 28 years of age and married with two children.

R.
Re: Sturge Family of Newfoundland

The specific connection I am trying to find is one between the Sturge's of Newfoundland, and the Sturge's in England.

The farthest we can go back in Newfoundland for the surname Sturge (that I know of) is John Sturge:

John Sturge b: 1794 Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland d: Unknown Baptism (CE) 1: Mar 25, 1817 Baptism (CE) 2: Sep 30, 1830.

So it appears John was born in Newfoundland, and was first baptized by clergy from the Church of England in 1817 which would of made him age 23 at the time. This was a period when clergy would only have visited the area (Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay) by boat.

By the time John had been born, Newfoundland had already been colonized for 184 years (John Guy, Cupids, 1610). So in 1794, Newfoundland was already well known in Europe for its fishing grounds.

Bristol being a big center of trade, merchants there would have bought and sold fish that had been caught in Newfoundland, which probably started after 1570 before colonization, years after John Cabot's voyage of 1497.

It is likely that John's father would have been one of these fishermen, therefore it is assumed that he might have been from the Bristol area, but we can not be certain. Again Bristol was a center of trade, not of fishing. There were Sturge's in the Bristol area then, are still are today:

http://www.sturgefamily.com

There is no question the linage goes back to England, we just know nothing about John's father to know what Sturge line there he came from.

If we switch to my Grandmother's side though (Kean's of Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland), I know that I'm 12 generation to William KEEN b: Abt 1633 in Teignmouth, City of Exeter, England.

The spelling of the surname switch to KEAN 4 generations down from William KEEN.

Regards,

R. Mark Sturge
rmsturge@rogers.com

Hannah married my great grandfather, Albert Burry of Newell's
Island, Bonavista Bay. In the Burry family tree posted on this site, her birthdate is 1846. I have the Sturge family tree for the
Bonavista Bay area, and it doesn't show a Hannah Sturge born on that date. I have also checked the Newfoundland
Archives. The only birthdate I can find is for a Hannah Sturge
born to Jacob & Mary of Flowers Island in abt.1857. Could
someone tell me if this is the Hannah I'm searching for.

My brother and I have some unusual info on our Sturge roots. Our Grampy was Jim Sturge whos brother was Chris. If you were generally dis-agreeable, you were labled "contrary as Uncle Chris"
I think Gramps dad was Ben Sturge.. Married Jermima
Windsor.
Grampy Jim married Mary-Ann Wilcox or Molly as she was later known. Our dad was Roland Sturge Jr. and
his brother is our Uncle Calvin.
Our lineage goes back mostly to Scotland. Our name
has a few different pronounciations but means The
Battle Spear. Our family creed reads "To be rather than to seem"
Hope this helps and wish I were closer.
Heather Sturge

Mark ... you are a direct decendant of the John Sturge I'm referring to in Newfoundland? 1794? What is your connection to him though his parents? Where did they migrate to? Newfoundland or Australia in the 1740's? If they ended up in Australia, why did their son, John Sturge, end up in Newfoundland?

I have absolutely no information beyond him. There are ideas, but nothing concrete. People have been looking for this information for ... years.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Mark Sturge
Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Am considering the genetic angle now, having discussed this with a cousin. It requires a suitable student doing a thesis at your end (University of St.Johns?) and one over here, where I can identify any number of sample providers. There is, possibly, the alternative of trying to inter a television company to fund it as a history programme, if people were willing to participate.

Shall have to find the energy to take it forward but, at present, it competes with a busy job and lifestyle.

Hey Tammy,

Wow, you know I just might be able to find you some information. My Father, Max Sturge b: 1947 Wesleyville, BB, NF is clergy in the Salvation Army, and it is my church home. My Great Great Grandfather Richard Sturge b: 1862 Flowers Island, BB, NF was the first person to attend the Salvation Army to my knowledge. He would have been Church Of England previous to that.

I'm a bit confused though. Your Grandmother Elvie was a Sturge and are you saying Elvie's father was William Sturge who is your Great Grandfather and his wife was a Norris? I guess Margaret was a Sturge too right? Did you have any Sturge Uncles?

Which side of the family are you looking for information, or are you looking for both sides?

R Mark Sturge
rmsturge@rogers.com

There are several communities in the area where the Sturge's lived.
I'm a direct seventh generation decendant of John Sturge b: 1794 Flowers Island, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland.

Would be most interested to find that England connection, as I've always understood that the Sturge's who settled in Newfoundland were from the Bristol area as well.

Peter, thanks for your post and your website. I've always wondered if any Sturge's in the UK were aware of any ancestors who may have left to cross the ocean. Maybe we'll never know. To find the missing pieces seems to be an impossible task!

I do have to say it would be interesting to see what genetic genealogy would uncover ... any thoughts?

Regards,

R.
I'm kind of a new kid on the block concerning the Sturge name. This is the first time I have looked at this message board. In answer to your statement, Mark, " I've always wondered if any Sturge's in the UK were aware of any ancestors who may have left to cross the ocean. Maybe we'll never know. To find the missing pieces seems to be an impossible task! "

In a genealogy compilation I have which was printed in 1878 I find a Joseph Marshall Sturge, born 13 VI. 1838; mar. at Montserrat, W.I., 3 IV. 1866, Ann, dau. of Francis Burke of that place; issue----Charles, born at Halifax, Nova Scotia, 28 III. 1867; Mary Gertrude, born at Gloucester 1 V. 1871; Ada Eliza." This Charles, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia would be a grandson of Charles Sturge who was the younger brother of Joseph Sturge, which I believe is Peter Sturge's line.

There is no further information as this was a little over 10 years before this book was printed. It appears that Peter Marshall Sturge returned to Gloucester where Mary Gertrude was born, but this shows that at least one Sturge was born this side of the ocean. Sarah in Kentucky

We have firm evidence back to Sarah Sturge whose son Christopher was born out of wedlock and was bapt 1699 bur 1771 at Frampton Cotterill. The father was Samuel Holder, she being his mistress. She later married ? England and died in 1725 (Will Glos 1725/266)
Who was her father? There was a Nehemia Sturge who m Joanne Roberts and they had a "filia" born at the right time at Frampron Cotterell.
He was of the same generation as Joseph ll (d 1710/11)

Sturge Family of Newfoundland

I regret not replying earlier to your message. The Newfoundland Sturge family are quite well researched and I think you could find them by either typing 'sturge' as a general inquiry or trying one of the other genealogical sites.

My own family has no recorded link to those in Newfoundland but, interestingly, the early settlers of that area are said to have come from the Bristol / Somerset area of England - the same area as my family. I cannot recall where I saw the research on that group but am aware that a good many of them have extensive recorded trees, possibly modern.

Hope you have had some success.

Peter M.
