You can email me at larrydsturgeon@hotmail.com and I'll send you a copy of my Sturgeon Ancestry file. The 1930 Census shows a Lyle M. Sturgeon in Beaver, Dallas, Iowa with Pearl, Edith, Paul, Leo and Dorothy Sturgeon. Not sure if it's the same Lyle.

I would appreciate any information anybody has on my family. I am a sturgeon from Greene County IL. My great great great grandpa was Jasper Sturgeon and he married Mary Ellen Knapp. He had 3 children that I know of for sure. Albert, Cecil and my great great grandma Belle. I have searched back to Jasper and cant seem to go any further. He was born in Scott County IL. I would also like any information about our native american heritage. My great grandma always said we were native american but I dont have any proof.

Hi! Just thought I would add my family history. I am a sturgeon from Greene County IL. My great great great grandpa was Jasper Sturgeon and he married Mary Ellen Knapp. He was from Scott County Illinois. They had 3 children that I know of for sure Albert , Cecil and my great great grandmother Belle. My uncle Cecil was still alive when I was a kid and I remember him distinctively. I was always told that the sturgeons were native american by my great grandmother. Dont know if this helps but I thought I would add it.

I was just researching on the N. Ireland website, PRONI and found a book: Pedigree of the Sturgeon Family of Ballylough, Kilmegan, Co. Down, Ireland, 1540-1985.
I am wondering if anyone has looked at this book, if there is a line of this Sturgeon family that came to the colonies, and just which line this is.

(PRONI: Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.)

I am going to Google this book and see if it can be found elsewhere.
Virginia Sturgeon was the daughter of John D. Sturgeon and Margaret Emma McElveen, my great-great grandparents. William James Sturgeon (my great grandfather) and John D., Jr. were her brothers. When John D., Sr died, Margaret Emma married Moses E. Lawrence (Laurence?) and as you noted, Virginia was living with them in 1850. The two boys were with Emma's father, William H. McElveen in 1850.

This is William Henderson Sturgeon, son of William and Susan Hubbard Sturgeon.--1850-1860 census, Scioto Co. Ohio, and 1870, Pike Co. Ohio.---William Henderson Sturgeon married Mary Ann Bruff Sturgeon, in Missouri, but, believe she was on 1870 census, with the family.---William Sturgeon, father of Wm Henderson Sturgeon, was born Va.(Scott Co.Va) about 1803, and Susan Hubbard Sturgeon, born ca 1805.--There were two Henderson Sturgeon's. Henderson who married Arvilla Cartright Sturgeon, Scioto Co. Ohio, moved to Jackson Co. Ohio, 1860 census. Gave his age as 40, on that census. Later divorced, and Arvilla Cartright Sturgeon, married Robert Jones.--
Gwen,
Thanks so much for the information about your relationship with my grandfather, Napoleon Bogan Sturgeon. He was first married to Mildred Caroline (Carrie) Walling and they lived in Moncks Corner. My mother Mildred Juanita was their only living child. I did not know him very well because Carrie died when my mother was just 4 and he was remarried to Savilla Atwell Atmore. My mother was raised by Bogan's brother and his wife. I do have some personal notes and papers of his which he had given to my mother.

Although I knew most of my mother's half siblings, I knew best Hazel Mae Sturgeon [White]. I am in touch with most of her children and communicate often with my cousin Sarah White.

The father of Bogan was William James Sturgeon married to Sarah Alice Stokes. They are buried in the cemetery of the Methodist Church in Scranton, SC.

If you would like to write directly to me, use frank.zipperer2@verizon.net

Thanks again,
Frank
I am in the Bond family. and the closest that I come to the Sturgeons is with William Cecil Sturgeon that married my aunt Florence Edith Bond. This week I have been looking at that line. William Cecil Sturgeon's parents were Marion Sturgeon and Elizabeth??? I am having all kinds of problems trying to clear up the Elizabeth's, there are so many and most of them don't have a maiden name. Perhaps you have had the same problem in the past. Thanks for the picture I do like to get those when I can. Lavania

Thank you for your response. My conversation with Walter Sturgeon of Floyds Knobs, Indiana and The Genealogical History of the Sturgeon's of North America by Claudius T. McCoy clearly states that the Sturgeon's are unsentimental and indifferent people. That's why the Sturgeon's maintained their livelihood outside of city limits and desired to live in the country. My Great Grandfather John Sturgeon II of Hart County Kentucky who migrated to Southern Indiana and other Sturgeon's via the Ohio River are still to this day a very reclusive group. My relatives of Southern Indiana are far between a group that is willing to share and/or converse with you on the street. Sorry to disagree, but, it is a known and factual past and present trait with the majority of Sturgeon's and not due to the community they reside. My home town of Washington, Indiana, Daviess County, maintains a conversational atmosphere among its residents, especially outsiders. And yes, they did get taken advantage of while in Pennsylvania prior to migrating to Kentucky. The Sturgeon clan is a very tightlipped, none of your business group. It's a shame that we as the present and future generation are losing out on family history due to their lack and refusal of conversation. Thank you for the post, thouroughly enjoyed the infomation. I hope to hear more of the Hart County Sturgeon's.
Larry Dean Sturgeon
Springhill, Florida
Washington, Indiana

The 1850 Census shows Squire and Nancy living in Hart County Kentucky. Squire, age 51 and Nancy 50. 1860 Census shows Squire, age 61 in Hawkins, Phelps, Missouri with Mary, age 20, Mary, age 18 and Porterfield, age 16. Nancy is not in Missouri for some reason. Divorce? Death? Not sure of the (2) Mary's within the household with a (2) year age difference. I've found that my Ancestors, (relatives), are quite strange, lack conversation, very secretive, lack interest in sharing family history and very difficult to trace. Mindboggling!!!! I grew up in Southern Indiana and still to this day have no idea of the history behind the Sturgeon's of North America. But, I keep trying.... ;>)

Mary Catherine Via Sturgeon b. 1849 in Albemarle Co. VA) was daughter of my gggrandfather Thomas Dabney Via. She was the sister of my ggrandmother Carrie Lee Via.
Evidently the Vias lived in Coldspring, Beulah township during and after the Civil War (Thomas D. Via CSA was killed nearby by Yankee sympathizer). Mary Catherine's mother Eliz Norris Via is buried in Beulah cemetery.I think she lived w/ the Sturgeons).

I have letters from the Sturgeons kept by my grandmother. I cannot say that I have found anything about a murder or duel but I did remember seeing something about a move and a letter from/ to Cabell Co., WV (very ironic because that's where I live now and there are Sturgeons in Huntington - also Vias from the same family).

I am now very interested in your mystery and digging into all those family letters. What should I be looking for? I do remember my grandmother mentioning Uncle Elmer. The Leonard family of Lecoma, MO is also related and might have information.

I am a Hart Co. native and Sturgeon. Squire is not in my direct line, but I believe he is buried in what is now Mammoth Cave National Park - possibly in Daniels/McDaniesl Cemetery. Go to Mammoth Cave web and search cemeteries.

As far as Sturgeons not talking? It is my personal belief that several of them may have been or knew of others who were stripped of land that they truly thought they had bought. Also, from my reading, it appears that Sturgeons were often on the edge of the frontier in Europe and America. They were the buffers for government and saw promises not carried out. They just didn't trust anyone and it carries over today. I remember my father saying, "It is none of their business," when I brought home a school form to be filled out. My dad was one of the most honest, upright men I have ever known. This is a trait of many citizens in our area, not just Sturgeons.

If it can be useful, I grew up in Hemingway, SC, in the 40s and 50s, and one of my close neighbors was Napoleon Bogan Sturgeon. We called him 'Uncle Bogan.' I remember him fondly and well, saw him every day nearly. He was retired from being a preacher and lived alone. I remember he received visits from his own children occasionally. He gave each of us our first Bible when we had our 16th birthday. If there is anything I can find out about him on my next trip to the area I will report back. I have always wondered about the Sturgeon family, he is the only member I knew personally. My own people there are Eaddy's and Oliver's, both families have been in that same area since the mid-18th c.

Gwen England

Re: Margaret Ann Sturgeon

I am a descendant of the Denison's who lived in Phelps Co., Beulah Mo. from the 1840's into the 1900's. There may still be relatives there that I don't know of.
I have walked through, photographed and took notes on the Beulah Cemetery several years ago.
My gggrandfather's sister was married to Isham Sturgeon. They moved to Beulah from Hart Co. Ky.
I have tried to reservh all the family members that I could. Nancy Sturgeon was the blind daughter of Delilah and Isham. I am not sure when she became blind. On one census she is in the census in her mothers household, while her sisters and a Julia Ann are listed at the Freema's. I believe that the Hankins are also at that household. It has been awhile since I studied this.
In a later census, Julia is listed with Nancy as a Clark. Nancy is listed as a Clark. I have not been able to find a marriage record for her or information as to her spouse was.
I do not have Margaret Ann Sturgeon on my database, so I am assuming that I was trying to identify her from the grave records.
The Freemans seemed to have several years of proximinty to The Denisons, Sturgeons, and Johnson's. If there is any relationship I would appreciate knowing. If there is any links I would like to know. Also to the Hankins, one of which married a Denison.
I have studied the Denison's, Edgars, Johnson, Sturgeons, Blacks, Followells, Maces, Via's and many more as they came into contact witht he family. Also know several others that are involved with these familys and might be able to help you.
Please contact me at momajo54@hotmail.com.

Re: sturgeon from uk and Newry Ireland

Where is Newry in Ireland?
My ancestor that came to America, Samuel, was either from Londenderry or Belfast, according to which website your researching.
You are correct that the Sturgeons came to Ireland from Scotland, however; they were originally from Suffolk county, England. But I have found that before that the Sturgeons were Norman descendants from the Norman invasion in 1066. Can't proove it, but the first recorded Sturgeon is supposed to be listed in the great census taken by King William known as the Domesday Book.

Miles was a traveling circuit preacher. He may have been married twice and had my grandmother (Myrtle Mabel Sturgeon Parnell) with second wife (Mary C Garrison). If you run into this family in your search would appreciate any info you find. Don't know if your Charles Samual Sturgeon and my Miles are related or not.

Thanks for your interest.
Darlene

"False" Sturgeon Line in WV

I ran across this and believe my brick wall Sturgeon is actually a Stodgill or Stodghill. Additional research has supported this. I thought this might be helpful to others who have run up against a brick wall. Please refer to:
_History of Summers County from the Earliest Settlement to the Present Time_ By James Henry Miller, Maude Vest Clark, 1908. This book is online in digital format at Google Books.

On page 44, in a discussion of Elizabeth Graham (1770-1858), it is noted that she married Joel Stodgill, and the topic continues on page 45 where this information is shared:
"While the real and proper name of Mrs. Stodgill is 'Stodgill,' the name of Sturgeon is very commonly used, and as such they are known. Mrs. Margaret Miller, of Gauley Bridge, in Fayette County, being one of the descendants of this lady and, until recent investigations, was under the impression that her descendants' proper name was 'Sturgeon.'"

Looking for descendants of John Wesley Sturgeon (1867-1934) and Mary Jane Rowe married 10 Apr 1905 in Toronto, Ontario.
