Mrs Sarah B. Sturges
Sarah Bird was born in the Dominion of Canada on December 25, 1856,
and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Charles Boyce, in Franklin,
Nebr., April 4, 1924. At the time of her death she had reached the
age of 67 years 3 months 9 days.
While the deceased was still a child, her family removed from Canada
and settled at Batavia, in the state of Illinois.
On December 25, 1875, at Batavia, she was married to Robert Sturges.
Four years later the young couple removed to the West and settled on a
homestead in Franklin county, Nebraska, south of the Republican river.
For many years they lived the life of pioneer citizens of the new
west. They passed through the trials and privations of the new
county, and made their contribution of life and service to its present
greatness and prosperity.
On June 11, 1901, Mr Sturges passed away. In the lonely years since
the death of her husband, Mrs Sturges has been richly plessed in her
children. She has made her home with the several children at various
times and the years of her widowhood were made bright by their love
and care.
Seven children were born to Mr and Mrs Sturges, of whom five survive
the mother. William Sturges of Bird City, Kansas; Mrs Nels C. Jensen
of Minitar Nebr; Mrs Chas Boyce of Franklin; Mrs Fred Hudson of
University Place, Nebr; and Robert Sturges of Fort Collins, Colorado.
Mrs Sturges is also survived by three brothers, George and James Bird
of Yates Center, Kansas and also nineteen grandchildren.
In early life, Mrs Sturges was converted and became a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church of which she remained a member through
life. She lived a devoted life, and as the years of infirmity drew on
she was ready to depart this world and be with God. In her last
illness she expressed a desire to see all the children once more, but
as that could not be, she declared again and again that she was
anxious to leave the world behind and be with God.
Mrs Sturges was a loyal friend, a good, God-fearing woman, and a most
loving wife and mother. Her tenderness toward her children was
unsurpassed, and although the physical presence of the mother will no
more be seen among them, the memory of the mother will linger with her
children as a benediction, as promise of glorious reunion yet to be,
and as an invitation to the Father?s house, whither the mother is
entered to await their coming.
?In my Father?s house there are many mansions. If it were not so I
would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you that where I am,
there ye may be also.?
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, Rev. N. G. Palmer officiating,
and interment made in Greenwood Cemetery.
