Ernest Sturgess (born 1888 - Killamarsh, Derbyshire, UK)

Please can you help me.

I'm trying to find out more about Ernest Sturgess born 1888 in Killamarsh, Derbyshire. His father was George Sturgess (born 1843, died 1890) and his mother was Elizabeth Sturgess (nee Wilcox).

He married Minnie Rebecca Tasker (my great Grandma) on May 26, 1913, and had children called George (1913), Katherine (Mabel) (1915), Nellie (1917) and Iris (1918). However in 1919, Minnie Rebecca Tasker had a child fathered by Matthew Burnham (Hilda), and then another with Matthew Burnham in 1921 (my Grandma) called Lily. They married in 1922.

I am trying to find out what happened to Ernest, if he was a casualty in the first world war (I can find an Ernest Sturgess who died in 1916 on HMS Black Price, but if this is him, it doesn't explain the birth of Nellie and Iris who have his name on their birth certificate). From this I can only gather that he possibly died between 1918 and 1919. I can't see any divorce records anything else.

I'd be grateful if anyone has researched this family or has any information.

Kindest regards

Paul Pounder

Hi,
My great great grandfather Alfred was born in Hungerford in 1843. He had a younger brother Matthew born in 1852. He also had brothers George, William, Henry, and Charles and sisters Martha, Mary, Harriet, Eliza and Emily. Alfred's parents were James Sturgess born around 1813 in Whitchurch Hants and Rachel Cox born in Hungerford in 1822. I think Rachel was his second wife. I think James parents were George Sturgess and Sarah born 1782 but this is a bit sketchy. Hope to hear from you soon. Donna

Hello:
Well my Sturgis/Sturges/Sturgess line comes from Lincolnshire, England. And yes since the one's that
came over to the USA from England, most did not read nor write, I have found them all over IL with all three spellings of the Sturges name.
I also know that Sturgess can be of German heritage too.
I wish I could give you more to go on. But I do have the Sturgis Family Crest, etc. If your interested, please email me @marthae101@sbcglobal.net
And I will be more than glad to share what I have with you.
Sincerely,
Martha in CA
I am at present researching my maternal grandfather's parents
Evan William Roberts and Annie Margaret Sturgess. Annie
Margaret's birth was registered in the Eden, NSW, area in c.1861. from her death certificate we found her parents were
given as David Sturgess and Helen (Ellen) Melanaphy. I have reason to believe that both parents died in the Victoria. Ellen in 1884
in Bendoc, Vic and David in 1901. Research has found that Ellen was probably born in Ireland but i have not been able
to locate where David was born. I am hoping someone may
be able to help me, please.

Trying to trace the history of Joseph Sturgess born 1858 youngest son of John & Elizabeth Sturgess of Billesdon, Leicestershire, England. Sent to Australia by his family at some stage and died 1940 in Canberra Hospital. Apparently no issue - anyone know anything about him?

I thought I was reply to the above message so I am sorry if it appeared unclear. Regarding the above, John and Elizabteh Sturgess of Billesdon, Leicestershire only had three daughters. The family history which we have shows no indication that there was also a son. I just wondered if there was any more information regarding this.

Thanks

Lucy

Therefore, if you have found anything further regarding this it would be of high interest to us.
Joel Edward Sturgess; Ann Graham (nee Grass)

I have begun doing research regarding the family of Joel Edward STURGESS and Ann GRAHAM(nee GRASS). As has been the case of others doing similar research, I have run into a dead end where it concerns Joel Edward STURGESS, born 1810. There is no indication as to where he was born or when he died, or his parentage; however, in one message, it was indicated he was born in the USA(NY?). I believe he died in Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any current information about Joel Edward STURGESS.

Hi - I just read your note indicating that you have been searching for info on Joel Edward Sturgess. I have recently begun a family search as well and have ended up at a dead end. I imagine you have uncovered most of the info I have, i.e. his wife--Ann Graham, etc. It looks as though this may be a tough one to search out. There is one elderly relative here in a Nursing Home that I plan to visit that I hope will be able to help.

I dont know about any connection to Hardy or Trafalgar but this *could* be your man
Lieutenant Dr. William Sturgess RN b 1788 Hamble, Hants died 1840? m Anne Portch.
His sons were Commander Richard Sturgess RN b 1820s ( Himself father of Paymaster Rear Admiral Richard Ernest Stanley Sturgess CB.(Companion of the Bath) RN 1863-1933) and his other son was Lieutenant Charles William Sturgess RN.(married to my 2nd cousin x4 removed) also born 1820s
Seems to me that this family got progressively more influential over time, as one might expect of an officer distinguishing himself in Napoleonic era
