I know they changed their name, whenever it made the most sense. Sturman/Stearman/Stewman/Stuman.
Any of the above that settled in NC must have been of that
family.
KY Sturmans, I'm out of the loop.
BUT sure, of the same family.
Some how.
You must get intuitive, sometimes.

My ancestor Thomas Sturman was probably in NC in the late 1700's before going to Mercer County, KY - where his daughter Elizabeth married George French in 1804. He is likely the man listed in the 1820 census as Humphrey Sturman in Sullivan County, IN.

What information do you have regarding Sturman's in NC?

"Plundering Time" by Timothy B. Riordan is a must read for
any descendant of Thomas Sturman.
My meager gathered research takes my family to North Carolina by way of Virgina. From there it's rough. Any collaboration
on Sturmans in NC?

rpcolley
Your messages are being forwarded from this message board to the Sturman family list, which you may consider subscribing to. I am a descendant of ancestors of Rosanna, William Sturman and Sarah Jackson. As such I am some sort of cousin to your friend, and I am interested in gathering descendant information on this family. I got your previous post about Emma and was responding to it. If most of your information is about the descendants of Emma, I would be interested in that. Can you contact me directly or through the list?
Rick Waggener
Walnut Creek, California, USA
sequoia@pacbell.net

I am researching my friend's family history and she is descended from Rosanna Sturman and William Ingram through their eldest child Emma Ingram born 1845. Emma married twice, firstly to Joseph Aingworth of Wolverhampton, they had 1 son (my friend's grandfather) and 1 daughter, Emma married secondly to Albert Grosvenor Jennings who was vicar of Isycoed. I am happy to supply further information if you are interested.
I realise it is a year since you posted your message so you may already have this information now. RPC

Sturman-Stearman-Stirsman VA to KY

My name is J.P. Johnson and I'm a descendant of America Stirsman Brown. She was the daughter of Josiah Stearman. And according to information I saw on Ancestry.com, he was the son of William Riley Steerman.

Josiah (or Joseph) was born in Todd Co., Kentucky about 1823. There is a William Steerman in Todd Co. in the 1830 Census.

In the 1820 Logan Co., Kentucky Census (Todd Co. was formed in 1820 from a part of Logan), there is a Foxhall (spelled Foxall) and a Joshua Steerman in Russellville.

Then in the 1810 Green Co., Kentucky Census there is a Foxhall - this is such an unique name that I assume the two Foxhall's are probably the same. Also the Foxhall in 1810 is 26 to 45 while the one in the 1820 is 45 and up.

The 1810 Green Co. Foxhall is listed about 5 lines away from William Stearman. There are two William Stearman's in Green Co. in the 1810, but the one by Foxhall is older, so I assume that is probably William Walker Stearman who served in the Revoluationary War.

Does anyone have information on this Foxhall? Is he William Walker's son? Nephew? And is there any information connecting William Riley Stearman (father of Josiah) to Foxhall?

Also who is this Foxhall? There is a Foxhall Sturman who married Elizabeth Neale in Westmoreland Co., VA in 1810, so I assume it isn't him - unless he married Ms. Neale early in the year and then immediately went to Green Co., Kentucky.

Thank you in advance.

JP Johnson

You need to try Hampshire, VA/ now Mineral WV. I'm pretty sure there was a Richard there. It was called Steerman, Stearman, etc. so be creative with the spelling.

Edward Bailey died in Hampshire Cty VA in 1828 (will written in 1825). His daughter Alice married James Sturman. I'm a descendant of Edward's son John. I'm trying to find out Edward's wife (Alice's mother) name. I think it's Eleanor and possibly her maiden name is Arnold but I'm not sure. I'd like to trace Alice's descendants.

A family history I once read said that William Walker Sturman (later Stearman) spent the winter with Washington at Valley Forge. I have been trying to find a record of this for my son's school project but haven't been able to. Does anyone have any information regarding William Walker Sturman/Stearman's Revolutionary War Service?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Ian
George and Louisa were my great great grandparents on my fathers side. My grandfather was Henry William Sturman, and one of his 12 children! was Cecil (Bill) Douglas my father.
I have only just found out that George was married twice and have been thinking that Phoebe was my great great grandmother.
My great grandfather, John Streets (Job) had a son John who signed up for the Australian army from Perth during the 1st world war at the age of 40 odd and ended up being killed in France in June 1917. His name is on the honour role at the War Memorial here in Canberra, and he is also commemorated at Villers Bretonneux.
I have managed to contact many of our relations recently and I am putting together a family tree. My email is richabc@tpg.com.au.
I would love to hear from you again.
Regards
Clara

Sturman/Steerman/Stearman DNA

Have any Sturmans, who know they are definitely descended from the Westmoreland Sturmans, ever done a DNA test? We, on the Steerman message board, are going bananas trying to determine if we are related to the VA Sturmans or are a totally different family. If you are interested let me know and we will try to set something up.

I realize that I am taking a chance that any of you are still on the message board about the Stearman family. My husband's family are now in Ky. My husband is descended from Luther Stearman. He was married to Clara Durbin ( second wife) and had 5 sons with her. I believe his father was William Thomas ( Willie Tom). My father-in-law was Lewis Glen Stearman. I had heard one time his name was changed from Luther to Lewis. My husband's middle name is Luther after his grandfather. We know very little about Luther Stearman. He and Clara moved to Illinois we believe sometime in the 1930's. He died and Clara moved back to Edmonson Co. ( Sunfish ) , Ky. with her sons. I heard Luther was a farmer. I don't know for sure. My father-in-law could not remember much about his father, he was quite young when Luther died. Glen and his younger brothers were placed in an orphanage for awhile , while his older brother stayed with their mother. I think Luther had a daughter with his first wife. The daughter's name was Icy ( Icee) Mae ( May). She lived with another family and took their last name. My husband's family lost touch with her and the last anyone knew; she was around the Paducah,ky. area. If any of this fits with your findings, PLEASE let me know. I have had such a hard time finding out anything about this man and his ancestors. I have been off the quest for a little while, life takes over sometimes; but now I am on the hunt again. My email address is: wetwomovin-on@comcast.net Thank you so very much

Hi Clara and Dawn
I'm happy to reply personally if you let me have your email address. I've got some stuff that I could scan and email to you if you are interested.
And...of course I'd love to know what you know!
My Grandfather, Herbert, known to all as "Pop" was injured at Ypres during WW1 and apparently had serious burns caused by mustard gas - I found this out long after his death of course! My Crandmother (Constance) was a member of the Hill family who were living in Bovingdon, Herts as early as 1841 - her father was Henry who was 4 yrs old at the time of the 1841 census.
Please get in touch.

Henry Stuerman, Augusta, GA; died 1795

I found the following obituary for Henry Stuerman in the Augusta Chronicle. I am not related in any way, but felt someone else might like to see this. The little poem about him, that was also printed, is very sweet.

June 20, 1795: Augusta Chronicle (GA). DIED on Wednesday last, Mr. Henry Stuerman, late merchant of this place, a native of Holland, and of very reputable connections in that country; his remains were attended to the place of interment by a number of the most respectable citizens in the neighbourhood; and having been of the Augusta artillery, that corps accompanied the funeral and paid the usual military honors to the memory of the deceased.

Beyond the ruthless blast of time,
Poor Stuerman now we find;
Who while on earth did ne’er design
An evil to mankind.

If truth and condor pave the way,
To younger shining sky;
Then truth and condor sure must they,
Receive him up on high.

An heart that weeps at others woes,
And seeks to quiet strife;
Will surely meet a calm repose,
Beyond this troubled life.”
Re: Sturman Family

I am researching the family name of Stirman here in the UK. I have got back as far the early 1700's in Northamptonshire. I think that my ealiest records are correct and that they are actually in the name of Stermer. I agree completely with you that many of the spellings that we come across are those of the registering parish official, and as such any of the spellings can be correct at any time. I actually have one family who has both the Stirman and the Sturman names at the same time, some children with one name, and their siblings with the other.

As Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire are very close to each other do you think that we may have a distant connection

In researching my husbands family, I've noticed distinct family appearances. We recently found a photo of an unidentified young relative from the turn of the early 1900 (I think) which looked exactly like my husband when he was a young boy. Needless to say that he was shocked to himself from that time period. Please look at some of the images that I've posted to see if your Sturman family has the look of ours.

http://communities.msn.com/BrendaSturmanandHerPhotographs/ho...

I will be adding more images as I process them to low res from high res.
