If I recall correctly, my grandmother's name was Monserrate Martin Suarez. I know my mother was born in Corozal, Cristina Castillo Martin. Since the last name is the mother's I believe Suarez was my grandmother's mother's name. I don't know very much more except for the name of other relatives that don't have the Suarez name. Hope to go there again (was there once 20 years ago with my mother who is now deceased) and check a little further into my ancestry.

Re: Origin of Pereira Surname

Hi, I am glad I saw your post, as it helps me indirectly. I am researching my Fidels who are from the Ukraine. Our Fidel branch is of Jewish ancestry. Because ancestral documentation is very difficult to find in Eastern Europe, I decided to use Y-DNA to try to go deeper into our ancestral roots. I had no 12/12 marker matches; however 11/12 matches on the Y-DNA show roots in and around Ukraine and eastern Europe. When I go a little further and look at 10/12 matches, I found individuals of Jewish ancestry in Greece, Cyprus, and Romania, as well as the surname Pereira from Portugal. We had suspected that the Fidel ancestors were of Spanish Jewish ancestry, but we had nothing concrete until the Y-DNA results, in combination with your post acknowledging Sephardic ancestry. So our distant ancestors were most likely Sephardic Jews who left Portugal or Spain following the Spanish Inquisition. Thank you for your post.

Ricky,
I'm your cousin Belynda from San Antonio (Now living in Katy, TX - suburb of Houston). My dad is Cecilio 'Chilo' Cantu Suarez. We visited you guys in November of, I believe, 1972. It snowed in Lubbock that year and we made little pitiful snowmen. ;-) I'm wondering if you got the information you were looking for. I think your best source would be someone who actually lives in Robstown. I haven't been there since 'Tia Tere' died. It would be nice to connect with my Dad's side of the family. I have not kept in touch as I wish I had.
Hope you get this message.
Belynda Suarez Botello
bsbotello@gmail.com

Anthony,

There's a good chance we will find a connection, but I'll need more information about your Suarez family. Mosquera is another local name with a link to my family. My great-grandmother's oldest brother, Ventura Moscoso Garcia (born 1893), married Encarnacion Mosquera. They had two known children, Manuel and Luis.

I don't recognize the name Kueiruga/Queruga.

I think you're right about the name Baltasar. That seems right to me.

I am trying to trace my family history. My grandfather was Domingo Suarez, originally from Asturias Spain I believe. He settled in the Philippines and married Zoraida Buch (originally from Argentina). They were in the Philippines during the Japanese occupation (1940's), if that is any help. They had many children (about 12) including Alvaro, Willie, Jose, Fernando, Juan Miguel, Antonio and only one daughter, Josephine (my mother). Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi! My paternal grandmother was Josefa Suarez. She lived in NYC on the lower west side about the early 1900's. From what I understand, her family owned a small building. She later married my grandfather, Andres Vieiro. They had a large group of children, the ones I do remember are Andres, Antonio, Isabel, Luis and Josefa. When they had all their children, they went back to Galicia. They lived in the area outside of LaCoruna called Breixo (I think I spelled it corrected). That area is not very far from Mera. I don't know if this will help since I have been trying to find information about the Vieiro's here and have not come up with much. Let me know if that matches any of your informaiton.
Andiana, thank you so much - where in NYC did your family have their boarding house. Apparently, I was told that my family had theirs somewhere on the lower west side - before 14th street....do you have any idea? I also know that my grandparents married at St. James church on the lower east side. The priest I spoke to said that it appeared that there were a lot of Spanish people who attended that church and he had no idea of why since, at the time, it was more of an Italian neighborhood...I said it might be becuase St, James is the patron saint of Spain...at least I thought so. Anyway, yes, if you find anything, I would love to hear it. I have put information out on the Family Tree under Vieiro, if you find anything please feel free to contact me. Thanks so much. By the way, I lived on the lower east side most of my life, I lived not far from the church. I always tried to figure out why my dad settled there. My dad never mentioned anything about his parents so I don't know anything about them. Any information might be helpful.

Adriana,

Unfortunately, I have little further information about Suarez family. Joaquin Suarez married Dominga Mosquera in Liverpool, England in 1892. Their son, Antonio born in 1900 moved to Buenos Aires but I do not know when. Dominga Mosquera had a brother Agustin Mosquera who was born in Vilaboa, La Coruna. Their father was Jose Mosquera and their mother's family name was Pita. I realise that it is not much to go on.

I am also researching Suarez from La Coruna, Galicia, Spain. My Great grandfather Joaquin Suarez, born about 1866 moved to Liverpool, England and married Dominga Mosquera also from La Coruna in 1892. Joaquin's marriage certificate indicates that his father was a farmer by the name of Baldasha Suarez and his mother had the family name Kueiruga. I believe that the English registrar incorectly spelt the names based on their sound. Baldasha is perhaps Baltasar and Kueiruga should be Queruga. Any of these names sound like they may be related?

in mexico its starting to be common to find the suarez villarreal combination because suarez is a very common last name in central mexico like mexico city and villarreal is very common in nothern mexico like monterrey. As both are very large cities in mexico the combination nowadays it´s kind of common. But well its always nice to find someone who´s interested in genealogies and shares the same surnames.

regards
jose humberto
