Hi Debbie
I've just rejoined Ancestry and seen your post...
Are you still trying to find out more information about the Hobsons & Sudburys?
I am a direct descendent of Mary Hobson and Charles Alan Sudbury - they were my great grandparents.
Mary and Charles had 3 children, Irene, Malcolm and Margaret. Margaret Sudbury was my grandmother. She married James Stewart, and they had one child, my mother.
We have managed to trace quite a lot of the family tree on both the Sudbury side (including Harry Tatham Sudbury), and on Mary Hobson's side - not so much the Hobsons, but the Grammers (Mary's mother's family).
I'd love to hear from you to find out where you fit in!
Kind regards,
Cathy

Hi Jenny,
It is through Edward's wife Ida Leal that I am connected. In researching I have only stumbled across 2 children from this marriage, Edward Charles (b 1912 d 1979 in Blackpool) and his older sister Eileen Muriel (b 1909, not sure when she died). At the time of Edward Charles' death she was unmarried and living at the same address. Do you know of any other children?
Alison

THere were some Mormon converts in the family who went to Utah, The family comes from Egmanton,Notts and before that London.

Jenny

Hi Sue,

Yes I think young Edward is my family...or the one who married into my family. I believe in 1891 the father Edward Sudbury was in a sanitorium, listed as a retired coal merchant. He reappears with Martha and son Edward in the next census. I am mostly curious if there are any living children/grandchildren of young Edward and his wife Ida still around. Sudbury is a much nicer/easier name to research than Taylor!

Thanks
Alison

Hi Alision

my SUDBURY family are from Liverpool and I've come across your family in my research but I don't think we are connected...my grandfather Edward was born Liverpool 1884.

If you search the marriages on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk you will see that Edward SUDBURY married Martha MINTON in 1884 at St Mary in Edge Hill, Liverpool

In 1891 census Martha is 31 and alone with 5 year old Edward in Ormskirk, occ coal merchant. She was born Chesteron, Staffs.

is this your family?

SueS

Dear Madam,
my name is Lawrence Sudbury and I live in Milan Italy. As my parents divorced when I was very young I don't know much about my English roots. All I know is that my father's name is (was?) John Francis Sudbury, son of Patrick and Dorothy Sudbury and brother of Claire, Jane and Patricia Sudbury, living in Forest Hill - London at the end of the 60s. My mother (Italian, Silvana Asti) told me my family was from Ilkeston area. Unfortunately that's all I know as I haven't heard from my father in last 36 years (I'm 38). Do you know anything more which could help me tracing my origins? Thank you very much, Lawrence

Do you happen to have any more information on Edward Sudbury please including where in Scotland he moved to? I am Robert S udbury's great granddaughter, I believe his father was born in Egmanton, Notts and he was called Thomas Sudbury married to Margaret. I would also be interested in any further information please on Samuel J Sudbury such as what he did for the Mormons etc. Many thanks Sue
Hi Susan, I don't have anything on my trees which links Samuel John Sudbury to Carlton. Are you related to Robert or to Samuel? Samuel was my g.mother's gt. uncle and also a cousin as her g.father md. Ann Johnson Sudbury - Samuel's sister, they were also 1st. cousins. I know quite a bit about the family and Samuel's emigration to Utah if you need any info. about them. Samuel's bro. Edward moved to Scotland. There are links to London, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and the Egmanton area of Notts. His sister Mary and family emigrated with him. There were two more lines of the family who went to the U.S.A.
Sorry! Archbishop Simon was Simon of Sudbury. His father's name was Nigel Theobald, a respectable family from Sudbury in Suffolk.
Samuel John Sudbury of Egmanton in Nottinghamshire can be traced backwards from his father, also Samuel b. 14 Aug 1793, m. Mary Wardell 18 May 1819. Both events were in Egmanton Notts. All references are in the IGI. The Johnsons came in in the previous generation, Samuel's grandfather Edward who married Anne Johnson in 1785. Veronica

Thanks for your help. My grandmas' grandfather was md. to Samuels' sister Anne Johnson Sudbury who was also his cousin so were doubly related. Do you think there is any truth in the family legend that we are descended from Archbishop Simon Sudbury? We are descended from Samuel Sudbury and Mary Truswell.Jenny.

My mother was a Sudbury from the Halstead, Essex, line. I did a basic one-name-study of the name some years ago, now superceded by the internet.
You can contact the Mormons by copying the address from any entry in the IGI. Or any letter to Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, Library, Utah will get there, enclose an International Reply Coupon.
If you are in the U.K., a visit to your nearest Family History Centre attached to a Mormon Church (look in phone book) would be helpful.
Good luck, Veronica

My name is Tanja Peek. My daddy was Robert Lee Sudbury II. He was born in Marlin,Tx. I only know as far back as my great grandfather. His name was James Edwin Sudbury. He was born in Falls County,Tx in feb 1883. As a child I was told the Sudbury's had come from England and first settled in Sudbury Mass. Then split up, some going to canada others to Tenn. then Tx. I wish to take my mother to England in June 2005. I thought it would be nice if we could trace the relatives if any still exist in England.

why not get a copy of his marriage certificate which will give you his father's name and occupation and an address in 1866 which may give a clue. You have been really unlucky if none of those census returns give his place of birth.

Sue
