Hi Lori -

I am Carla. Carl Sudduth (Sherman's brother) was my grandfather. I too have hit a roadblock with regards to James Ellsworth's parents. I am wondering if he took on the name Sudduth but really has a different father. I am having difficulty finding his birth cert but am fairly certain that his mother is Martha Jane Sexton.... Have you found anything as of recent?

Carla

I am researching the Sudduth line that is now in Pontotoc MS. So far, I have traced all the way up to John Fielding Sudduth; however, I can not get any further.

Fielding was born in VA in 1785, married to Rachel McMakin, and died in Greenville, SC in 1863.

Some people suggest that Fielding's father is Rubin (or Ruben); however I can not find evidence of this individual. Does anyone know more about this line?

I think he was the older brother, and my grandfather was Freddy Birdsong Sudduth, from Natchez.
I am going to conclude the Winnie's last name (married) is McElwee since there are some many newspaper sources. It can get confusing because Winne had a sister named "Bertie". My line brances from Winnies' brother: Charles A. Sudduth. So that makes us "family".

W. McElwee listed on one more. I assume these are newspapers from McComb, MS.
What relation are you to Winnie? We must be great-great cousins or something!

I think it was Winnie. However I am confused as to the Spouse. I have seen newspaper clippings (one from the McComb Enterprise Journal) that list the children and there is a Mrs. R.W. McElwee. But if you go to the below link of Pike County MS Marriage records you will see Winnie Sudduth married a R.W. McElveen. (So I am not sure which is correct). If you have more than one newspaper sourc that states R. W. McElwee i would tend to think that would be the correct name.
http://www.co.pike.ms.us/cgi-mcr3/MCMMCGI2?HTMCNTY=MS57&...;
I did find more of my paperwork from our family search, and Winnie Sudduth married Bert McElwee of Jackson, Mississippi. I have copies of our great-grandfather's (Thomas Jefferson Sudduth) obituaries from several newspaper clippings, and the children are all mentioned under married names.
Just curious, was Winnie her actual name? Or could she have been given the name of Wilmot, and used Winnie as her nickname?

I have a copy of the 1860, 1900 and 1910 census with the family info, but I have no idea who the spouse of Winnie was. We did visit the family graveyards in Pike County before the massive hurricane destruction, so I am not sure what is left (live in Wash state).
Please feel free to contact me.

Liz, Yes the cemetery is down that gravel road and about 100 yards down from the cemetery is where my cousin lives on the right and her sister lives in Elliot,MS, but I'm sure if you go to the cemetery and thru the gate on the right middle ways then go over to the right all the way back towards the fence you should find Joe Meek, he was born 6-20-1880 and passed 10-5-1969, he was married to Bessie Lee Ray and Edith Morgan Word and their both there to and brothers W.A. Ben, and Ed, Thanks but I'm trying to find anything about William Burrell Huggins and still searching over in Leake County for him.

From "Commemorative Biographical Record of the Counties of Rock, Green, Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Wisconsin", J. H. Beers & Co, 1901, Chicago, IL.

The following is an excerpt from the entry regarding John Cline; the entire entry is available at http://www.geocities.com/scarletgen/lafayettecowi/clinejohn....

Our subject attained manhood in his native State where he married Mary Ann
McMANNES, a native of Ireland, in 1839, and seven children were born to this
union, six now living: Sarah, Mrs. ABRAHAM; John T.; George D.; Mary Melvina,
Mrs. LOFFSWOLD, of Lyons, Iowa; Fanny, wife of M. F. HOWREY; and Melissa, wife
of L. B. HOWREY. Mrs. CLINE died Dec. 20, 1891, and on April 19, 1893, our
subject married Miss Margaret D. SUDDUTH, who died April 9, 1895. On Nov. 27,
1895, he wedded Mrs. Angelina (SUDDUTH) HILL, a sister of his second wife, who
was born in Kentucky, a daughter of John and Editha SUDDUTH, who passed all
their lives in that State. . . .
Mrs. CLINE came to Highland, Iowa county, with two brothers, William and
Franklin SUDDUTH, in 1846, and in February, 1847, married Francis A. HILL, from
Buxton in the State of Maine, near Portland, a lawyer by profession, and a
finely educated man, interested in lead mining in Iowa county, being associated
with C. C. WASHBURN and other leading men of the early days in the lead
regions. He died July 15, 1850, of Asiatic cholera, after which Mrs. CLINE
took charge of his business of surveying, and she met many of the leading
people of the day, of whom she can tell many interesting tales. Mrs. CLINE has
a daughter, Fanny A. HILL, whose devotion to study broke down her health, and
has made her an invalid. Mr. and Mrs. CLINE have a pleasant home, and are
numbered with the best people of Lafayette county. They are consistent and
valued members of the M. E. Church.
I am tracing William Hardwick Sudduth and Louis (or Lewis) Sudduth who were married to sisters Philadelphia Moffett and Caroline Moffett. These couples moved from Bath Co., KY to the Lead Region in Iowa County, WI in approx 1839. I think Wm Hardwick & Philadelphia arrived first with 3 small children. Wm Hardwick and a partner opened one of the first mines in the area and platted the town now called Highland but then named Franklin (after the youngest son of Wm Hardwick.) Other family members moved from KY to WI also -- a Moffett brother in 1846 or 7 and I think at least one other Sudduth brother -- your information is the first indication I have found that a Sudduth sister and husband may also have been in the group. I have much information re: the Moffetts, very little re: the Sudduths. I will share what I have if it is of interest & would be interested in seeing what you have, especially the letters. Thanks very much.

I'm looking for any information on Sudduth's in Mississippi including George Sudduth who was the son of John Sudduth and Lula Lacey. John Sudduth was the son of John Sudduth and Sara Frazier. Family lore says that this family line may have been Choctaw Native American. I would appreciate any information that other researchers have on this line.

Thanks,
Cathy

Do you have any more information about Getrude's parents? names, dates & places? have you tried locating her family in the census returns?
------

There are a few people that I have encountered online that are connected to the Randolph Co AL Sudduths. One them, Jim Sudduth, has done an excellent job of tracing the origin of the family to early 1800s, Barnesville Ga. The last I heard, he was attempting to connect them to Sudduth families in Virginia and the Carolinas-----

Good Luck!
After they married they lived with Ermina's parents for at least one year. I have information on the Roberts and would like to share. There are not many who descend from this line. James & Ermina had daughters and some died young. At least 2 daughters lived to be adults and married. I'm hoping there are descendants of this line who would like to have some information I have.

Scott,
Here's another possibility for you. My ancestor, George Sudduth, was born somewhere in VA in 1820. In about 1831 or 1832, his mother, the then widowed Sarah "Suddith", came to Union County, OH. Sarah's children were William W. (b about 1815), Priscilla (sp Moses Dean), George W., Jemima (sp John Milton Smith), and Mary (sp David Davis). I wonder if your Sarah could have gone to Ohio after Horace got married.
