I now have new information on our Suffern family. I have not yet researched who 'Miss Suffern's' parents were or her first name nor the parents of her niece Isabella. However, I have looked into the Suffern history a bit further back. They were indeed French Hugenots who descended from an Italian family in Lucca Italy (Tuscany region). In the 14th century this family migrated up to Provence in France. There are two areas there the family seemed to live in - Saint Tropez (there is a Suffern Castle where the Count (Marquis) named Suffern lived and also a village called St. Cannat, near Aix en Provence. There is a photo of a chateau (Suffren Chateau) that the Sufferns/Suffrens left behind in France. Trophine Suffern/Suffren had Protestant sympathies and after his family were born, left for England. His son James went to Northern Ireland and all the Sufferns there descend apparently from him. Two descendants of his, brothers John and perhaps a William, emigrated to the U.S. in 1763. John founded what is now known as Suffern, New York.
My own Suffern ancestors are the Miss Suffern and her niece Isabella. Now that I have the more ancient history (and a fascinating one it is) I will try and spend time finding out what Miss Suffern's first name is and that of her parents and any siblings. Also, ditto for her niece Isabella.
Any clues out there from anyone that could help?
