I recently sent for Eliza Sugars' (William Sugars' daughter) birth certificate and her mother's name is given as Mary Clark. The 1841 Census gives her birth year as 1792. I haven't been able to find any records of her birth or marriage. She died giving birth to Eliza.

Elusive Bedfordshire marriage record

I am trying to find the marriage record of William Sugars of Cardington and Naomi Taylor of Cotton End somewhere in Bedfordshire approximately 1840-1850. I have all William's and Naomi's parents' details and details of all of their children, but haven't yet managed to locate marriage records.

I suspect that Naomi, coming from the Baptist stronghold of Cotton End might herself have been of the Baptist religion, but have no confirmation of this fact.

If anyone can provide any firther information I'd be obliged. I have traced the paternal line of this Sugars family surname and have managed to document back to the 1490s. Willing to share information. Please contact me by email - gjksau at yahoo dot com dot au.

It has been a very long time since you posted this, but I, too, am working that line.

I have a little bit of information about Robert Thomas, but it is very difficult getting anything beyond his father and mother. I can't even seem to find them in the 1920 census.

Please contact me at rob.miller70@gmail.com and we will see if we can tackle this together.

By the way, Robert Thomas' brother Glen Monroe was MY grandfather.

It is now 2009 but I have just seen your quest for information about Maud Elizabeth Sugars who married Henry T Wood.I believe she had at least two sisters. One a half sister from her mother`s first marriage -Lilian b.1867 and Ethel b. 1880.
Her Father was Joseph Sugars a Grocer/Butcher in Cowper Rd Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire and mother was Mary Ann.
Joseph was the son of William Sugars and Naomi [nee Taylor]from Shefford, Bedfordshire and previously Meppershall,Bedfordshire. They had 10 children -and Joseph was their fourth.Their third child was Charles my Great Grandfather and he named his first chid Joseph [my grandfather]
Did Maud go to Canada and was that before or after she married Harry Wood. I have him as Harry but of course that is the traditional `nickname `for Henry.

Would like to know more about the connection and that branch of the family. Maud would be my First cousin twice removed I think.

Mary G

William SUGARS born Wilshamstead 1798 is my ggggrandfather. I have a fair amount of information on this rather troubled branch of my family. William was put in prison for desertion at one stage and his entire family was in Goldington workhouse ! The benefit is that his physical description was put on record !
According to me there were three YOUNG children - Elizabeth, John and William. William YOUNG married Mercy SMITH and had three children- Florence, Kate and Elsie.

David Hardy
Waalre - the Netherlands
