Elijah or Elizah Sugg / Suggs

Believed to be the missing son of Mark and Clara Bridges SUGG. Elijah was born 1811 in Wake Co., NC. He appears in the West Pee Dee River area in Montgomery Co., NC in 1840, later he appears in Huntington, Carroll, TN in 1850 and Bolivar, Hardeman, TN in 1860.

I am interested in proving his connection to Mark and Clara AKA Clary. Mark died in 1824 in NC. The family left for Carroll Co., in 1825. They remained there and in Gibson Co., until just before and just after the Civil War. Elijah's four brothers then migrated to Arkansas; Yell, Logan, Johnson and other counties near Ft. Smith. Elijah appears to have not made the trip. I suspect that since he doesn't appear in any census after 1860 that he could have died during the war era.

Elijah is thought by many to have died at an early age in NC. However, the Elijah I have found comes from the same general area and is born in the exact year of the missing child. He was the second born male and at age 14 may have stayed behind in NC to help with relatives or could have been apprenticed to be a carpenter, which he was in Carroll and Hardeman Counties. He married and had several children before moving to Tennessee. In 1850 he lived in the adjacent district (12 & 13) of one of his suspected brothers.

I would also like to know of any of Elijah's heirs remained in the area. I believe some were in the Ripley, TN area.

Elijah would have been my GG-granduncle. His brother William, b. 1810, was my GG-grandfather. Wm. was the first of the boys that moved to AR.

Thanks,

Jim Hooper
Memphis

I am researching the descendants of William G. Sugg/Suggs who married Mary Julia Presnall in Clarke County Alabama in 1816. They migrated to Oktibbeha then to Calhoun County, MS. They raised a large family. Their chidren were Horatio Nelson Sugg (1817 - 1848) who married Caroline Robinson; Harbert Thomas Sugg (1818 - 1912) who married Margaret Stovall and Sarah Matilda Sims (my great grandfather); Julia Ann Sugg (1822 - 1885) who married Dr. John Smith; Martha Ann Sugg (1826 - 1869) who married Dr. Stephen Joseph Terry; Mary Elizabeth Sugg (1832 - 1919) who married Dr. William Henry Lykes; John Absalom Sugg (1835 - 1901) who married Emily P. Roane; Elvira Jefferson Sugg(1838 - 1917) who married Dr. John D. Hereford and Richardson Owen Sims;
Mary Lee Sugg (1840 - 1924) who married Dr. Travis Strong and Charles Stith; and Olivia Pearson Sugg (1844 - 1911) who married Andrew Jackson Harris. I would love to share information on these families.

Joyce Sugg Lowery
Sterlington, LA

Sugg Family in Exeter c1750

Hi. Is anyone researching the Sugg line and found links to Exeter c1750. I've got links from present to 1732, and a couple of possible predecessors to this going back to 1680. I've also got a piece of research given to me for Suggs in Exeter going back the 1500's, but am missing the connection (if there even is one).

Any help appreciated.

Gez Sugg

Maybe we can help each other, my great grandfather was R.L. Gibson, the only son of Dr.Gideon Gibson and Cassy(Sugg)Gibson. Cassy was the sister of Cal Sugg. Since my father passed 2 years ago, I have taken a new interest in finding my relatives. Are you related to the Sugg family?
SGH

Kate Sugg Islington London

Does anyone have any information on Kate Sugg born about 1865 in Shoreditch London please? She named her husband as Alfred or Albert May on her childrens birth certificates, yet I cannot find a marriage for her. There is a marriage for her to a Stephen Coombes in 1882 and she does say that her maiden name was Coombes on her childrens birth certificates, but if it is definitely her married to Stephen Coombes it would mean that he died really soon after the wedding because her first son was born in February 1883 and she names the father as Albert May. I canot find a death for Stephen Coombes (not at the right time anyway) only a couple, months before she married.
If anyone has a Stephen Coombes in their tree (maybe born about 1860 ish) Id be really grateful to hear from you.
Her marriage was registered in Islington London.

Many thanks.

Ruby Sugg

In some of my family history information, I see two possibilities:

(1) A Ruby Sugg is listed as a child of Wiley Vincent Sugg (born 1887, died 1927) and Nora Scott. Wiley was the son of Wiley Calhoun Sugg (born 12-7-1843 in Montovista, Webster conty, Miss.) and Mary Frances Cooke (born 8-22-1855 in Slate Springs, Calhoun co., Miss.). Wiley Calhoun Sugg was the son of William Goodman Sugg and Sarah Ann Watson. William Goodman Sugg was the son of Horatio Sugg and ?? Harvey. Horatio Sugg was the son of Harbard Sugg and Zilphia Wright. Horatio Sugg was the son of Thomas Suggs and Martha Nelson. Thomas (born about 1735 in Norfolk, VA) was the son of Thomas Sugg and Mary Harbard. Thomas (born about 1720 in Norfolk, VA) was the son of Thomas Sugg and Sarah Eldrige. Thomas (born about 1691 in Norfolk, VA) was the son of George Sugg and Sarah Ives. George (born about 1665 in Norfolk, VA) was the son of William Sugge (born about 1635 in Bristol, England).

(2) (Part of same family origins) Michael Sugg, youngest son of Horatio Sugg (son of Harbard Sugg and Zilphia Wright) married Nancy Sealy and moved to Arkansas. He died in 1908 in Van Buren County, Ark. I have his children listed as Thomas (b. 1847), Mary (b. 1850), Wiley Harbart (b. 1852), Deloria Ann (b. ?), Martha (b. 1856), Alice (b. 1867), and Susan Eveline (b. 1861).

If either of these seem to fit, please contact me and I'll share the information I have. (I also plan to add it to the Sugg online family tree.)

Nancy Miller

William Spencer purchased land from Thomas Sugg in Anson/Montgomery Co., NC in 1763. It is believed that Wm. married Hannah Sugg there.
