Sorry for the delay, I was trying to export the information I have to show what I have on the Suggs. Your information is far more detailed on the Suggs than I have. My information just consists of the census records and the newspaper article of Herman's legacy as a Principal. This was far more than I could have expected. I'm hoping these attachments worked.

Re: Herman Suggs

Here is the information that we have about Uncle Herman. Please let me know if you believe we are talking about the same person. My grandfather, Dennis Sugg, was the brother of Herman Sugg, and both were sons of Bryant and Pennina (Penny) Sugg. Bryant and Penny were farmers in Greene County, NC. Both Penny and Bryant were born slaves. Bryant's death certificate indicates that he was a farmer/share cropper by trade who was born in North Carolina in November, 1844 and died on May 31, 1926. His father's name was Miles Sugg. The certificate did not reveal the name of his mother. It did indicate that the cause of death was Chronic Myocarditis which lasted for over three years. It indicates that he was buried in the Snow Hill Cemetery. The undertaker was Blount and Holloway.

A search of census records reveals that Bryant's father, Miles was born circa 1812 and probably married Rachael Sugg. Miles, Rachael, Bryant and Elizabeth Sugg were listed as living in the same home in the 1870 census. Miles was 58 years old, Rachael was listed as "keeping house" and aged 47 years old, while the Elizabeth Sugg was listed as "farm laborer" at age 48. The house in which they lived was listed as house number 549 in the census records of Olds Township, Greene County, NC. It should be noted that census records prior to 1870 did not list slaves by name. They were only listed by sex and age. Therefore, an accurate search using these records is difficult. From stories handed down, Bryant was said to be a "house boy" to a North Carolina State legislator. Bryant is said to have traveled with him everywhere he went. This legislator also was an officer in the Confederate Army. Bryant earned a reputation as being a great barbecue chef. Consequently, he was called upon to cook barbecue for many political gatherings. According to Pennie Sugg's death certificate, her parents were Tom and Gatsey Bryant, both born in Greene County, NC. She was born in Greene County, NC (Olds Township) on June 4, 1850 and died June 8, 1924. She was a farmer by trade. She is buried at the Snow Hill, NC Baptist Cemetery (Colored). Her burial site was confirmed by my brother during the summer of 1992. It is located at a black church at the southern city limits of Snow Hill, NC beside the city water tower. There were few records to be found in the Greene County Court Records since the courthouse was burned during the Civil War, rebuilt and burned again several years later. However, a document was located in this courthouse in the year 1992. It read as follows: "Penney Sugg of the age of twenty one years and upward wife of Bryant Suggs of Greene County with his consent testified by the signature hereto enters herself as a free trader from the date of this registration hereof. Signed: Penny Sugg (her signature), Bryant Sugg (mark).

She kept an article of Herman in regards to his profession that was in the paper. I'm sure this must be overwhelming for Eulalia and Robert. Guess they never thought anyone would be looking for them through this site. LOL! Hopefully Eulalia shared the pictures I sent.

I look forward to learn more.

Rochelle

The Rolling Suggs cemetery is in southwest Attala Co. I have never seen the cemetery; however, I was told by a Ms. Joyce Sanders about 25 years ago of the general location. At that time a north/south paved road (probably the most western such road in the county) existed and it was east of that road a few miles north of the Madison Co. line. It is not accessible by conventional (perhaps an off road vehicle)and is a bit of a hike from the road.

I am descended from Catherine Suggs who married Wilson Redwine Dumis. A Rolin Suggs appears in the 1840 Madison Co, MS census. I also have a record I found in a handwritten book of reminiscences of early Attala Co, MS. In it the author says that Rolling Suggs was a resident of the county when it was formed in 1833. If you are still out there I would like to share information with you.

He was born in 1890 and died in 1936 in Orangeburg, SC. I am really interested in determining who his parents were. I recall my grandfather telling me that he was from Cove City, NC. However, I have found that George S list Farnville, NC as his birthplace on some documents from the early 20's. I have no real clue who his parents were. I have only learned recently that he left his family in SC for ? I would guess another woman. That would also be an interesting part of my family tree I would like to find. Please email me if you know of any Sanders/Suggs families that may have have had a child around 1890. I have a picture if that helps- its posted in my tree. Thanks, Kyle
chicoragunworks@yahoo.com

Linda,

This is not my direct line. His wife was my gggrandfather's sister. But, I have done quite a bit of searching on him. I have never been able to put him with any parents or siblings. I have seen Hiram and wondered but never had anything concrete to tie them together. There is a letter written by one of Rollin's grandsons in which he states his "father's father just seemed to appear out of nowhere", and that seems to be the truth still to this day. Rollin was married first to Elizabeth Barton Sep 9 1818 in Marengo Co AL. They divorced in MS in the early 1830's. I have the record of that somewhere, but I have not been able to find it. I got it at the MS Archives in Jackson. Those are the earliest for sure records I have of him. There are others directly related to him that may have found something on him to put him with siblings, but I have not been in contact with them in several years. You may try joining the Attala Co Mail list as they are still there, I believe.

If you find anything, would you keep me in the loop?

Thanks,
Rayedene

Thanks, WA. For info about your family, go to www.genforum.com and type in "Itawamba Co., MS" in the finder box. Then type in 3620 to go to this message. It has your family's info along with mine and others in the Suggs family. It will give you a good starting point for your research. You can post there, and those who have been corresponding a long time will be happy to assist you with info.

Good luck!
DNA Testing for Suggs Family Link

My family has been trying to find the missing Suggs link from NC to AL to MS. We are trying to locate the earlier Suggses who are supposed to be from NC or SC. We've seen both in the census records. We do not know who our gr-gr-grandfather was and only know that his wife was Mary Suggs listed in Itawamba County, MS from around 1830 - 1900s via her descendants. She was born in SC and must have died about 1858. The two oldest children, William Carroll Suggs and Joel Green Suggs, were born in AL, according to census records.

If you are a male carrying the Suggs surname, have you considered being tested for your Y chromosome DNA? We have a male Suggs in our family taking this test and will be included in a Suggs surname group. As people add on, any biological matches will be communicated to him with the opportunity to contact that person. He signed a release allowing that to occur as do others who want to be contacted. There are a few testing services. Make sure to select one that is reputable with a large participation.

There hasn't been any new info discovered about our Suggs family in a while. I figure the only way to get a break in the research is for someone's DNA to connect with another's. If you are a male carrying the Suggs surname from any VA, NC, SC, AL, TX or MS Suggses, you might help us with the missing generation, if you take the test.

Any male bearing the Suggs name can take the test. The more there are, the better everyone's chance of making the link between families. Thank you.
I have not done any DNA testing Iam a female and I do not have any brothers. I would have to get one of male cousins to agreed to be tested. If you are interested in DNA testing you can refer to the answer to my post prior to your post. That person seems to know all about it.

My Suggs ancestor came from North Carolina. Name was J.W. Suggs know by most as Will Suggs and that is all I know except that he had sister and a brother(no one knows their names) Apparently his parents died and he lived with an Aunt and Uncle in North Carolina and they owned some kind of mill. That all I have, so I haven't been sucessful in obtaining any more info.

Terry
I've been working with Jo Waller this past week trying to uncover this line. I'm PRETTY sure that I've found Josie's mother, Mary A Sugg in several census reports and her death cert in 1916. She was widowed and living with a grandson, Arthur, in 1900 and 1910. The informant on the death cert didn't know either of her parents. The informant was Wm. Suggs. I show Charley and Mary had a son William. Because Josie was born in 1872, she should be on the 1880 census unless they got missed. However, I've been unable to locate her anywhere up until the time she married Coleman. Have you anything further to add???
you can reach me at hill.h@att.net
Bonnie
