Re: Sullivan O'Brien connection Tiskilwa, Il

As far as any Sullivan connection in tiskilwa goes, there were to many Sullivans around that area in the 1860's and 1870's not to be related.

My gg-grandparents John and Julia Sullivan did not name their two oldest children after their paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, but my grandmother and her brother were named that way.

Back in 2001, before I discovered more information on my Sullivan family, we thought that my Sullivan's came from eastern Pennsylvania. Around 1971, my parents interview my great-uncle John Sullivan. He was born in 1892, so all of his information was passed down to him. Uncle John said that his grandfather came from eastern Pennsylvania working on building the railroads around 1858. He said his grandmother Julia Sullivan and her mother were working on the wash boards for the railroad workers. He said his grandparents were married in the Tiskilwa area around 1858. I have later found out that this is not true, as John and Julia were married in Rhode island in 1858 and never came here until 1860. The rock Island and Burlington railroad lines went through the area around 1854. But somehow he thought that they came from eastern Pennsylvania.

Back in 2001, I had communications with a Jerry Burk Sullivan, who was the great grandson of James J. Sullivan Sr., who was born to James Sullivan and Margaret Roach of Tiskilwa. He said the family later moved to Stroudsburg, PA and then to Philadelphia in approximately the 1880s, where James J. Sullivan founded a well-known hosiery company.

Are you related the Jerry family.

Thanks for you reply,

Norm Kane
Peoria, Il

Hello, this is not my Sullivan line so far, but I saw a tree yesterday where Alvin Ray "Buck" Sullivan was born in Arkansas, mother: Ethel, father: John. I checked a census quickly, and Alvin's name was listed as Alvin "L". So it could've been a mistake, coincidence, or they could've been on to something.

I tried looking up the tree again, but can't find it. (sorry!)

While this may not be your Sullivan, it may be worth checking out for you.

Wishing you luck on your search!

I suspect our Sullivans are connected, I just have no idea how. I found my Sullivans in a cemetery in Philadelphia, Pa. I know what your thinking, but it will become clear in a moment.

I suspect that Jeremiah Sullivan b. 1793 in Ireland arrives in the US sometime in the 1860s. He is married to Margaret (no maiden name) and has four children (an educated guess): Daniel, Dennis, Mary, and Hannah all born in Ireland between 1832-1845. All of these individuals are buried in Philadelphia.

On an 1880 census, I find Dennis' widow Marget Roche in Bureau County, Illinois with their children: Margaret, Jermiah, James, and Dennis (all born in Illinois).

I also find a death ceritifcate for Dennis where he dies on August 31, 1877 in Illinois but is shipped back to Philadelphia to be buried.

in 1900 I find Dennis' widow and family except their son Jeremiah b @1873 back in Philadelphia.

There just seems to be a connection. Perhaps Jeremiah b. @1793 and your gggrandfather's father John Sullivan were brothers? Where in line was Johna nd Julia's son Jeremiah born? If they named their children in the Irish tradition this may give us a clue. Fourth son would be named after father's oldest brother...just a clue perhaps!

This probably will just add to your confusion, but my gut tells me there is a connection

Alvin Ray "Buck" Sullivan

The above is my grandfather's name. Everything I have on him is heresay. We have never met any of the Sullivan's we are related to. I was told he was born in CA, was around 20 when he married my grandmother Martha Ann Sanders in 1929 in Potter county Texas and he had a wife in CA that he was in the process of a Divorce, which by the laws he had to wait a year for the Divorce to be final. The marriage between him and my Grandmother was annulled (because the year had not been up as of yet) but she was pregnant with my Dad already. She married a man named Parker who raised my father as his own. My dad's name originally on the birth certificate was Fred Clith (maybe Cliff) Sullivan but was changed by my grandmother to Virgil Ray Sullivan. He was born in Potter County, TX in 1930. His father signed the birth certificate. My grandmother was living with her sister Bessie Woodfin when she met Buck (nick name); he supposely died in late 40' in a plane crash. Buck's Dad and sisters lived in Potter County, TX also same time frame. Anyone who has any info on my Sullivan side of the family please contact me.

Joseph Burval's wife is a cousin of mine through the Sapp and Sullivan Line. I would love to have your Solomon's information for my file. I am descended from his brother William Jr, through his son Jefferson, and Jefferson's son, Columbus Jasper and C. J.'s daughter Emma etta Sullivan who married Sam Hammock and their son Wilson Hammock was my father. I shared all my info I knew at the time with Joe and have continued to share what I have found dince. I found Joe when I first started on this intriguing road to my ancestors in 1996. So I have very little to share with you if you have Joe's info.

You may contact me privately at laverne11@wildblue.net if you like.

That would be William Sr.
Solomon is listed in many places as dying in Lee county GA, but he actually died at the Battle of Marianna FL in the Civil War. He was too old to serve, but was a member of the Home Guard(old men and young boys). He died of wounds suffered in that Battle. They took a wagon across the Apalachicola River to bring his body home. He is buried here in Gadsden county FL.
He appears on the 1860 census in Gadsden county FL.
He WAS married to Susan Edwards and I descend from their son Henry Jackson Sullivan.
My correspondence with BURVAL site...
"I am fairly sure that your Solomon Sullivan who was killed in Marianna FL in 1864/65 is the same person as I show as Solomon Sullivan (1806-1857) married to an Irene about 1833 and having died in 1857 in Lee Co. GA. This is also the same Solomon who is found on the 1850 Census of Lee Co. Ga married to a Jane (age 31) with 8 children and the same Solomon who is found on the 1860 Census of Jackson Co. FL married to a Susan (age 26) with 5 children, three of which are have same names and ages as on the 1850 Lee Co. Ga census. It looks like my Solomon did not die in Lee Co in 1857, but rather moved with his family to Marianna, Jackson Co. Florida with his family and died in 1864/65."
So that is what I have so far...
Many thanks for your post.
Anyone out there with info on the William Sullivan(t) family?
THANKS!

If it is William Jr, then Solomon's mother was Lydia Peacock and Solomon was married at least 3 and possibly 4 times but none of the wives's was a Susan Edwards amd that Solomon died in the early 1900's.

If it is Solomon son of William Sr, he died after 1850, possibly Lee Co Ga and I know nothing more on him.

My
Margaret Sullivan (Gow) m Sam Kingston 1826 in Drimoleague, Co. Cork
Does anyone trace back to Margaret Sullivan who married Sam Kingston in the RC parish of Drimoleague, Cork? I believe Margaret was probably a widow, first married to someone with the surname of Gow. Thomas Kingston and Daniel Sullivan were marriage witnesses. Sullivans who served as Baptismal sponsors were Daniel and Joan. Sponsors with names other than Sullivan or Kingston include Donovan, Sandy, McCarthy, Forbes, Leigh or Seigh, Brennan and Ginley or Ginh. Most of their children emigrated to the U.S., residing in the state of Vermont. Ellen, who married John Richardson, remained in Ireland, and for a long time, Daniel, who married Johanna Crean, remained in Ireland before emigrating.
Sullivan O'Brien connection Tiskilwa, Il

I am trying to figure out the Sullivan/O'Brien connection for those who settled in Tiskilwa, Il in the 1860's.

In about 1985, I found an article in the Bureau County Republican, Princton, Il dated 9/14/1911. Sheffield News (I think?) "Miss Nellie O'Brien visited her cousin Dan Sullivan - mother Mrs. T. F. O'Brien". Dan Sullivan was my ggrandfather. Later in a little blue book that belonged to my great-aunt Marjorie Sullivan, I found the marriage date for a Nellie O'Brien and James Hopkins, being 10 Apr 1929.

Nellie O'Brien was the daughter of Timothy O'Brien and Margaret Canty. Margaret Canty was the daughter of Daniel and Julia Sullivan Canty.

Now where does the connections come to be? I don't know!

My gggrandfather John Sullivan, 1835-1897, was born in County Cork(?) Ireland. He came to the US in the mid 1850's, we think!

John was born on June 20 1832 (headstone) or in the year 1835 (marriage license, 1880 census). John's parents were John and Margaret Sullivan (marriage license). He married Julia Sullivan on Feb 16 1858, at St Joseph's church, Providence,RI. Julia (1835/7-1918, born Clare or Cork), was the daughter of John and Mary O'Brien Sullivan. John and Julia’s witnesses were James O'Brien and Maria Clifford.

John and Julia's first daughter, Margaret ( later Gorman) was born on Apr 12, 1859 and baptized at St. Joseph's in Providence, RI. There sponsors were Maria Reardon and Timothy O'Brien.

The 1860, dated 6/15/1860, census still has John, Julia, and Margaret in Providence, RI. Also with them were a Patrick, age 28, and Mary, age 23, Murphy living or visiting with them.

When their second child, Dan Sullivan was born (Dec 29, 1861), they were living in Indiantown Twp, Bureau, IL.

We have no other information of John Sullivan parents.

As far as we know, Julia Sullivan’s father passed away in Ireland and her mother Mary O'Brien Sullivan, supposedly from County Clare, married a John Riordan/Rreardon in Ireland or maybe here in the US. The 1900 census indicated that Mary O'Brien Sullivan Rirodan had 6 children: Julia, Mary (1841-1910) wife of Richard Hannan/Hannon, buried Butler City, Kn, Margaret, 1843-?, last known in St. Louis about 1868, two unknown, and one son by John Riordon, Walter, (1859-1884) boan and died in Tiskilwa.

So I am trying to figure out if John and Julia Sullivan had any other Sullivan or O’Brien relatives.

John and Julia did have a son Jeremiah marry a Katie O’Brien, the daughter of James and mary Ann McNamera O’Brien. They also had a son, John, who dated a Maggie O’Brien for 30 years but never married her, but I think that Maggie was Katie’s sister.

Any help would be appreciated.
If you are Joe Sullivan's granddaugher hopefully you can help. A couple of us are working on a list of players who attended high school in Washington State and have gone on to reach the major leagues. Your grandfather played from 1935 to 1941 for Detroit, the Boston Braves and Pittsburgh.

We see he was born in Mason City, IL, and have heard he went to high school in Washington. If you could tell me what high school he attended it would be a huge help.

Thank you.

Bruce Bennett
Wenatchee, WA

There was a cigar maker in Manchester NH--R.G. Sullivan Cigars. The company is long gone but the building is still there--complete with RG Sullivan Sign near the roof. It is located on Canal St. in Manchester, NH
You might check the census for that time period for Manchester. In addition the Sullivans for the most part were Catholic and the large "Irish" parishes in Manchester at the time would have been St. Anne's and also the Cathedral (St. Joseph Cathedral Parish) Hope this helps

If you check the US Census for 1860 or so, you'll find a ton of Sullivans living in Nashua NH. One branch immigrated from Sneem county Kenmare in Ireland. I only found this out because when my great grandfather filled out his application to join the Civil War, he put Sneem. Imagine my excitement when I found this. After emailing there, I discovered that unless I knew his nickname I'd have a problem because just about everyone in town was named Sullivan. Based on that comment, you might try starting there since they left in droves and probably all came to the same place (Boston) and dispersed from there. Good luck

I found my cemetery listing for the Prostestant Church cemetery in Bantry on Chapel Street. I have been told that the Sullivan family helped build this church, which is now is ruins. The Sullivans buried there are: Jeremiah Sullivan (1861 - 1/30/1936) & his wife Diana (1858 - 5/4/1941) & Robert Sullivan, his mother, brother & sister. There are several other names that are related to my Sullivans: Jagoe, Levis, Swanton & Vickery. If you are interested in seeing this cemetery transcript. I can send or fax it. I would be interested in a list of your Bantry/Tedagh obits & Mass cards. Patrick

Darby Sullivan genealogy

Doing research at SLC, I came across a film that might interest those working on this line. I took only sketchy notes, so I hope this is correct. The film was #1,145,781 item #5. It said the article was originally written for a magazine: The Magazine of VA Genealogy and titled "A Sullivan Family of Stafford County, VA" Vol 28 1990. It has a detailed genealogy of The descendents of Darby Sullivan.

Most importantly, The author adds notes at the end saying that he did additional research after the artcle was published resulting in some correction. The most important of these was that he found out that "Darby 1",s wife Elizabeth Snowdell died childless and gives his source. I did not record the details sadly so you will have to order the film and check it out if interested. I would recommend a search for this film thru the SLC catalogue before ordering to make sure I got the number correct

Hope this may help someone.

I'm not Joe Sullivan's granddaugther, but I did find information when researching my "Mason City's Famous & Infamous," that Joe went to high school at Silverdale High School (now Central Kitsap) in Kitsap Co. At that time, I was able to access a 2006 article by Aaron Managhan for the Central Kitsap Reporter, but cannot find it now. Good luck with your research.
