Hi JW ... thanks for the post. It would be great to know what your Y-DNA tells us .... have you or any of the other family members you share info with participated in a Y-DNA project? I'd love to compare numbers. And, if not, you or someone else in the line (must be a male with the family surname) could join our Smelser / Smeltzer Y-DNA project at Family Tree DNA and see how all of the pieces fit together if they do at all. We do see that at least one of the family members in one of the Seltzer lines is close to our Paulser Smelser line suggesting a common ancestor a long time ago.

Mathias Seltzer is traced back to Germany, 1600 with the Seltzer spelling. His descendants in this country have surnames of Selser, Sulser, Sulcer, Selsor, Celsor, etc. While not eveyone in this country with those surnames is a descendant of Mathias, there are MANY of us.

There are some who also speculate that Mathias was actually a Smelser as well. That's where the Y-DNA testing could come in so handy. Maybe you can help me convince one or more of the Sulcer / Sulzer / Sulser clan to join the family project and see.

Hi Thomas, thanks for posting. No Sulser's in the mix yet. Not too many of them around with that spelling these days. In at least some cases we find the "core" name to be Schmelzer (German version) and Smelser (Americanized version) with lots of variability in spelling. You can keep watch by checking the Family Tree DNA website under the Family project surname of Smelser or Smeltzer (I think Sulcer works too). Click on "Results" to see what we are finding.

Who knows .... there is at least a chance that we are sharing surname derivatives. Let's see....Y-DNA will tell us.

I recently bought a wonderful formal picture. The couple is identified as Theodore TRAYLER and Lela ELLIS, the daughter of Lelia Pearl Ellis. This photo was sent to Aunt and Uncle George SULSER. So, I'm guessing that either the TRAYLER or ELLIS family would be related to the SULSER family.

I found Theodore and Lela TRAYLER in the 1920 Census in Justice Precinct, Hemphill County, TX. They have a baby Maxine P. TRAYLER age 1 3/12. Also Pearl Ellis, age 38, is living with them.

I am not related, but I would like to connect this photo with a family member or a family researcher. Please contact me directly if you have an interest in this photo.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Kathy@craftsbykathy.com

John Sulser Obituary

Well known East Lynne man died Sunday night.

John Sulser, 76, was about town in East Lynne is seeming good health, but that night (Sunday) he died. Funeral arrangements have been made awaiting the arrival of a nephew, Junior Hubble, from an army camp in Wyoming, but the possibility was that they would be on Thursday of this week at the East Lynne Methodist Church. Burial at Pitts Chapel cemetery.
Mr. Sulser, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Sulser, Sr. of this community, was born in New York and brought to Cass by his parents when he was about five years old. He was reared in Cass and here was marrid to Miss Ola Hubble, by whom he is survived. Also there is one daughter, Mrs. Opal Strikfadden of Kansas City. In addition there are four brothers, William Sulser, Tacoma, Wash., Frank Sulser, Lone Tree, Chas. Sulser, Drexel, and Fred Sulser, Pleasant Hill.
John Sulser, many years a resident of East Lynne, was almost an institution in that Cass County town. He had followed various lines of work, sawmilling, threshing, filing station and so on, and was well liked in the neighborhood where he so long he had lived.

(Note: On the funeral card for Mr. Sulser’s daughter, her married name is spelled Strickfaden.)
Henry Sulser, Natchez Territory

I'm trying to find more family members of George Selser (1856 PA - 1826 Jefferson Co. MS) who might have been in MS Territory at the same time. Henry might be part of the family since "Selser" was also spelled "Sulser". "Letters of Administration Book 1 (Sept. 30, 1803 - Apr 1, 1819)", p. 8, Adams Co. Court House, Natchez, MS, lists Letters of Administration being granted to David Johnson, 15 June 1803, to administer the estate of Henry Sulser. Does anyone know anything about this Henry? Thanks, Shirley

I am in possession of a deposition given by a Mrs. SULSER of Gadsden AL about 1897-98. She stated that she had lived in Gadsden 25 years. She had an elderly boarder /landlord named TOM CANSLER, in whose welfare she took a great deal of interest. I am trying to find more information on Tom Cansler and any family he had in the area. He went to Texas 1891-1893 but returned to Gadsden before he died April 15 1897 according to Mrs. Sulser's testimony. Other surnames mentioned: Gadsden lawyers Burnett & P.E. Culli(?), and Mrs E.C. GOODRICH of Palestine Texas. Any information on Mrs. SULSER (husband's given name?) or TOM CANSLER appreciated. I understand Mr. Cansler's mother was a HENDERSON from Pickens Co., SC

This Mrs. Sulser sure sounds like Ellen C. Porter Sulser, b. 11-15-1845 GA d. 8-22-1917 in Gadsden, AL. Wife of Samuel Sulser b. 8-22-1827 in VA d. 10-12-1912 in Gadsden, AL. He (Samuel) is the son of Ambrose Sulser/Sulcer/Selsor and Luela Gibson. I descend from Samuel's brother James Sulser/Sulcer b. VA. I am not familiar with Tom Cansler. From the name, time and place I'm fairly sure this is correct.
