My Great Great grandparents were a Mark that Married a Lydia Jackson, that married back in 1880. Both born in Georgia, Mark was a Minister and Farmer and Lydia was a Nurse - somewhere in between they found time to give birth to 15 children.
Mark Sumlin was born to Charles and Martha Wilson Sumlin. One being my great grandmother Erma Sumlin.

I am looking for a person born in 1985 or 1986. He was born to Linda Sumlin in New York. I was told that his name was Ronald or Raheem. I am not sure what happened to him after he was born. I know that this is not much info, but it is all I have right now. If anybody knows anything, let me know.

I tend to think that it's just my grandma's side of the family that's anti-social. My mom and I haven't heard from anybody in Louisiana since my dad died. He was the link to communication.

You can email me at my personal email address:
sonia-89@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for the response. I'm Mary Tims. I'm the youngest daughter of aunt base. I also have a twin brother named Gary. Yea, I heard Jr. and Marie was home but I didn't get to see them. I didn't know that auntie's family was so separated. I'm glad to say that our family is not. We really do a good job of staying in touch. We often have dinners and get-togethers. That is sooo important.
I know that my aunt Marie and Uncle Jr. has been there for a class reunion. I've been to St. Luke unfortunately many times, and I took video when grandma Norton was buried. That's the last time I've been down there. It's just not the same and the family is sooo separated.

I occasionally talk to Jimmie Sumlin...well we email each other. I haven't spoken to him in a while. What is your name? It's been awhile since I've seen any of aunt Base's children. I do have photos that dad took and video, so I may remember who you are. I'm A.J.'s youngest daughter.

Yes, we are related. I'm the neice of Erma Norton. My mother is Ola (Sumlin) Grisby. They call her Base. She is the last of the ten children of John and Mittie Sumlin. You just missed a small gathering at St. Luke Church on June 28th. It was set to visit the graveside of our relatives. But it was just too hot to stay outside very long. We took a view pics. St. Luke is located in Arcadia, LA.

I'm so excited to hear that you are interested in the family history. Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Your Cuz
I haven't been on this website in a long time, but I finally got the urge to try to find out more about my great grandparents. My dad had passed away, and he didn't know anyone else. I remember my dad always talking about Monroe, Louisiana, and I know I have people in that area. Most of them preside in Homer, & Haynesville. All of my elders are buried at St. Lukes Cementary...I was trying to find out the city, and I think it's Claiborne, LA, but I'm not finding out very much right now.

I am also searching for a Joseph Sumlin--Raleigh, NC/Wake County, NC. He is my great-grandfather. My great grandmother's name was "Lou" but I do not know maiden name. My grandmother, Ella Ann Sumlin (married a Walthall) was
born in NC in 1870. Had older siblings known as Mattie Sumlin, Isaac Sumlin and Joanne Sumlin. Joanne died at a very young age. In the 1900's my grandmother, Ella, made a move to Richmond, VA. In the move with her were my grand-grandmother, Lou, and her brother, Isaac. The other
item I do know is that my grandmother, ella, being the youngest "never did see her father, Joseph." So, something happened to him before she was born. Do we connect? Would
like to hear from you. Rosetta Harris - harrisrw@jmu.edu

I have heard so many stories about our family history and all of the other family members I have spoken with and met in the past shared similar or the exact stories with me. I get goose bumbs with all the history that this family shares and the racial lines that it has crossed - along with the impact this family has made in the shaping of American and world history leaves me breathless. I am from Memphis,Tennesee and have traveled extensively and each city or state I am in at that time I search the name of the Sumlin's that might be there and have found them to be receptive and talkative about our family and that anyone with the names of Summerlin,Sumlin,Sumlar,Sumling are all related and this was not the only part that amazed me it was the different racial and economic diversity that astounded me. I will continue my research of this family and hope that you would do the same and I pray in time that are path shall meet.

Love
Jay W. sumlin

Sumlin / Houston Family

I'm just beginning to start my search. I'm trying to find out family history on my dad side of the family. My grandmother died last year 2002. Her name was Erma S. Norton, but her surname was Sumlin. She was born in Arcadia/Haynesville, Louisiana I think. My grandmother had 6 girls and 2 boys. Her husband was Turner Lee Norton. My paternal grandfather was John Abbott from Kansas.

My grandma's parents were Mittie (Houston) and John Sumlin, Sr. and together they had 7 girls and 4 boys. I think one of them was from Oklahoma, but my dad don't remember, but I think it was my grandmother. I know she has Native American relatives because she looked Native American. I can't remember all of their names, but some of the girls moved to Detroit, Mich. (Ida, Verma Mae, Madgie). Elnora lived in Crossette, Ark. The boys all lived in Louisiana.

So if anyone has any info, please email me.

Hello anyone looking for relatives of the Sumlins. My grandfather is from Birmingham, AL. He left in the 1950's, to live in Dayton, OH. His name is Johnnie Sumlin. He passed away in 1998. His mother's name is Hattie Sumlin. He had brothers and one sister. But when I was young, I was told that a lot of his siblings were separated. There may have been as many as 11 sibliings. If anyone believes that we are related, get in touch with me. This is very important to me. I am sure this is very important to you as well, or you wouldn't be trying to locate family. My email address is: spivey31@yahoo. com. Thank you and good luck to all!

Sumlin family stories

My family is Smith/Sumlar and we have the Jesse James story but I always thought it was connected to my Smith family......does anyone out there have this story......Husband was going to out for something and wife asks him to bring her a can of snuff. He comes back 7 years later with the can of snuff. In the 7 years he married and started another family.

I have been told that this was my uncle Stafford Smith but I wonder if maybe it was my grandfather Florence Smith since some of his children were placed in the Harpst Home in Cedartown, Ga. and they were there for 7 years. My mother was one of his children who was in the orphanage.

We also have one where someone was sitting in their yard and struck from behind and killed. I read one tonight on the Sumlar, Smith, or one of the Alabama boards that is the same story with different names and a different weapon.

We also have the "indian chief" 6 or 7 generations ago and the "inventor" of the spitball.

If you have these stories and also have Smith, Sumlar or variations, Hilburn names and or Polk and Floyd Co., Ga. relatives....I would love to hear from you to see if maybe we are related.
Margaret....iahcoexfa@aol.com
