Genealogy Research is conducted in many ways, one of which is DNA. How are we all related? Where did we come from? I have started two DNA Projects via The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF). Project #1 is for surnames Summerville, Burkhalter, and Mustin (and variant spellings) which encompasses my maternal grand-father's line. Project #2 is for surnames Washington, DeLoach, and Sturdivant (and variant spellings) which encompasses my maternal grand-mother's line. I invite you to read the information below and consider participating in this technologically extraodrinary project.

The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) has built the world's foremost collection of mitochondrial DNA data and corresponding genealogies.

Both men and women have mtDNA, which they inherit from their mothers, who in turn, inherit their mtDNA from their mothers. This makes mtDNA an excellent tool for maternal line research.

Searching the mtDatabase allows us to find cousins who may be connected across generations and around the world.

Other individuals with exact matches may share a common ancestor, though it can be difficult to determine how far in the past that common ancestor may have lived without the genealogical information found in pedigree charts.

If you have not participated in the SMGF project, I invite you to add your DNA results and pedigree chart to the Sorenson Database by Requesting a Participation Kit.

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation Participation Kit . The results of that test will be entered into the Sorenson Database where it can be matched against other participants. The database can be searched, and if matches are found, the person's 4 generation ancestry can be matched with yours. All SMGF participants will be able to redeem their one-time coupon for either:

A discounted 26-marker Y-chromosome Paternal Line Analysis for $95 USD OR
A discounted mtDNA Maternal Line Analysis for $95 USD
Some participants may be satisfied with the results from Phase 1 and not wish to enter Phase 2.

The second phase is done through Relative Genetics. At any time, you can order the free test kit from Relative Genetics:

Relative Genetics Test Kit

Once you have received the coupon from SMGF, you can use it to order the type of test you wish from Relative Genetics. Note - the coupon is only good for the discounted 26-marker Y-chromosome Paternal Line Analysis, or the discounted mtDNA Maternal Line Analysis. If you wish, you can order the 43-marker test for $195, or you can later upgrade the 26-marker test to 43 markers for $75. The extra benefit of having a 43-marker test can be seen from the chart at:

Participation

All members of the Summerville, Washington, DeLoach, Burkhalter, Mustin, and Sturdivant (and variant spellings) family are encouraged to participate.

Confidentiality

Only the participant and the Project Coordinator will know the results of the test, unless the participant agrees to share the information on the Release Form.
