Hi, my grandfather Joe was born in pittsburgh in 1894,
he had a sister Margareth, fathers name Patrick, mothers
name Bridget. They returned to Co. Mayo, West of Ireland
around 1900. Most spelt their name with an O, very few
spelt it with a U, which is why your thread caught my
eye. Have you anymore info, contact me @sean@dublinmotoring.com if you wish.

Thanks for the info. I had since found much more info on Samuel and Agnes. How are you related? I am Samuel's great grandaughter. He came to Michigan and married Mary J but I am not sure if he divorced Agnes or what. I have found an Agnes buried in Huron County, Michigan in the same cemetery as Samuel. He married Mary J Cass before the death date of this Agnes. Any info is appreciated.

Hello,

My name is Joyce Summerville McDaniel and my dad, Willie Summerville, was born in Aliceville, AL, Pickens County. His father was Enoch Summerville whose father was Sam Summerville. My grandfather had a brother, James Summerville, who was the first child born to Sam Summerville who may have been born around 1879. James Somerville (this was the spelling in the 1880 census) was one year old at that time. He disappeared from the family in approximately 1917 when the family relocated to Arkansas. There may or may not be a connection here. I'm always interested when someone is looking for the Summerville Family out of Pickens County.

He was born in Scotland around 1837.He was married to Mary J.(born around 1868 in Canada)and children were Frederick and Frank (twins) and Bessie. He may have been previously married to an Agnes Darling in 1871 in Canada although I cannot verify that he is the same person.

Summervilles in Pennsylvania

I am looking for any relations to James (b. 1812) and Nancy (Caldwell, b. 1819) Summerville in Pennsylvania. I believe they had twelve children. Nancy was born in Ireland but James is a native of New Jersey. The 1850 and 1860 censuses have the family in Eldred, Jefferson County, PA, but I know at one time they were in Brookville, PA. One of James and Nancy's daughters, Martha, married Airwine James Hubbard (my great-great-grandparents). Thank you!

DNA Surname Project

Genealogy Research is conducted in many ways, one of which is DNA. How are we all related? Where did we come from? I have started two DNA Projects via The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF). Project #1 is for surnames Summerville, Burkhalter, and Mustin (and variant spellings) which encompasses my maternal grand-father's line. Project #2 is for surnames Washington, DeLoach, and Sturdivant (and variant spellings) which encompasses my maternal grand-mother's line. I invite you to read the information below and consider participating in this technologically extraodrinary project.

The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) has built the world's foremost collection of mitochondrial DNA data and corresponding genealogies.

Both men and women have mtDNA, which they inherit from their mothers, who in turn, inherit their mtDNA from their mothers. This makes mtDNA an excellent tool for maternal line research.

Searching the mtDatabase allows us to find cousins who may be connected across generations and around the world.

Other individuals with exact matches may share a common ancestor, though it can be difficult to determine how far in the past that common ancestor may have lived without the genealogical information found in pedigree charts.

If you have not participated in the SMGF project, I invite you to add your DNA results and pedigree chart to the Sorenson Database by Requesting a Participation Kit.

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation Participation Kit . The results of that test will be entered into the Sorenson Database where it can be matched against other participants. The database can be searched, and if matches are found, the person's 4 generation ancestry can be matched with yours. All SMGF participants will be able to redeem their one-time coupon for either:

A discounted 26-marker Y-chromosome Paternal Line Analysis for $95 USD OR
A discounted mtDNA Maternal Line Analysis for $95 USD
Some participants may be satisfied with the results from Phase 1 and not wish to enter Phase 2.

The second phase is done through Relative Genetics. At any time, you can order the free test kit from Relative Genetics:

Relative Genetics Test Kit

Once you have received the coupon from SMGF, you can use it to order the type of test you wish from Relative Genetics. Note - the coupon is only good for the discounted 26-marker Y-chromosome Paternal Line Analysis, or the discounted mtDNA Maternal Line Analysis. If you wish, you can order the 43-marker test for $195, or you can later upgrade the 26-marker test to 43 markers for $75. The extra benefit of having a 43-marker test can be seen from the chart at:

Participation

All members of the Summerville, Washington, DeLoach, Burkhalter, Mustin, and Sturdivant (and variant spellings) family are encouraged to participate.

Confidentiality

Only the participant and the Project Coordinator will know the results of the test, unless the participant agrees to share the information on the Release Form.
Visit www.mdufer.com for information.
Matilda & James Summerville b:around 1820 in PA, moved to KY

I am related to Matilda Summerville b: about 1822 in Pennsylvania. I believe she had a brother, James b: 1818 in PA. Some notes mention being from Scotland, but I am not sure about that part. The 1850 Census has them in Jefferson County, Louisville, Kentucky with a Helen Summerville b: 1818 who may have been James' wife. Matilda married Michael Gore in 1851. If you have any information on her ancestors, please let me know.

My grandmother was Lucretia Summerville (daughter of Thaddeus son of John) so I have done some research on the family. This may be information that you already have but, here goes:

Josiah H. 7/17/1829 was the son of Joseph Summerville - TN 1797 and Nancy (?) - TN 1798 per the 1840 Graves Cty, KY Census and 1850 Calloway Cty, KY Census. The 1860 Calloway Cty, census shows only Nancy so I assumed Joseph may have died.

The siblings of Josiah I have found:
Milton -TN 1816-1861 married Evaline Lynch and was a well known trader, speculator and one time jailer in Graves Cty.
John - TN 1813- >1860 married Mary Brock (my GGGrandparents)
Philip Dixon-KY - 2/2/1842-2/7/1917 married Araminta Wingo
Sarah E. - KY 1848
Since there is a great number of years between children, there may be others but I have not found evidence of them.

The 1860 Calloway Census listed the following household members for Josiah and Eliza:
Ada I. 3 (b. 9/13/1856)
Josiah Buchanan (b. 10/17/1857)
Dewit C. 3
Thomas W. 1
Uriah W. (b. 3/30/1859)
Richard Copeland 15 probably Eliza's brother or nephew

Additional information I have on children:
Lena Captola "Tola" KY - 6/29/1861-5/31/1923 Killen TX. married Millard Miles Gough
Austin DeBo

Eliza Copeland is the daughter of Amos Copeland and Mary Short and sister of John Randolph Short who went to Parker Cty., TX.

Another person interested in Josiah Summerville is Steve@Smoot.com. He is descended from Lena Capola "Tola" Summerville, I believe. He also has a web site on Familytreemaker.com/users/s/m/o/Steve-L-Smoot/
I believe the Mary and John you were referring to in your query were my great-great-grandparents Mary Brock (born in TN around 1814 and died after 1860) and John Summerville (born in TN around 1813 and died after 1860). This information I received from Census Records. They were married 6/15/1843 in Arkansas Cty, AR.

There were three siblings that I have found William H. 1844 -<1911, Oscar F. 3/9/1849-2/27/1920 (married a woman named America and had a son named Clyde) and Thaddeus 7/11/1853-11/29/1937 (my great grandfather) who married Lucretia Williams around 1874. Thaddeus and Lucretia had 11 children and remained in the Mayfield area until their death.
I had not seen the additional children you mention F. H. (Hester) and Stella. Do you have any more information?

I am not certain if you are looking for "Slim" Summerville, the actor, but if you are, here is some information. George J. "Slim" Summerville was born in 1892 in Alb., NM, lived in Chatham, Ontario and Oklahoma and died following a stroke at age 54 - 1/5/46 in Laguana Beach, CA. He had a wife and son. He was a very tall, gangling, brown haired, big-nosed, sleepy eyed American comedy actor with a clown’s smile that made him look as if he never had any teeth and an unmistakeable slow, drawling voice – assets that set him up for a lifetime of countrified characterizations. He was one of the original Keystone Cops. After directing dozens of silent comedy shorts (1920-1929) and starring in some early sound frolics, he proved an amiable foil for such distinctively different scene stealers as ZaSu Pitts (they made nine films together) and Shirley Temple. He began his film career in 1914 in A Rowboat Romance and made his last film in 1946, The Hoodlum Saint. One of his most memorable films was Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm in 1938. This information came from a reference book on 20th Century Actors from the Denver Public Library.

John Summerville Fleming County Kentucky 1829

History of Fleming County, Kentucky
The First One Hundred years 1780-1880
Robert S. Cotterill
unpublished manuscript
Flemingsburg Public Library KG 976.956

...undoubtedly the trial which most stirred the county was that of Daniel McLaughlin for the killing of his father-in-law, John Somerville. McLaughlin was a shoemaker living in Elizaville. His wife, Catherine, because of marital differences, had left him and had returned to her father's home near Fleming Creek. In March, 1829,McLaughlin was put under a bond of fifty dollars by the county court to keep the peace toward her for five years. There was evidently bitter feeling between McLaughlin and his wife's family that led to fighting for in June 1829, McLaughlin charged John Somerville and his son Alexander with assault and battery and won a judgment for twenty-five dollars. In September 1829, the court put the two Somervilles under bond of $100 each to keep the peace toward McLaughlin. Sometime in September McLaughlin received word from his wife that if he would come for her at her father's home she would return with him to Elizaville. McLaughlin went taking with him William and John, slaves of John Cochran, and Big Sam, the slave of James Lewis. When he reached the Somerville home he was set upon by the Somervil1es, knocked down, and in the resulting affray Big Sam threw a stone at John Somerville which hit him on the head-a blow from which he died September 28. The grand jury indicted McLaughlin and the three slaves for murder and the case came to trial in October, 1829 at another special term of the circuit court. McLaughlin pleaded not guilty and R. D, Stockton and W. H. Taylor
were assigned as his consels. On October 20 he was found guilty, and Judge Roper, overruling a motion for a new trial, sentenced him to be hanged December 11, 1829. On that day at ten minutes before one p.m. on a gallows near the town branch about 1/2 mile from Flemingsburg he was hanged by Deputy Sheriff J. H. Botts-the first legal execution in the history of the county. The slaves were tried and John (whose release Cochran whad obtained on $400 bail) was found not guilty. Samuel was found guilty of murder, William of involuntary manslaughter with a recommendation that they be pardoned by the governer. Judge Roper sentenced them to be hanged December 19, but before the date arrived the governor pardoned them. (8)

Footnote 8 pg 205
Details of this celebrated trial are given in the depositions of H. C. Berry, and Samuel Henry Jones, Dickey Collection. The official record is in the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court at Flemingsburg. See also The Fleming Gazette, May 11, 1926. Catherine Somerville married Robert Scott September 20, 1820. After Scott's death she married McLaughlin September 24, 1827. The Somervilles lived on the old buffalo road on what is now the Powell tarm near Hilltop. Part of the stone house is still standing as a part of a barn. The slave William was valued at $450 and Big Sam at $500. Before his execution McLaughlin wrote a confession which is in the Clerk's office at Flemingsburg. William was pardoned December 7 and Samuel a week later. John Cochran and Eliza Lamarr were suspected of complicity but were released after an examining trial before W. D. Lee.

Hello Monica,

I tried to e-mail you, but my message came back as undeliverable.

You and I are related (albeit, distantly). I have an extensive file on the descendants of James Simmeral/Summerville, who came to the United States in 1790. James had a son name John who had a son named Joseph who was the father of your Annie.

Here is the portion of the information I have that contains your side of the family:

(10) Anne Laura Summerville (5/13/1879 - 12/11/1944)
- m. John F. Allen (2/11/1876 - 5/1946)
(a) Frank Wendell Allen (b. 10/20/1902)
(b) Marion Allen (b. 9/06/1904)
(c) Charles Edgar Allen (b. 6/19/1906)
(d) Helen Ruth Allen (b. 4/30/1908)
(e) Roy Alfred Allen (b. 6/11/1910)
(f) Jack Allen (b. 8/27/1913)
(g) Ralph Allen (b. 4/28/1915)
(h) Mary Jane Allen (b. 7/21/1917)
(i) Harry Allen (b. 5/15/1919)

Here's how we're related: I'm descended from James Simmeral/Summerville's oldest daughter Jane Summerville, who married David Martin. They lived in the Rimersburg, Pennsylvania area, where many of our ancestors lived. David Martin was my great-great-great-grandfather.

Regards,
Eric Martin

Hello There Cousin!

It looks as though we have a common link. James Marion Kuykendall is my Great Great Grandfather, and his son James Marion Jr., was my Great Grandfather. Email me, we can compare listings.

I saw a listing on One World Tree - but it is listed incorrectly as Kuyhendall not Kuykendall - but Eliza and james are both showing as married in the tree.

I look forward to connecting with you!

Summervilles of Oswego County, Central New York

William Summerville son of Edward and Lovina Draper settled in Granby, Oswego, New York. He married Sarah Fowler and they had 8 children. One of which was Ella Summerville. I believe she married Charles Williams. I have her family photo album. There is a picture of her along with 68 pictures of the Summerville and Williams families. A lot of the Williams pictures were taken in Herkimer, Gloversville, and Little Falls all of NY State. If you think you could identify any of these people, it would be a great help. Please email me igorneige@hotmail.com, these pics are scanned in, ready to be sent to you! All pics were taken before 1910. Thanks in advance for your help.
