Over this past summer, I actually looked up this census listing and found what I originally thought was Linda, was actually listed as "Sinda Summit" in the 1870 Catawba NC Census. Also listed listed that same year all in Caldwell Township, Catawba County, as heads of Household, are Paulina Summit, Christena Summit, and John Summit. The census indicated that the population that year in Caldwell Township was 1,101. Not a big bustling area. Sinda Summit is listed living as a housekeeper for a John F Rabb. I would assume that she was born a slave, and like many slaves, after emancipation stayed and worked for their former masters. But that is a guess. She would have been very young at the end of the Civil War.
Then I came across Sinda marrying John Lee Wilson in Dec 1875 in Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. This is, in all likelihood, the same person. In the 1870 census she is listed as fourteen and then five years later as a black 18-year-old female. I copied the marriage listing below for you here: "Wilson, John Lee (20) (Miles G Emeline); Summit, Lucinda (18); black; M=Dec. 1875; S. Carter at Snow Hill, Newton; A Abernethy, Pinkney Hull, Luke Phillips. 1-305." Source: "Catawba County North Carolina Marriages 1842(50) - 1880 Volume 1" by Elizabeth Bray Sherrill, RG; Heritage Books, Inc.
This is about all I have on Lucinda "Sinda" Summit. Does anyone else have anything else on this individual?
LUCINDA1 Summit was born Abt. 1857 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She married JOHN LEE Wilson December 1875 in South Carter at Snow Hill, Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina, son of Miles Wilson and EMELLINE. He was born Abt. 1855.
