Re: john bird sumner, Archbishop of Canterbury

My name is Alexandra Mary Sumner, I am one of three daughters of Geoffrey Edmund Sumner, 1908-1989,son of Edmund Sumner and Kathleen Mary Brook. My sisters names are Victoria Naylor (nee Sumner)1940-, Charlotte Elizabeth Smith (nee Sumner) 1952-. I know I am related to John Bird Sumner whose brother was Charles Richard Sumner, Archbishop of Winchester. I think his son, George Henry Sumner, married Mary Heywood and she (Mary Sumner 1828-1921) founded the Mothers' Union. I am trying to fill in the missing links between John Bird and my father to create a family tree. I would also like to go back further. Any information gratefully received. Many thanks

Re: Daniel Sumner, b.1816 Hamburg, NY

I am going to take a stab at this. I am researching my Stevens line. Peter Stevens Jr. and his descendants lived and moved on from Wells, Rutland, Vermont. According to Wells, Vermont 200 Years by Grace E Pember Wood Lucina was the daughter of Daniel and Delilah Reynolds Sumner. Among other children of Daniel and Delilah Sumner was a son, Daniel.

Delilah died abt 1812 and Daniel Sr. married Caroline Graves. What I was trying to accomplish was to find John and/or Lucina living with in-laws or children in 1850 census. Other trees indicate both died prior to 1850.

I then looked into the Sumner line hoping to find a Stevens living amongst a Sumner family...still no luck.

However, the 1830 census records Show a John Stevens of about the same age range living in Boston, Erie County New York and on the same page is Daniel Sumner aged 60-70 and a couple of families of Graves surname.

My Stevens research is extensive and other cousins of John Stevens passed through Erie County, then into Wisconsin, Iowa, etc. Although I am convinced this is my John Stevens I have no information as of late of his children. The 1830 census indicates there were young family members living in the household which could have been children or grandchildren.

Hope this helps.

Any questions I can be contacted at:

Scott Barker
scott@fiske-bigelow.com
www.fiske-bigelow.com

Re: Joshua SUMNER (1822-1900s) of Carroll Co VA - problems with tombstone interpretation

Someone has contacted me assuring me that there is a marriage recording showing that the woman who married Andrew Jackson CARRICO did so as Sarah SUMNER. Therefore, Joshua SUMNER's second wife was, indeed, Sarah Elizabeth (nee EDWARDS) EDWARDS. This changes the address of Joshua's family group sheet to:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/S/SumnerJoshua-SarahDavis-Sa...

Presumably, then, the woman in the grave next to Joshua would be Joshua's first wife, Sarah (nee DAVIS) SUMNER because his second wife would have been buried as Sarah CARRICO.

Joshua SUMNER (1822-1900s) of Carroll Co VA - problems with tombstone interpretation

I would like to call your attention to an unfortunate situation with regard to the tombstone readings of Carroll County, Virginia, as submitted to the archives of USGenWeb. The problem is that the file in the archive is not a verbatim reading of the stones, but a heavily annotated version of them. The compiler has added parents and spouses to the readings, with no indication that this is added information. The reason it's so unfortunate is that he's made some serious errors. For example, these two stones:

0903 SUMNER, Joshua No Dates
F: William Sumner
M: Catherine (Edwards) Sumner
W: Sarah E (Edwards) Edwards

0904 SUMNER, Sarah E ?Sallie? (Edwards) No Dates
F: Elisha Edwards
M: Agnes A Edwards
H: 1st James Curren Edwards
2nd Joshua Sumner

The 1900 census shows Joshua born in Jan 1822, but the Joshua SUMNER who was son of William SUMNER & Catherine EDWARDS is said to have been born 23 Aug 1821. While it's not uncommon for the census to be in error as to the year of birth, it's usually correct as to the month. So, were these really Joshua's parents?

Joshua married twice, first ca. 1943 to Sarah DAVIS and second ca. 1892 to Mrs. Sarah L. (nee ?) EDWARDS, whose middle intial may be the first letter of her maiden name, not her middle name, so either woman could be "Sarah E."

Joshua is found with his first wife in the 1850 thru 1880 censuses, then appears in the 1900 census with his second wife. Joshua SUMNER is not found in the 1910 census, so he presumably died before 1910. Sarah SUMNER is not found in 1910, either, so either she died, too, or she remarried.

Without dates, there is no obvious way to tell whether the Sarah E. buried next to Joshua is his first wife or his second. It matters which because, if it's his second wife, she cannot be the woman who married James Curren EDWARDS because that woman married last ca. 1908 to Andrew Jackson CARRICO and died after 1910 as Sarah *CARRICO*. So, the Sarah buried next to Joshua has to be either Sarah (DAVIS) SUMNER or Sarah (__?__) SUMNER. She *cannot* be Sarah (EDWARDS) EDWARDS CARRICO, daughter of Elisha & Agnes (COCHRAN) EDWARDS.

For more details, please see this family group sheet at my web site:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/S/SumnerJoshua-SarahDavis-Sa...

The bottom line here is the lesson that all original records, including the information recorded on tombstones, should be extracted and reported *verbatim*, with nothing changed and nothing added. Any annotations to the reading of the record should be clearly labeled as such.

She remarried at least once to Alexander Kirkland in Winneshiek Co., Iowa. She is buried in Helgen Cemetery, Dexter Twp., Codington Co., SD near her son Levi Eldridge and several other relatives.

I have additional information available regarding Jabez's parents, and his siblings Levi Eldridge, Susan, and Fannie.

Thanks for the good information. I live in Southern California, so I appreciate it. I've only been researching my genealogy a little over a year. The Shadden family were considered early pioneers in both Oregon and California. Thomas Jefferson Shadden, his wife Martha, and their daughter Eliza are listed on the Native Daughters of the Golden West Pioneer Roster. I've noticed that the Sumner last name has been spelled in many variations (Sumners, Summers, Sommers, also without the "s" on the end), which makes unraveling it all challenging at times. I've found Martha's father, Owen Sumners, and brother, Owen Sumners, Jr. and sister Miriam Payne (also spelled Paine) noted on Oregon Trail lists...but I haven't been able to verify if her mother, Lucy, came out. Thanks again.

I hope I haven't already bugged you about this question! I wonder if you have any of the following names in your Sumner genealogies please? Samuel Sumner was born about 1786 in North Carolina, but I don't know the county. I think it's near Rockingham and Orange Counties. It could be Rowan County because of family connections. He married Sarah Jane Clark who was born about 1790 in NC. Their children in Samuel's 1863 Linn Co., Missouri will were Nancy Sumner McClintock b. Abt. 1809 NC, Joseph J. b. Abt. 1811 NC, Elijah C. b. Abt. 1813 NC, Mary Sumner Moore b. Abt. 1826 KY or IN, Samuel b. Abt. 1829 IN, and Clark b. Abt. 1832 IN. I believe they had as many as 10 kids total.

If you look online in the index for the Oregon State Archives, you can find all sorts of state and county records for various surnames and so forth.
I am looking for any information about Daniel Sumner who was born 1816 in Hamburg, NY. He married Lucy Ann Moody, had numerous children, and by 1880 was living in Lac Qui Parle, MN. I think he died in Sioux City, IA about 1906 when living with his daughter Clara B. Sumner Spragg. His son, William H. settled in Des Moines, Iowa and lived there all of his adult life. William was my husband's great grandfather. I think Daniel's father was also named Daniel and moved from ? to Hamburg, NY in 1812. Any information on this Sumner line would be appreciated.

This a bit off subject - I saw another post for a Samuel Lemon, who died in Fleetwood. He was my gggrandfather. Would be good to exchange info and see how you fit into the story.

Regards

Phil
