I would love to have any Sumpter info you have. I am visited the family cemetery in Iowa last year. Elizabeth Sumpter married Solomon Slaughter, and the cemetery is the Slaughter Cemetery. The Slaughters were my great grandparents. The Sumpters land was next to theirs. Solomon and Eliz's son, Jack or John was my Grandfather. The cemetery is on the old homeplace of my great great grandparents. The county maintains it beautifully--very moving to visit there. I don't have any sumpter info but would like to have more. I have a wonderful picture of solomon and eliz with their 11 sons and 1 daughter. Nancy Slaughter Sullivan

Thank you for this. Bluford's last child Clarinda/Clara was born in 1872. I found his widow Mary Cotrell in the 1885 mound prarie census living with the younger children. Missing was John Lindsay Sumpter and Thomas Sumpter.

In this census is the John Rush family( I beleive his wife Mary Jane to be Sara Jane Sumpter, Bluford's sister but have yet to prove it and have yet to connect dots on many Sumpters for this time period.
Date: March 21, 1904
Location: Oregon
Paper: Oregonian
Page 4

ALEXANDER SUMPTER

ALBANY, Or. March 20

Alexander Sumpter, a veteran pioneer of Oregon, died at his home nine miles east of Albany last Friday, at the advanced age of 93 years.

Mr. Sumpter had spent a great part of his life in Linn county, and was known and respected by all. He was born in East Tennessee on the 10th day of May, 1810. When yet an infant, Alexander was taken to Kentucky by his parents, and received his early education there. During the gold fever of 1849 he came west to California by ox team. Soon after, however, he returned to St. Louis, where he married Miss Nancy Prather. In 1853 Alexander Sumpter, with his wife, came to Oregon and located in the Willamette Valley, near the present site of Albany, where he has since resided.

Alexander Sumpter has a remarkable record. At the time of his death he had 278 descendants. These were divided into 13 children, 86 grandchildren, 162 great grandchildren and 17 great-great grandchildren.

I am not related. I am posting for research purposes.
Eellitta

I think we have a match. My John E. Sumpter married Martha Elizabeth Gibson and they had a son James Hiram Sumpter b: 1861 in Tarrant Co., TX. They also had a daughter, Henrietta Sumpter, b:1857 who married my Gr-Gr-Grandfather, William Oscar Covington.

John E. and Martha died early and left John H. and Henrietta to be raised by Martha's parents, McNairy and Sarah Gibson

I don't have anything on parents or siblings of John E.
Re: SUMPTER, Jesse

It's an interesting coincidence that you decided to ask about Jesse Sumpter now. There has indeed been a recent breakthrough regarding Jesse Sumpter's ancestry.

Since there doesn't seem to be any documentation regarding Jesse Sumpter's parentage, some family researchers decided to try out the DNA approach. The result was that a paternal descendant of Jesse Sumpter matched on 27/30 markers with a descendant of William Sumter (1731 Hanover County, VA-ca 1819 Burke County, NC). William Sumter has long been the "best guess" among family researchers as the father of Jesse Sumpter, due to his being in Burke County at the right time, and the fact that he is documented as having several children with a second wife, but the names of the wife and children are unknown (and, Jesse is the right age to have been born to a second wife of William).

Admittedly, this doesn't prove that Jesse is a son of William, but it does prove that they are related. In fact, a 27/30 match is a bit low for two people who are only 6 or 7 generations from their common ancestor; an acceptable range would be somewhere between 27-30 out of 30. So, we can more or less say that Jesse Sumpter is either the son of William Sumter, or the descendant of an ancestor of William Sumter. But William Sumter is still the best guess for Jesse's father.

Incidentally, William Sumter was a Revolutionary War captain, and the brother of THE Thomas Sumter, after whom Fort Sumter was named.

See the DNA project here: http://groups.ancestry.com/site/49452004/public/ (registration required)

I am a descendant of Jesse through his son William Patterson, and through William Patterson's son William Hamilton.

Any Sumpter or Sumter descendant is welcome to join the Sumpter DNA Group without participating in the DNA testing program. Also, there is no requirement to have the Sumpter or Sumter surname to join the group. Joining the Sumpter DNA Group on Ancestry.com is free of charge requiring only that you establish a Username and Password which you probably already have if you have posted any message on Ancestry's Message Boards. To join the group, go the the following link and request membership: http://groups.ancestry.com/site/49452004/public/

If you have a surname other than Sumpter or variation thereof, hopefully a male relative with the Sumpter surname can be convinced to participate in a Y-chromosome DNA test which can be used as represent your Sumpter ancestor. My earliest known ancestor is Jeptha Sumpter, b. 1806 VA and I working with a Sumpter cousin and an uncle to participate in the DNA test to represent my Sumpter ancestral line. A DNA test can be requested at the following link: http://dna.ancestry.com/selectTest.aspx

Jim Young
A Sumpter DNA Group (Y-Chromosome) has been established at 'Ancestry.com' for surnames: Sumpter and Sumter. http://groups.ancestry.com/site/49452004/public/

Do my DNA results have to be from Ancestry.com to join a group?

No. You can always enter your 3rd party DNA results into the DNA system, free of charge. Your DNA results will be distinguished from Ancestry.com's DNA results by an asterisk to indicate the results have been manually entered. But for the purposes of comparing DNA either as a group or with other participants, all DNA results are treated equally.

Information on DNA testing at Ancestry.com can be viewed at: http://dna.ancestry.com/selectTest.aspx

Jim Young

I think that you are one of the keys that I am looking for. I am looking for the family of George W. Sumpter who married Frona Bell Daniel. I think that their childred were Marietta, Ernest, Jesse, Sarah, George, Grace, and Linnie. Is this your family? I am related to the Daniel family. My grandmother Lillie Florence Bates was from Monticello.
Russ

John Robert Sum(p)ter

This is part question part rant. Trying to get this line of Sumpters straight and am not having a lot of luck. Depending on what you read, John married Annie Alexander, her dob is listed many places as 1774 and the marriage date is 1785 -- so she was all of 11 when she married? I think not. Then we got to the next generation, Thomas, Robert and, depending on what you read, either John Robert who married Sarah Amelia Miller, or John Washington. Anybody have any good info on what is correct? To make matters even more interesting tonight I did a search for Caroline Amanda who is listed several places as John Robert's oldest. I found a gravestone in Caldwell County NC for her with the inscription "Wife of A.E. HAIGLER / GRANDAUGHTER OF ALBERT JOHNSON MILLER" and I think, wow this must be right, her grandfather would have been a Miller -- except that people that have researched Sarah's family have Robert Miller as her father.

Part of me just wants to write this off, the other part finds it a really interesting mystery...

That must be my great-grandfather. My grandfather was Edward Randolph Sumpter from Tennessee? married to Ethel Holmes from Wisconsin. Mother told me that my great-grandfather had died of an illness when my grandfather Ed was young. I have always wondered about my great Aunt Mary Wade b/c they tell me that she was prematurely grey and artistic, like me. This is my daughters account, but I will be looking over the postings for your responses when I can.

I was born in Monticello, but moved to Ohio at a very early age and I am trying to find my heritage. Joseph and Rebecca were my ggg-grandparents. I can't get out much but do have a lot of research materials in which to look.
Nora

I can see through other messages that there may well be links to the USA...Wondering if anything here rings any bells?

Regards

Chrissie
