SUMTER, Thomas. 1734-1832. Continental officer (Col.), militia officer (Brig. Gen.), storekeeper, statesman, b. near Charlottesville, Va.
Settled in South Carolina, 1765; fought as Continental officer in Georgia and Florida, resigning in 1778; became partisan commander, 1780; noted for victories at Williamson's Plantations, S.C., 6 August 1780; defeated by Tarleton at Fishing Creek, S.C., 18 August 1780; member, U.S. House of Representatives, 1789-1793, 1797-1801; member, U.S. Senate, 1801-1810; last surviving general of the Revolution.
