Sorry if this has been beaten to death previously, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for in the archives.

Do anyone have any detailed information on the family of Mary Cantey. It’s quite firm that she was previously married to William Jamison who died about 1766, that she married General Thomas Sumter about 1867, and that she died 24 Oct 1817. Her date of birth and parents, however, are less certain. The biography of the General on the City of Sumter, SC webpage says that she was seven years his senior, making her born about 1727, but I’ve also seen other birth dates as early as 1723, and as late as the 1740’s.

My ex-wife’s grandmother’s maiden name was Sumpter, and she was descended from the General’s brother William.

Any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Christiansburg, VA., April 6. - Capt. John U. SUMTER, aged 73, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. A. MANNONI, here this morning. He was a Confederate veteran, and the oldest employe on the Norfolk and Western Railway at the time of his resignation to become secretary of the railroad commission. He later represented this county in the legislature.

Looking for distant relatives of Becks who were born in Louisiana and migrated to Camden, Alabama around 1866.

These brothers and sister were born around 1835-1850: Frank, July, Nelson, Elias, Jacob, Clem, and Susan. In Alabama census records, they are listed as colored, black, and mulatto.

July Beck, married Norma John a. 1873-1877.

Elias was married to an Emeline; children Eddy, Davis, Gabe, Sam and Allen.
Frank was a barber, married to Sarah ; children Bette, John and Margret.

Susan Beck, my great, great, great grandmother, married Joseph Sumter/Sumpter; children Charlie Sumpter and Katherine (Kate) Sumpter.

Kate Sumpter, my great-great grandmother married Peter Hardley, Sr. They lived and died in Camden, Al in Wilcox County.

Settled in South Carolina, 1765; fought as Continental officer in Georgia and Florida, resigning in 1778; became partisan commander, 1780; noted for victories at Williamson's Plantations, S.C., 6 August 1780; defeated by Tarleton at Fishing Creek, S.C., 18 August 1780; member, U.S. House of Representatives, 1789-1793, 1797-1801; member, U.S. Senate, 1801-1810; last surviving general of the Revolution.

I am not related to this person, I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "People & Events of the American Revolution" by Dupuy/Hammerman. R.R. Bowker Company, 1974. pg.410.

HELP! John Sumter/sumpter m. Elizabeth ? (maybe Davis) & Joel Sumpter m. Sylvia Buchanan.

My g-grandma was Etta Ann Sumpter. Her parents are listed as John Sumpter & Elizabeth (Davis) ?. John's parents as far as I have traced are Joel Sumter & Sylvia Buchanan I think that is who they are. It is what I have found anyway. After awhile we start to doubt what we find, because there are so many with the same name. There are not many Joel Sumter's though. I found an 1880 census for N.C. that lists John with his children: Penelten (m), John, Jane, & Etter (f). Also two wives listed as Mary & Sarah. I am now really confused. I did not think that they did that in N.C. back then, I mean the two wives thing. It might have been a typo. Etter/Etta was my ggrandma. Any and all help or info is greatly appreciated. Jo!!!

I am searching for descendents of Joseph Milton Sumter and Emma Tooley Albright. They were married 7 Jun 1902 at Atoka, OK (Indian Territory). the only know daughter was Bertie Lou. She married Charles Elmer Hartley in OKlahoma.

I did manage to trace ours back to Gen.Thomas Sumter.
I believe (without my notes), it was Albermarle co. VA where he married and they had a daughter, Patience Sumter who married John Dowell Sr.. | John Dowell Jr. married Anne Franklin and they had a daughter named Patience Dowell and other children - another daughter was Dorcas Dowell, and she and her husband John Dunlap III m. in 1802 were my 3rd Great Grandparents, thus making Thomas Sumter an x-gr grandfather of ours too.

(The Dowells lived next door to Peter Jefferson, the father of Thomas Jefferson. Ben Franklin probably knew John Dunlap I who was also a printer who printed the Declaration of Independence known as the Dunlap Broadsides.)

I haven't yet gone any deeper though with Sumter surname.

Hi here's some information which may be useful. My maternal grandmother Hazel(born Hager, Hagee) Chestnut is originally from Columbia, S.C. Her grandparents(maternal)were William and Hager(Sims) Sumter of Hopkins, S.C which I'm told is near Columbia. They had seven children Five girls and two boys:
Eugunia (grandmom's mother)Lee Columbia, SC (deceased)
Rachel Sims Hopkins
Jane Cade Columbia, SC
Julia Brown Columbia(deceased)
Bill (William possibly) Sumter
James (Sam) Sumter
I'm still in the process of jogging grandmom's memory on birthdates and death dates and location of her relatives. Grandmom was born around 1926 and her mother Eugenia was born on 14 June 1897. That's all the concrete info I have now. I'm trying to confirm the William Sumter I found in the SSDI is in fact her maternal grandfather.

I should have posted this message first.. I'm looking for family members of John Sumter Sr.. Most of his family is from Columbia SC.. John moved to Cleveland, OH and had added a "P" to his name and had dropped the Sr.. There should be 5 sisters in his family.. One of which we know moved to Patterson NJ.. In tracking the Dunlaps, a Ann Franklin married John Dunlap.
Ann's parents were Patience Sumter and a Benjamin Franklin.
Now somewhere, and of course can't find my notes now! ...
But her father or brother was Thomas ... and did I read
that Gen. Thomas Sumter's mother was a Patience Sumter? I'm
wondering if she's their daughter, and they named her for her mother.. or
she's a sister? My relative married John Dunlap in 1802 in VA and moved
and died in Ross co Ohio. Pleas write if you have any info.
Geez what a circle! Ben Franklin is even a harder circle!! Please write
if you have any info.

Ms Sumter, thanks for responding. Another Sumter also left me a message a few days a go and unfortunately I cannot find it in my e-mail. I hope you know that person as well. My email address is: Sumter7424@aol.com. I don't know what your Sumter (Sumpter) background is, but mine is both Afro-American and White. It is believed my great great grand father is some how related to General Thomas Sumter. I have not done much work on that line yet, but I have a name of a Sumter (distant relation) who has. When I first started researching the Sumters,I had a lot to learn, and still do, so I was looking at the message board, and found where I had replied to your message, my GG-grandfather, was John William Sumter,B. 1848, Cherokee, NC, he married Malinda Jane Stockton, 1850, of Barry MO.
Somehow, I think you were replying to someone much younger? But in any event, do any of these names sound familiar, if by any reason, they are related, that would be great, you see, I don't have any info past John William Sumter.

I too, am somehow related to the Sumters of SC. However, the most I can go back for sure is Tyra E. Sumter (B: 2 Jun 1832, P: Howard Co., Missouri, D: 5 Mar 1904), to William Sumter (B: 1802, P: ?, M: 30 Aug 1827) and Jane Rice (B: 1808).

I'm looking for the link to Gen. Thomas Sumter (of course!). Any help appreciated.

I am related to the Sumters (also Sumpter)of South Carolina. My great great grand mother had a brother whose name was John Sumter (possibly Sr) born approx. in the mid to late 1800s. He originated in Woodrow (Lee County...his descendents live in Bishopville, SC.(Lee County). The family was very large and still is.
