My family is related to the Surmans who previously farmed at Horspath, Oxford - between Headington and Wheatly. My grandmother was (I think) a Surman and there were a number of Surman sisters who did not marry. Over the years the land was sold off, and the last sister died about 20 years ago at which time the house and remaining land was sold off and distributed to us - including some Richardsons who live in Vancouver, Canada.
At the time when she died the house still had no running water, drainage or electricity. Not sure if this connects with your branch of the family, but let me know.
