Louise C. (Tyke) Surman, 91,
of Munhall, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008. Beloved wife of the late James J. Surman; daughter of the late Jack and Josephine Tyke; mother of James R. (Anna Jean), of Elizabeth Township, Charles W. (Peg), of New York, N.Y., Jane Surman, of Pittsburgh, Thomas R. (Gloria) of Pittsburgh; Anthony J. "Dutch" (Denise), of Pittsburgh, and Louise Marie (Neil) Carr, of West Mifflin; sister of Jack P. (Mary) Tyke, of North Huntingdon, Anthony R. (Lois) Tyke, of Florida, Geraldine (the late Joe) Kieler, of West Mifflin, and the late Francis Tyke, Josephine Kapp and Euginea Rose Tyke; also survived by 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Louise was an artist and was the past president of the AARP and the Steel Valley Art Guild. She was a piano teacher and conducted the Louise Tyke Orchestra of Pittsburgh, when she met her husband, Jim, who played the trumpet in the band, The Polish Aristocrats. Louise taught each of her children to appreciate the finer things in life, music and the visual arts, by teaching each to play an instrument and oil painting. She so loved music that, as a teenager, she carried her cello on two street cars from Lincoln Place to Taylor Alderdice High School in Pittsburgh each day. Louise always had a smile and a good word for any one she ever met. Louise and Jim had a retail appliance store in Homestead Park, Surman Electric. Louise was also a CCD teacher at St. Therese Church. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the SAVOLSKIS-WASIK-GLENN FUNERAL HOME INC., 3501 Main St., Munhall. Funeral Mass Wednesday, time later, in St. Therese Church.
