James & Elizabeth (Sutley) Johnston Family

Seeking information about the James and Elizabeth (Sutley) Johnston family of Canal Twp, Venango County, PA. James and Elizabeth were married 8 September 1814 in Canal Twp after Elizabeth’s first husband, Samuel Cousins, had died in August 1814.

It is reported that James and Elizabeth had five children, or John H. born 11 August 1815, Sarah R., Robert H., Harrison R., and Hugh. John H. moved to Warren, PA by 1841 and by 1850 had moved to Richland County, Ohio and to Lorain County, OH, by 1860. His family continued to live in Lorain County, OH, where this family is readily researched.

Another son, or Robert H. Johnston, was executor of his father’s estate after James died in 1846. I have found no other information about Robert before or after this date.

Please also note that I have found no information about the remaining three children or Sarah R., Harrison R. or Hugh.

Lastly, Elizabeth was most likely married a third time to an “unknown Graham” but it is not clear when she was married…presumably after James’ death in 1846, or after 1843 when Elizabeth filed for divorce a second time. As the Venango County court records are incomplete, it is not clear if a divorce was granted or not.
Re: Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins/Johnson) Graham???

Since I posted the information, I have since found more on James Johnston...note it is actually with a "t"...Elizabeth (Sutley) filed for divorce twice from James by her next friend, a legal requirement as women could not file, or Amos Brown. Amos married Mary Ann Cousins who would be daughter of Samuel Cousins..thus another tie to her probable mother or Elizabeth Sutley. James died in 1846 and I have his estate papers...and Elizabeth is no where to be found or listed. The problem with the Graham marriage is that there are several conflicting dates for the deed which identifies Elizabeth as married to a Graham. I have also acquired all of the James Johnstons deeds as well. If you wish, you can contact me at rnwhiting1313@yahoo.com.
Thanks.

Roger:
I just now saw your query regarding Elizabeth [Sutley/Cousins] a widow, wife of James Johnson.

I just looked at the book you referenced "History of the Western Reserve" and I think you've found something!

I have struggled with Elizabeth daughter of Christian & Eve Sutley, trying to find her husband GRAHAM, suggested to be Mayberry Graham. The birth date in the book is off 5 years for Elizabeth, but the fact the the day and month are the same 5 Apr 1791, seems to indicate to me she is the same person. I cannot find another Elizabeth that fits either. Here is her birth recorded in Berks Co. Church records....

From Microfilmed records of The Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, Berks Co. PA
Births: SETTELE, ELIZABETH, born 1785, Apr. 5; bpt. 1786, Aug. 20; Parents; Christian Settele & Eve; Sponsors: Michael Busch & Elizabeth.

Also, Elizabeth's sister Sarah married William COUSINS, Jr... correct? So it seems likely that sisters could have married brothers.

Thanks for posting the information.

Jerry Stout
Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins/Johnson) Graham???

Samuel Cousins, son of William and Mary Ann (?) Cousins of Sugarcreek Twp, Venango County, PA, was born c1781 and died after 10 August 1814, but before 1815, probably at Sugarcreek Twp, Venango County, PA. After extensive research, his wife’s name is unknown, but in accordance with the 1810 US census was born between 1784 and 1794. Samuel had four children, or Mary Ann, William, Samuel and Emeline.

Recently, I discovered that an “Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins), a widow” married a James Johnson c1815. Their son, John H. Johnson was born 11 August 1815 in Canal Twp, Venango County, Pa. James was born supposedly 6 May 1785 in Ireland and Elizabeth supposedly on 5 April 1791. James became an owner of 200 acres of land, location unknown. Four other children were supposedly born of this couple, or Sarah R., Robert H., Harrison R. and Hugh. (Please see History of the Western Reserve, Volume III, pages 1378-9, by Harriet Taylor Upton, published in 1910 by the Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, IL.)

Please note that there is an Elizabeth Sutley, born 5 April 1786 at Reading, Berks County, PA, d/o of Christian and Eve (Ermel) Sutley. The first and last information about Elizabeth is when she as “Elizabeth Graham” sells her right to her mother’s estate, or 100acres, to William and George Sutley on 20 November 1841.

So…did Elizabeth Sutley, d/o Christian Sutley Sr, marry (1) Samuel Cousins c1805? After Samuel’s death, did Elizabeth (Sutley) Cousins, a widow, marry James Johnson c1815? And lastly, did Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins) Johnson, perhaps a widow again, marry (3) an unknown Graham by 1841.

A last note is that Sarah Cousins, another daughter of Christian Sr., and sister to Elizabeth, married William Cousins, Jr., Samuel’s brother in 1809.
Roger:
I wonder if you've ever figured out who the parents were of Elizabeth wife of Sylvestor NOLTON? They are both shown as heirs of Eve ERMEL SUTLEY [deed abstract below]. Assumption has been made that she was a sister of the other two mention heirs who were daughter of MARY SUTLEY and John BROOKMIRE. However, Elizabeth's age on 1850 census indicates she was born about 1793, too old to have been a daughter of John Brookmire and Mary SUTLEY.

Venango Co. PA Deed Book P, pp. 542 - We, heirs and legal representatives of Eve SUTLEY, late of Canal Twp., Venango Co., quit claim to John HASTINGS, of the same place, 100 acres in Canal Twp., left to Eve Sutley by the Will of Christian SUTLEY, deceased. Signed: Mary Smith, Eveline Scott, Sylvester Nolton and Elizabeth NOLTON. Dated Dec. 7, 1855; recorded Dec. 7, 1858. Witnessed by F. Bunce, Jas. McCracken, James P. Kerr and D. K. Gurney.

Sources for Elizabeth & Sylvester NOLTON: 1850 Census Jefferson Co. PA-Barnett Twp.; In 1855 Venango Co. PA Deed, Elizabeth & Sylvester Nolton signed deed to John Hastings along with Eve Scott and Mary Smith ...[daughters of MARY SUTLEY and John BROOKMIRE, half-sisters to John HASTINGS]

Jerry

William Cousins, Jr. of Sugarcreek Twp - Children?

William Cousins, Jr., s/o William Sr & Mary Ann Cousins, of Sugarcreek Twp, Venango Co, PA, married 1 Aug 1809 Sarah Sutley, d/o of Christian & Eve (Ermel) Sutley. William & Sarah were later divorced 29 Aug 1829. William was remarried to a "Jane", surname unknown. William, Jr., died c 1834 by drowning, see tax & deed records. These same records along with census analysis indicate that William and Sarah had ten (10) children, eight of which are known: 1. Samuel; 2. John died between 1845-50; 3. William; 4. Nancy b 2 May 1809 md John Daily; 5. Sarah b 8 Feb 1814 md William Hughes; 6. Allen b c 1821 md Harriet (?); 7. Mary Ann b 12 May 1823 md Michael Sutley; and, 8. Harriet b 11 Feb 1825 md John Tuggle.

Does anyone know the names/families of the remaining two unknown children of William and Sarah?
I am looking for any information about the parents of Amanda
Sutley who was born about 1862 in Illinois (I think.) She was married to Andrew Jackson Carter (A.J. or Jackson) Aug. 31, 1879 in Christian County, Illinois. Amanda died April 8, 1885. As far as I know, Amanda had two children, Edward Oscar Carter who died as a child, and Bertha Alice Carter, born Dec. 14, 1882.

My great, great grandfather was Michael Sutley, the Civil War veteran who served in the Second Nebraska Cavalry, Company D - not Irvin Richard Sutley who was Michael's son. Michael Sutley at the time of his military service was a resident of Bellevue, Nebraska. A native of Pennsylvania, he enlisted on October 16,1862, was mustered into service on November 03,1862 - serving as a teamster until being discharged for disability in April 1863.

You didn't mention what area in Kansas your family members were resident. My grandfathet was Walter Wallace Sutley, d.o.b. 26 August 1882 (his birthday as I write this). His family homesteaded in Phillips County between Speed and Glade in 1872 if I remember correctly. Our branch of the Sutley family moved westward from Pennsylvania, to Ohio, then to Nebraska, before settling in northwestern Kansas. During the Civil War, my great, great grandfather, Irvin Richard Sutley, served in the Nebraska calvary and is buried at the family plot at the Marvin Cemetary in Glade, Kansas along with many other early family members. My grandfather Walter is buried at the Fairview cemetary in Phillipsburg, Kansas - which is the county seat of Phillips County.
