Sutton and Dudley DNA Testing

My earliest known ancestor is Thomas Sutton, and we've documented him back to Jefferson Co., MS, in 1818. We tested with FTDNA. Our haplogroup is I1. There are only 50 people in the Sutton FTDNA group. We matched at the 12 marker distance 1 with 2 families: Oliver Dudley born 1840 New Bern NC and James Sutton b. 1718 Lancashire UK. (by the way, Dudley and Sutton are the same thing because there were Suttons who were Earls of Dudley). A 12 marker match means we matched around 1,000 years ago, which isn't really helpful when trying to find Thomas' parents. Is anybody else on the message board doing DNA testing?
