The Suwalki archives are in the process of digitizing all of the birth, marriage and death records for the parishes, which were in the old Suwalki province.

Do you know the name of your family parish? I have seen all of the names you have listed: Urbanowicz Barszczewski/ska, Wiszniewicz/Wisniewicz and Szczesnowicz. The ending you have are incorrect on the ones ending in -wicz.

I'm from the Judicki or Yudicki and Cilwa/Enko line. I was told by a relative that Frank Judicki was told by the government that he needed to prove his ancestry and went back to Germany and brought back 5 generations of birth certificates. Where there are today is anyone's guess. The village of Suwalki was mostly Lutherans. It seems like most of the generation from the 1850-1870s emigrated to the US to western Mass, Penn. or Michigan.

There are many Wilhelmina Felgendrehers in our family, but the one I know anything about was born in the late 1800s, and came with her family to Pittsburgh, PA. I know another branch of the family went to Philadelphia. Is that near Jersey City?

Hi Everyone, this is a bit exciting for me. My g-g-grandfather, George Obereiner, was married to Wilhelmina Felgendreher. She was his first wife. Unfortunately, I have nothing more on her. Her husband George (Jerzy) married Augusta Rejter before 1852. Their first child was born about 1852.

My g-grandfather, August Gutzat (1860-1910), married Anna Obereiner (1862-1953) about 1880. Anna was George's 3rd child. They lived in Jersey City, NJ.

The Obereiner's and Gutzat's were from the Gryzbina are of Poland; Suwalki; and Russia. The borders for this small area were ever changing.

I continue to search for Gutzat family in the area. They are most elusive.

I look forward to hearing more about this family. We may be related.

My great grandmother is Alice Freelander (Augusta Felgendreher formerly). From Pittsburgh! Are you a relative of her brother Matthew Freelander?

My great grandfather was from the area his name was changer to Freelander from felgendreher by immigration in the USA. The settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the early 1900's. at the time the area was under Prussian rule and he spoke German.

They baptized their children as Lutherans in Michigan so most likely that was their religion. I found out that they
changed the name during the war because people were not happy with Germans. The original name was Freidruitz.

I've done research on the history and ethnicity of the Suwalki area. Grandfather was from Suwalki (ship manifest). Grandmother was not. His birth date on manifest is 1874/marriage license 1872. He arrived 1896. Both self-identified as Lithuanian and Catholic. He died 1917 mining accident and she said/wrote nothing. There are numerous spellings of the family surname which is now Skirbunt. Ship manifest had Skirbinta. They were married in Lithuanian Catholic Church where marriage license has Skirbanta. His death certificate indicates his father's name was Walter (Casimer?) and his mother was Mary Stibon.
I'm going after grand-dad and not grand-mom because the only info I have on her (Ursula Szulinskinte) is that she came from Podvorani, and near as I can tell this town no longer exists, and may have been vacated after the First World War.

Hi Pam,
The 1872 and 1873 indices to Evangelical Suwalki records do not have a birth for a Fred Fredericks. The records for 1870-1871 are not in Suwalki Archives. The date of birth you have may differ from what is found back in Poland - people often did not recall such things accurately.
Do you know the religion of your family, which as Tina said is important for finding records from this era in Poland.

Took awhile to get cuz I never received & finally called to find out why.
The info on it:
Fred Fredericks , born July 19, 1872 in Suwalki, Russia Poland which was also his last foreign residence.
Doesn't seem like much information to me.
He arrived from Hamburg Dec 13 to New York Dec 30, 1902. It's a german manifest so I'm not sure if it show more than I think it does. The ship is Belgravia. It says he is going to Grand Rapids but I can't tell if the line above that belongs to him nor what is says. Ethnicity/Nationality: Russland (Russian). I can't tell if it says he is traveling alone or if his wife & daughter are with him.

So... is it possible to find more info on him with this?

Do you have any idea where these people were born in Poland. The previous person, who was searching for Jasiulewicz, placed her family in Jeleniewo parish in the Suwalki area.

I need to apologize. I misread your message. Five a.m. is not a good time to be doing serious research. When I read your letter this morning, I thought you were saying that Slobodka was a and Sadzawki were surnames, but now I see they are actually a place names. I apologize for the oversight.

I caught it because I was looking up your Polish surnames in a telephone directory. I found a Poniatowski living in Sl~obo~dka. Sadzawki is located about 4.6 km north of Slobodka.

When you use the Slownik to locate the gmina and parish, you need to know that the "l" and the second "o" have diacritical marks. :) I still have not learned how to set up my computer on how to install the Eastern European language feature. I had it on my old computers, but every time I buy a new computer, it seems everything is different. After I bought the 2010 version, I learned I was not able to read any of my old documents. I had to pay extra to install MS Winword. It used to be that you could read any document program that Microsoft installed through the years of its existence. You can find the letters with the diacritical marks at this site: http://www.pogonowski.com/Slowniki/main.php. The first box is to translate Polish to English. The second one is for English to Polish.

Suggestion: Go to this website: http://www.herby.com.pl/indexslo.html. It is all in Polish. In the white box, type in ko*asi*ski. It will give three spellings of the name. I am going to use ~ to indicate a letter of the Polish alphabet with a diacritical mark.

Kolasinski = 32 total in Poland & none of them in Suwalskie woj.
Ko~asi~ski = 80 total in Poland & none of them in Suwalskie woj.
Kolasi~ski = 5293 total in Poland & 24 of them were in the Suwalskie woj.

This is a surname study, which was done by Professor Kazimierz Rymut in 1990. At the time this was done he was working at the University of Krakow.

This site: http://www.herby.com.pl/naz_skroty.html gives you the names of the abbreviated provinces. The Polish word for province is Wojewo~dztw. It's easier to just abbreviate that word as woj.

The 1990 study was derived from the Polish national retirement system, similar to the Social Security sytem in the US. There were many errors in this report, but it is still useful. He even added old names, which were no longer in used in 1990. Basically it did not cover children, who had never found work that required them to begin paying into the system. It's easier to just say it was a study done on surnames used by adults. :)

There were 2951 people with the name Poniatowski. Hightest concentrations for the name were in Warszawskie and Suwalskie.

Slobodka was not found, however there was one person listed with the name Sobo~dka in the old province of Ciechanowskie. There used to be a name written as Sobodko.

Sadzawki was not listed in the site.

On the list of full spellings of the old provinces, are the word Zobacz Mapa. If you click on that link, it will show you a map of where all the province were from 1975 through the end of 1998. Before 1-1-1999, there were 49 provinces. On that day they merged them into 16 new provinces. Some had the same names, but the boundaries where changed.

There was another study done in 2002. It is not online. I have it on a CD that used to be sold. Last I heard no was plannin or producing any more of them. Professor Rymut is no longer living. He was very versed in the meanings of surnames. He wrote a series of 15 +/- books on all the surnames found in Poland at one time or another, giving their meanings and origins. He was in the process of writing another series for all the names of the villages and cities in Poland. I do not know if anyone is still working on completing it.

This is the English version of the Poland State Archives: http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php?l=en. To learn in which specific archives branch a parish is in, type its name in the first box under the words “The PRADZIAD database” and click on your Enter key. My grandmother’s parish was Jeleniewo. When I enter that one, I see that they have Roman Catholic records from 1828 through 1910. They have the civil records from 1808 through 1825.

The various agencies send their records to the archives in Suwalki when they reach 100 years old. Records, which are younger than 100 years, are kept in the local civil administration district. To find those you need to write to them. Sometime books are missing, so it can be a hit or miss system. The Archdiocese receives copies of the book from the churches after they become 75 years old. You will find religious organizations not so helpful, even if you send them donations. I have been told that priests do not have time to do our genealogical research. It’s true because they are not staffed like the churches in the US and other places. It’s the priest and organist in many of the churches. I have found no secretaries in them in Poland. It does not mean they do not have them, but I have not seen any or heard of any.

Before 1808, records were kept in Latin by the churches and gminy (civil administration districts). Beginning in 1808, they were changed to Polish by order of Napoleon. In 1868, the Russian government ordered them to be written in Russian by everyone who kept records. At the end of WW I, the people reverted back to writing them in Polish, and since then have not changed.

If you know a village or city were a person was born, married and/or died, you can use this online website to locate the correct parish or gmina (gminy is plural for gmina): http://dir.icm.edu.pl/pl/Slownik_geograficzny. This gets tricky because it’s in Polish. There is no English version or it. The Polish language has 32 letters, whereas ours has 26. Their alphabet does not have the letters q, v or x. The other 23 letters they have are just like ours. The letters a, c, e, l, n, o, s and z have diacritical marks (accent marks). Note the letter z has two separate letters with different diacritical marks, so there are 3 zees. Each letter in the Polish language has a specific sound. Our English language has several sounds, so it is mostly memorization of how to say specific words. Polish also has two letter combinations to get different pronunciations.

What I do is use http://mapa.szukacz.pl/. On the right side of the page is a box under the word Miejscowosc (means place). Type in the name of the place in the box using our alphabet, and click on your Enter key. The program will know what you want. Let’s say your ancestor’s village was Szurpily. Type it in, and it will appear with the diacritical mark on the letter “l”. Copy and paste it into the Slownik website in the box under “w ksiazce”. Click on Enter, and it will take you to the page where it appears. Click on Tom XII, 82. That is telling us it is described in Book 12, on page 82. It is the second entry in the right hand column. The first entry is the jezioro (lake). Ws is the abbreviation for the word wies meaning village. It says gm. (gmina) and par. (Parish) are Jeleniewo. Jeleniewo is the word to type into the State Archives page. Now that we know that Jeleniewo is the correct parish, when you write to the archives you will tell them parish of Jeleniewo because record books are filed by the names of the parishes. 

If you want to do your own research, you can order microfilm from the Family History Center in Salt Lake City. First you need to find a Family History Center near your home. You can use this website to locate one: https://www.familysearch.org/locations. This is the site for their online
Catalog: https://familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp. With the latter site, you type in the name of the parish and click on your Enter key.

This is an LDS website that had a great tool for Polish Genealogical Words used in documents: https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Poland_Genealogic.... Russian is tricky. There is a two page list showing the equivalents of English, Polish and German for the Russian Cyrillic symbols. It’s at this site: http://books.google.com/books?id=qSEBjYeyUpAC&pg=PA456&a.... Print them; scan them, and store them in your computer. This is another good site for Polish words: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polwgw/terms.html.

BTW … I was the person that opened up the Suwalki message board in 1998 when Rootsweb was not owned by Ancestry.com. Although I do not watch it as often as I used to, I so receive copies of all of the letters sent to it. As I have time I reply to them. I also have two surname mail lists and one for obituaries for people with Polish surnames. Besides all of this, I am administrating 8 surname DNA projects. It seems I have bit off a lot to chew. I do what I can when I can. There is only one of me. There used to be a woman who helped me with the website I used to have and helped with administrating the Poland Border Surnames mail list, but her health is not so good, so now I do it by myself. I’m not complaining. I enjoy all of this activity, but with doing my own research and all of this, sometimes I am not on top of things as I used to be.

I welcome you or anyone to write me. Many people come back to me years later and tell me how I helped them, but I don’t remember them anymore. Sometimes I will remember their surname(s) or special situation, but after so many years of this, it’s impossible to remember everyone anymore.

Hi Tina,

I had considered writing to the Suwalki Archives but, didn't know the best way to go about it. Also, I do not know Polish and sorting through the records in another language was not much of an option. How did you go about getting the records from Poland. I too have done all of my families research myself but, when it came to getting some of the church/parish records out of my great grandparents former villages I figured a local would be the best route.

Do you have ties to Suwalki? I am generating quite a list of names starting in from about the middle 1700s to late 1800's. I would be happy to send you anything I might have.

I have found that if I am researching, it is less expensive to view the LDS films for all of the Suwalki area at the local Family History Center. Records from the 1600's thru 1884 can be copied for .25 each.

If I need more recent records, I write to the archives in Suwalki. That way I do not have to pay someone their travel time and/or mileage from Warsaw to Suwalki and back to Warsaw.

I get a bigger thrill out of finding my ancestors records myself. It's a personal approach that gives me much satisfaction.

It is possible that they were from East Prussia and lived in Suwalki. This would mean they were born elsewhere. What religion were they? What records have you found for them? Citizenship documents, draft cards and marriage licenses, obituaries, death certificates and sometimes birth records for children tell where parents were born.

I have very little to go on yet. I am looking for information on Fred Fredricks ((Fredericks, Friedrich, Fredriz (on 1910 Immigration)Friedrych)) & wife Amelie Seitz. They are from “Suwalk” Russia. He was born approx 1872 & Emily 1878. The 1910 census says his parents were born in Russia also.
Fred & Amelie were married before they immigrated. I have found Fred's 1902 immigration record which shows he left Hamburg & arrived New York. I have ordered his Michigan Naturalization record.

GUTZAT & OBEREINER and Suwalki/Wartele (DE),Valteliai areas

MAJOR genealogy break through. I created FB groups for the purpose of furthering my genealogy research on my families. My mother's line (GUTZAT) from Germany (as my grandfather told my mother, though his place of birth he always listed as RUSSIA) has always stumped me. I have 3 people from Germany and one person from Poland who joined the GUTZAT Family group. Today, the person from Poland post...ed some information about an individual with my great-grandmother's last name (OBEREINER) and the village they were from. Imagine my surprise when I recognize the name (Wartele (DE),Valteliai) of this very tiny place as the same place my grandfather and his 2 brothers listed on their hometown in Germany on the ships passenger list in 1905. Since I could not find a place by this name on the internet, I attempted to translate it into English a couple months ago and found it meant 'waiting'. Now I find it is an actual place not 'WAITING'. On top of this, Wartele (DE),Valteliai, was behind the IRON CUTAIN in Federal Republic of Germany the Federal Republic of Germany. These little bits of information all put together, explain WHY

It is believe the GUTZAT family has origins in Lituania, where Wartele (DE),Valteliai is located.

Why this place Wartele is listed on the ship's passenger list, I always thought they were from Gryzbina, Suwalki area near Wizjany. They are near there, within 6-10 miles, of this place to the NORTH called Wartele (Lithuania/Germany/DE/Poland depending on the year). I've always been looking to the South or East or West.

How my OBERIENER family got behind the IRON CURTAIN. My mother's family and her GUTZAT cousins sent money and things to the Obereiner Family behind the Iron Curtain during WWII, because things were very bad there they could not afford to take care of themselves. They sent money for the family to buy a cow, so the children could have milk. The money ALWAYS got through, the thing never did.

I just can not believe my good fortune that God has blessed me so. If any are searching or have info about these areas I would love to hear from you. Cindy

The closed I found to your name is Myszkinis.

This means there were 19 people in Poland in 1990 with this surname. 19 were in the old province of Olsztyńskie and 9 in Szczecińskie. Olsztynskie is mid to NE Poland. Szczecinskie is in NW Poland.

Do you know where your family came from in Poland? Myszkinis sounds more like a Lithuanian name to me.

I have done extensive research in the Suwalki area of NE Poland. I have relatives with the names Urbanowicz, and Wiszniewiski. One of my cousins is married to a woman, who had Barszczewski lineage.

I'd be interested too. My Gutzat and Obereiner relatives emmigrated to the U.S. from Suwalki in the late 1890's and early 1900's. I haven't found any info on them in the 'old country'. They list Russia as their place of birth, but always indicate they are German on Census records.

I know this is a very old post but were ever able to find any resources that show surnames in Suwalki. My relatives were also there around the same time until they came to the U.S. in 1904. Last name was either Miskin or Miskinis.

My grandfather Joseph Maskelunas b1874 in Wojnuny or Sejny. He immigraded in 1895, married in 1904 and returned to Lithuania in 1905. He was back in the US in 1906 and my father Stanley, was born 1907. He remained in the US from this point on.

From my findings so far I know Stanley Maskalunas b1879 and Eva Maskalunas b1870 brother and sister to Joseph immigrated to US around 1890.

I believe my ggrandfather Matthew Maskalunas b1832 and ggrandmother Theresa Baranauskas b1834 remained in Lithuania, along with siblings MorF Maskalunas b1867 and MorF Maskalunas b1871.

I'm new at this, just began my family tree this March. If you could give me any suggestions, it would be greatly appriciated.

Attempting to find relatives of my father, Julius Jasiulewicz which he changed to Guslavage. I recall my Dad talking about his brother who was a monk. He had one bother who changed his last name to Lavage. He also had a bother Mike. My dad died from woring in the mines, Nanticoke, Pa.

traceing my grt. grand father who is told to have hid his real name due to somthing in old country we have found 3 diff. spellings from miss spelling on ship manisfest to census to his own different spellings. many as we know had to run/escape for how many different reasons. soooo i do have a letter from grt. grand looking for his brother who he is telling the Ritters Polish Program that brother comes from the "Suwaulskiej/Suwalki" land & viallage of "Malisowizna/Malesowiza". dont know BUT the things that make 1 go hmmmmm eh!!

Hello Kara,

There is a site I use to find surnames, which existed in Poland. It is one that you can search for names. It from a name study, which was done by Prof. Kazimierz Rymut, of Krakow University. He is now deceased, but his research survices. At this site: http://www.herby.com.pl/indexslo.html, I typed in Felgen* and clicked on enter. I found three surnames beginning with Felgen. These are the results:

Nazwisko Ogólna liczba Rozmieszczenie
Felgenau 7 Ci:1, El:6
Felgenhauer 7 Gd:6, Ka:1
Felgentraeger 2 Op:2

Do you think the name could have been Felgentraeger? In looking at the abbreviations of the places listed where the people were found in Poland in 1990, they are all in the parts of Poland, which were occupied by Germans and Austrians. After WW II, those not being Polish were ordered to leave. Many who were of Polish lineage stayed.

There are microfilmed records for various religions and civil records for Suwalki and the surrounding villages outside of the city limits. Do you know the religion of your ancestors? When did they leave Poland?

Felgendreher's from Suwalki

I have many documents that my Felgendreher ancestors are from Suwalki, but my older relatives here believe they were German. Does anyone know anything about Felgendreher's? My older relatives also believe the name is Felgendreger, but my documents clearly say Felgendreher. I'm at a stand still as to what to do. Does anyone know of a heritage site for Suwalki?

I have no Tylenda lineage. I have a relative, who married a widower, whose wife was a Tylenda. This all happened in Poland in the 1800's.

If we are related, it's through another surname.

Hi Tina, We've been in touch before but it's been quite a while. My relatives are from Throop, PA. I thought we had determined that one of our great, great, etc. grandparents were either sister or brother.

I have found some USA records on Leon and Waleria I had no luck with Justyna Tylenda. I've also found addresses and telephone numbers for Tylenda people living in Lackawanna County in Pennsylvania, near Throop. You did not listed an email address with the message you posted on the Suwalki message board, so I am unable to send these records to you. If you will write to me at polska.research@gmail.com to give me your email address, I will email everything I have found to you.

I have traced my grandmother's family to the 1700's in the Jeleniewo parish.

There are others who came from the Jeleniewo parish with the name Tylenda. Maybe they are also related to you. I am not related to any people named Tylenda. I set up the Suwalki message board for the old province named Suwalki in about 2001, and watch it to help people and to hopefully find cousins of mine who are also researching.

The only Berlin~ski I was able to locate in the old province of Suwalki were not in the Krasnopol area. They were in Elk in 2002. http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/ This program breaks them down by powiat only. A powiat is like a county in the US. The map indicates 1 to 5 of them.

I am making my family tree, so I have some information for you about Tylenda family / of course if is the same family/. My family Tylenda is from Udryn near Jeleniewo in district Suwalki -Poland. Father of family Antoni Tylenda /born 1856/and his wife Eve had four children /Waleria, Justyna, Leon - born 1881, Wanda - born 1899/. Three of them emigrated to the USA in the begining of 20 centuary, the last child Wanda - my grand mother didn.t emigrated to the USA becouse of her health these time. I found Leon's data in USA because I have known his family name but Justine's and Valery's history in America I haven't found yet because they was married and they have changed family names. I was in New York and I have found Leon and his wife Helen groves in Throop Pa. It is my succes. My grandmother Wanda all her life missed her brother and sisters, I promissed her before her death that one day I will found them i I put light on their groves / then i didn't belive I will find in the future, I was ony 6 years old :)/ Life is full of surprises/

Before you can find any records in Lithuania, you will need to know the exact place of birth for your ancestors. This means you will need to find record in the US, which will give you that information. Records will be over 100 years old, so they should be in the archives in the capital city of Vilnius in their national archives.

If you are trying to find relatives in Poland, it is unlikely that you will find any unless they were not Jewish. You know what happened during WW II. After the war, the Jewish people and those of other than Polish nationality were sent to other parts of our planet.

If you wish to do genealogical research, and you are positives that they were from the city of Suwalki, you may find them in the Jewish records, which were filmed by the LDS. It looks like the spellings of these names is more on the Lithuanian side versus Polish. Do you mean the city, county or province. The Suwalki area used to cover what is today Belarus, Lithuania and Poland.

Did all of these people stay in the old country or move elsewhere? If they moved, where did they live after moving and when was this move made?
