Re: Bartniki,Suwalki,Poland

Depending on the time frame records can be found in Belarus and/or Poland.

I was able to help the researcher by giving him a list of telephone numbers for the residents of Bartniki. I had a copy of a telephone directory and gave him a list of everyone in the village, but it burned in a fire in 2007. My house burned to the ground. The researcher wrote to several of them, and found two cousins.

I will be going to Poland in July of next year and hope to get another one. There is an online directory, but it does not list everyone, so I tried Makowski and Makowska and found no one with that surname listed.

I have a 4th great grandmother, whose maiden name was Makowska (female spelling of Makowski). I have no idea in what village she lived before marrying my 4th great grandfather. They married somewhere and lived in Czerwone Bagno. Sometimes you have to hunt for the marriage parish since they are performed in the parish of the bride.

Tina Ellis

I also find that strange. Using http://www.herby.com.pl/indexslo.html to locate the names of adults with this surname in 1990 in Poland you can find there were 261.

Nazwisko Ogólna liczba Rozmieszczenie
Kiersztyn 261 Wa:8, BP:1, BB:10, By:1, Ka:17, Ko:6, Kr:4, Łd:8, NS:14, Ol:6, Os:1, Pl:4, Pł:1, Pr:4, Ra:3, Sd:39, Sł:5, Su:78, Sz:11, Ta:3, Wr:6, Za:31

Most were in the province of Suwalski - 78.

If you use this site: http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/, it will give you the top 10 places were most adults with this name were found in Poland in 2002. This tells you there were 62 just in the city of Suwalki.

If you click on on the colored locations on the map, it will show you the cities or powiat (county) where they found the surname in 2002.

Maybe his birth was not registered.

Tina

If he was born in the city of Suwalki, you can write to the archives to see if they have his record. This is their email address: archiwum@suwalki.ap.gov.pl

They have these records:
ewangelicko-augsburskie - Lutheran
filipońskie - The Oratory of Saint Philip Neri
mojżeszowe - Jewish
prawosławne - Orthodox
rzymskokatolickie Roman Catholic
cywilnego - civil

Records are sent to archives after they reach 100 years of age. When you write, you may want to ask them what their fees are to conduct the search. You will need to give them the religion the family practiced.

Hope this helps you gain some helpful information.

Tina Ellis
I just checked the telephone directory, and there are not people listed in the city of Suwalki with the Mikalajunas surname. There were also no adults with this surname in the country of Poland.

Do you mean the old province, which covered part of Lithuania? Saying Suwalki does not clearly define where they lived in respect to the borders, which exist today.

Tina

Hi
Alas there are no records available.Rumor was that the father of Stanislaw 1900 got killed in 1905 in a train
accident or working on a railroad in Suwalki.Another rumor
verifies his time of death except links it to 1905 revolution,a socialist failure, followed by a lot more
succesful one in 1917.His name also was Stanislaw following
the tradition of naming the first born son by this name.
George

Lo siento. Yo no hablo español.

Hi I'm maia, Argentina B USCO the ancestors of Talanda
The mombre and Miguel Angel is the Talanda Polish parents, Martin and ana juan born son of Lublin jorge talanda were 6 hemanos, Pedro, Juan, Catalina, Miguel, there is another who stay in poland does not know the name

Tina Ellis

Bryzgiel, according to the Slownik, from 1880 the parish was Wigry.

http://dir.icm.edu.pl/pl/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_I/395

In 1744, the parish Suwałki Capella PP Camaldulensium (Latin name for the Suwalki parish), covered Suwalki, Biala Woda, Krzywulka, Zywa Woda, Brody, Okoniowiec, Plocicana, Turowka, Kukow & non amplius.

http://www.mem.net.pl/stg/diecezjawilenska1744p.htm

The LDS only have the Roman Catholic records for Wigry from 1808 through 1882:

Maybe the archives in Suwalki can help you: http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php?l=en&miejs.... They don't have 1890, but you said around then, so I assume you are unsure of when she was born.

Last resort is the church in Wigry: http://www.genpol.com/Katalog_Zasobow_Metrykalnych-parafia_9....

Letters to the archives can be in English. They will reply in Polish. Letters to the parish need to be in Polish. The Polish Genealogical Society of America has sample letters on their website at http://www.pgsa.org.

Tina Ellis

I don't happen to have a Celia Borkowska is my family tree, but you just never know. I'm interesting in pursuing some research on Celia, if she indeed was a Borkowski. There are areas which were in the Wizajny parish, where some of my Borkowski family lived. Maybe she is one I missed.

I checked Ancestry.com and found several men named Moses Rosenberg, but none with a wife named Celia in any census records. What more can you tell me?

Thank you.
Tina Ellis

Suvalki was a large area of what is Lithuania and Poland when this person was born. Suwalki is Polish. Suvalki is Lithuanian.

Before you will be able to learn anything about this person, you will need to know where he was born. Records over 100 years old are in the archives in the capital city of Vilnius. Records are filed by religion and parish.

Mikalajūnaitė is the femenine version of the name. Mikalajunas and Mikalajūnas is the masculine verison. There are over 180 of them listed in the telephone directory in many places.

There must be records somewhere in England, which will tell you where he was born. Try marriage license application, birth records of children, church records, military records, citizenship records, census records, voter registration records, death certificate, obituary, etc. Once you discover where he was born, you will begin to learn about him and his family.

Tina Ellis

Stol~upianka was called Stalupen at one time. This is in one of the prettiest areas of Poland ... rolling hilling with forests, lakes and field crops.

The parish for this small village would have been in Wizajny. The LDS have microfilmed Jewish, Protestant and Roman Catholic records for this village. You can check to see what records they have using this website: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a....

If you are trying to find a marriage record for them, you need to remember that most marriages are held in the parish of the bride, so knowing where she was from will help you find that record.

Good luck in our search.

Tina Ellis

In all of Poland there were 261 adults named Kiersztyn. http://www.herby.com.pl/herby/indexslo.html

There are nine telephone listings in the city of Suwalki, which problem means the bulk of the people live in outlying villages. http://www.ksiazka-telefoniczna.com/

Do you know what village?
I am a Tylenda born in Buffalo, NY. When visiting Poland in 1987 I met a cousin named Henryk Tylenda who took me to a Tylenda gravesite in Suwalki, Poland. Wladyslaw (born 1915) and Helena (born 1917) along with three children (Anna, Adas, and Ewa) were buried in one large gravesite. My grandfather Stanley came to the US, making his home in Buffalo, NY. My father, Joseph Edward Tylenda, married Marie Barczykowski. Are any of you familiar with the names on that gravesite?

Hello,
I've been fascinated with these dialogues. I've been to Suwalki, Poland and have seen the gravesite of my great grandparents Wladyslaw (born 1915) and Helena (born 1917). Three children are also buried in the grave; Anna, Adas, and Ewa. The gravesite shows "Tyleno'w" which we were told means family of Tylenda. I met a cousin named Henry Tylenda who lived in the city of Poznan. My grandfather Stanley immigrated to the United States (not certain of the year). My father, Joseph Edward Tylenda, married Marie Barczykowski in Buffalo, New York.

I'm uncertain of the exact date Stanley came to America. I do know that he later sent for his wife Emelia/Emily Judkiewicz. She was originally from Bialystok, Poland. They had six children in Buffalo, NY; Helen, Leo, Al, Jean, Joseph and one female that the name escapes me.

I've been told that the name Tylenda means "flax growers".

My husband's grandparents, Moses WINKIELMAN and Gittel ROSENBERG were married in Wizjany.
Most of the WINKIELMAN famiy came from Jeleniewo and the towns in the Suwalki area.
Moses I. Rosenberg and his wife Celia are buried in NY. We found their graves last year.
Linda

If you are still out there, please contact me. My grandparents Jacob and Ludwika (Micks?) Klimach were from Wizajny and may have been married there or in Suwalki. I think that the name of the church was Stolpianka. Any suggestions you have on checking this out would be great.

Len

Hey I was wondering if your Bercosky could be related to my ex-husband family. I know they were from Lithuanian from I didn't really pay attention to her telling the family history till i got older and started doing the family tree for my son. But sounds like you may have info that i can put with mind and maybe help you but i don't have it back to far with them.

Hi Marcin,
We may have a connection. My maternal grandmother MAY have been a Masiejczyk. My godmother, Mary Jarecka,(now deceased)was the daughter of Alexandra Masiejczyk and Walter Jarecki. My mother Frances Cituk always referred to Alexandra as her Aunt. I do not know my maternal grandmother's surname. My maternal grandfather was Nik? Cituk. As of 1912,they lived in Bogaty, Suwalki.I have been told that a Marian Masiejczyk lives in Lesne Stary Bohatery and a Edmond Masiejczyk lives in
Jarzebinowa? or maybe Augustow. My father was Janek Zaniewski and he came from Perstun. Since all thier villages were in close proximity, it is likely that the families knew each other. What do you think. Thanks.
Joan

Lithuanians Mikalajunas

My teenage children want to know their background. Their grandfather Leonard Nicol was probably brought to Scotland as a toddler after 1903 but before 1914. On his Dux medal from his school in Motherwell he is named Zigmont Nicol. Third hand info has suggested his surname was originally Mikalajunas and the family was from Suvalki(?) He was from an all boy family apparently. One or two brothers were killed in WW1. At least two including Leonard moved to England and had photography businesses in Manchester and Bristol (?). Any information confirming Leonard's original name, his parents or siblings names would be very gratefully recieved. Leonard died in the early 1980s totally out of contact with family. My kids don't necessarily want to bother living relatives but are keen to know where they come from.
