Hi Dick,

I would like to have a copy myself but have not yet received it.

I do have a request also - I am the administrator of the Swain email list. We've been getting several requests on the list for your document. I'm not sure whether you are a subscriber of the list or not, but if not then you aren't seeing the requests. Usually what we suggest on the email list is that people email the person privately to request a copy. This keeps the list from getting cluttered and people's email inboxes from getting filled up with lots of "me too" requests. Would you possibly consider providing your email address either here at the board or on the list, so that people can email you privately with their requests? It would help out a great deal!

Kind regards,

Dee
Do you have Swains of Nantucket, Tales and Trails? I copied the entire book and I have now so many relatives I am swarming in them. The report that takes the original Richard Swain back into England three more generations, is The English Origin of Ricard Swaine of Hampton, New Hampshire and Nantucket. It is in The American Genealogist Oct 1999, Vol 74, no 4, pp 241-249. It corrects some misinformation about Ricard that has been written everywhere. The author is Clifford L Stott, CG FASG and lives near me. He happened upon records about Richard and Basill, and did research going back three more generations. It is very interesting as now I can go back to 1497 Sue

The confusion was that the first note said that John Swain who married Mary (Weare) Wyer was often called John England.

I am a descendant of John. Please read my other message that I just wrote, as it hasn't come through as an email. This is my lineage-I can go back three generations in England, but beginning here: Ricard Swain and Basill, John Swain and Mary Weare, Joseph Swain and Mary Sibley, Ebenzer Swain and Lydia Giles, Ebenezer Swain and Lydia Ellis, Shubael Swain ( who did not die in 1808- he is in the 1813 will of his parents) and Sarah Turner, Shubael Edgar Swain and Catherine Nagle, Edgar Swain and Evangeline Scherrer, Eva Swain ( my grandmother) and Ray Fish and Carl Vollmer, my mother through Ray Fish - Barbara Jean Maxwell, and myself who married a Maxwell.

The book, Swains of Nantucket, tales and Trails, has a ton of Swwain names in it, including those who moved to other places. I wish these messages would come through. Sue

Sue, I forgot to give you my reference to the naming. From One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families, Surnames, Q-T, Page 228. "He and his sons John, Joseph and Benjamin, and son-in-law Joshua Sevolle, lived on farms in that section of Nantucket called Polpis. There also lived with him another John Swain, who came from England when young, and who to avoid confusion of names was always called "John England"".

Sue, yes it is quite confusing. The John Swain who was son of Richard is not my direct ancestor, though there is a path to him through his daughter Mary to my line. There is also a difference of a generation. My Ancestor, John "England" is more the age of John Jr., son of John, son of Richard. My John married Patience Skiffe in 1706 in Nantucket. There is documentation that confirms that he came to live with the Richard Swain family and that he was called England to differentiate him from the original family. As I mentioned, my DNA testing would appear to confirm that as it doesn't match that of descendants of Richard.

I would be very interested in what you find in the records you reference as I do not have those available to me.

I have copied a book called Swains of Nantucket, tales and Trails, by Robert Henry Swain. The first Swain who came over was Richard with is wife Basill. A recent article cleared up some misinformation about him that came from someone with a similar name. It also goes back three more generations into Binfield, England, which is where they came from. Richard and his son John were 2 of the nine purchasers of Nantucket. My Swains came from there into NYC. One son moved to NJ but worked in NYC, and one son moved to Ohio. I have done exensive work on my line, but this book has 200 pages of Swains from Nantucket, and the various places they went. It is very informative. I had to break a brick wall with my ggg to find his childhood home in Nantucket, but once that happened I gained a book of relatives as well as going back to 1497. And you you with people from Nantucket are related to 1000's of people alive today. The few families, as they began to arrive all intermarried. I have read 9 books on Nantucket and these books mention Richard and John quite a bit. The general info that is out there now on Richard is somewht incorrect. But the article clears it up. If anyone is interested in this, let me know. I feel deluged with Swain relatives! Sue

I saw two notes on a Swain document. One said that John Swain, son of Richard Swain and Basill was often called John England, as he was born there. He and his wife, Mary Weare, were both botanists. At the end of this document it said that John England Swain was not of the original family. It was a bit confusing. The first one was called Goodman Wyer and his wife Goodey Wyer. The last notataion was a bit obscure. There was a womans name written under it but it did not indicate if she was a wife. I have alot of information on the Swains in Nantuket. You can go onto their Barney Collections and look him up, which I think I will do now. This was on microfilm 906,499- Nantucket vital records on pp 373 and 326 at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Sue

Well, I discovered that the son moved to Montana and died around 1940. All of the temple work was done in the early 30's using RHS's information. My suspicion is that it was the son who collected the info. Now I have to find out if he was related to the people whose info he collected, as it included many Swains and other in my famiiy line. There is a great genealogist here that may know how to prove this- thanks, Sue. Do you have a photo of your Robert?

Thanks Pam
I didn't get to go back to bed, on an hours break from work at moment, one of the good things about being a taxi driver, I can have as many breaks as I want. I have made a note about Benjamin Swain, will see if I end up along the same lines, I am finding it interesting, fun, and sometimes really frustrating when I have chased the wrong person, but it is nice to know there is help out there if needed.

Thanks again

Tina

Dick,
I would very much like a copy of your report. In particular I am interested in finding the origin of John "England" Swain. He married in 1706 in Nantucket. But I have been unable to find any Swain family in England with ties to him. We know that he lived with the Swains of Nantucket but based on my dna testing was not related to them. They gave him the nickname England "to avoid confusion".
Herb Swain hswain@charter.net

Florence Maxine Swain Horton, Louie Marie Swain Harvey, Anne Ruth Swain Houser, Laura Worchester Swain, and Daniel Mack Swain, junior. My mother, Maxine, and Louie are the only two living now. I have been trying to find the Swain's Bar-b-q logo to show to my son. I use my grandfather's recipe to make the sauce for my family.

Cora was my grandmother Effie Soules McWilliams cousin. Where did you get the name Mary Isabella Limpier. Mary was also my grandmother's grandmother. I was not aware that her middle name was Isabella. She came from Poland. I would love to correspond with you.-Linda

My gg grandfather Benjamin Swain was born in South Normanton around 1816 but left as a young man and did well for himself in Manchester cotton industry. I have tried to unravel the Swains of South Normanton but got totally confused! Do not have good records as yet so would have to do some digging, I think his father was James, and the names you listed were not familiar but I guess they were all related to some extent! So hello 'cousin'! Would be happy to exchange info and 'dig' together to try to make some sense of it.

Hi, thanks for replying.
You just don't know how happy I would be if I could answer you, YES! But I do not know anyone from my grandmother's family including her; she died before I was born. My oldest relatives that are currently alive who were raised by her don't know or remember either. When I started researching this side of my family last year I discovered census records only back to 1900 that showed who my g-grandparents, g-aunts, and g-uncles are. Right now I'm relying on other people with any Swain connection to read my posts and know my/our family or try to research our connection. Although I haven't tried it yet, but I thinking of posting and searching on sites like MySpace too. I don't plan on letting my researching fire burn out, its just on low keeping the biscuits warm so if you happen to find out something even close, please let me know.
A wife is not mentioned but just the children...Joseph Ray, Samuel Ray, Stephen Ray, William Ray, Patience Pender, Mary Hyman, Ann (cannot read her last name) Elizabeth Ray. He named son Samuel Ray and Solomon Pender as executors in the will of November 4, 1769. William Swain and James Groom witnesses (hard to read last name but think it is Groom) Alexander is said to be buried in Bertie Co. but have not found him yet, just started researching in Bertie.
