David's second wife was Juanita Shaffer. She lived, at one time, in Apple Creek, OH (Wayne County). I have no information about David Jr. but his sister Sheryl lived in Pensacola, FL and married Gary Condon. David's third wife was Doris Andrews. Her daughter, Linda, lived in Louisville, Stark, OH, at one time. That's all I know.

Interesting information. My husband is Richard from David Swanger's first marriage. Would like to connect with David's other children. I am doing the Swanger family tree and I hit an impasse once David and his first wife were divorced.

I believe that you are mistaken about his name being Charles. I have Joseph Swonger, born between 1790 and 1800, married to Margaret, with son Henry born c. 1824 and daughter Priscilla, born 21 Oct 1824. I believe that Joseph was born "Neiswonger" and that some of his children shortened the name to "Swonger."

There was also a daughter, Dorothy Jane Swanger, born in 1917. Both of the sons are deceased. I don't believe that Robert had any children. David Richard Swanger (1929-1999) was quite a bit younger than either his brother Robert or his sister Dorothy and had, I believe, three marriages. I have six children listed for him, Richard (from first marriage), David, Sheryl, and Ronald (from second marriage), and Linda and possibly a Julie from third marriage.

I have no personal knowledge of your father, only public records information. My database indicates that Thomas Jackson Hardegree was born 29Mar1924 and died 9Dec1961, about five months before the birth of your younger brother. His death is recorded in the Georgia death records as 9Dec1961. He was 37 years old. He resided in Coweta County but died in Troup County. According to the 1930 census, Thomas J. Hardegree, age six, residing in Enon Grove, Heard, GA, was son of Thomas G. Hardegree, age 37, and Eula Hardegree, age 35. Your father had a brother Andrew M. Hardegree who was age 14 in 1930 and thus about eight years older than your brother.

In the 1920 census, your father, of course, had not yet been born, but his parents were married and living in Fourth, Coweta, Georgia. In 1920, Andrew was listed as "Melvin" so he was presumably "Andrew Melvin." He was then age 4 or 5. There were no other children in 1920. Your Hardegree great-grandparents were apparently Doctor L. and Mary Hardegree. Doctor was born c. 1848 and Mary c. 1853.

2008 Schwanger Family Reunion on 28 June 2008

The 12th Annual Schwanger Family Association Reunion will be held in Carlisle, PA, on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the Carlisle Area Sertoma Club house, 311 East North Street, Carlisle, PA 17013. Registration brochures are currently being mailed and emailed. If you do not receive a registration brochure please use the enclosed Registration Form. Below is information contained in the mailing:

On 20 October 1747 Jacob and Maria Schwanger, from Helleringen, Lorraine, Germany (now in France), arrived in Philadelphia in the British colony of Pennsylvania. They soon moved west to what is now Lebanon County, PA, where they purchased land and had seven sons. This family established the lines from which over the next 260 years nearly all Swangers, Swongers and many of the Swanners in America descended.

The Franklin County, PA, Line

The oldest son, Paul, settled near Carlisle and continued a long, prestigious line of the family. Our focus, however, will be on his younger brother and Revolutionary War soldier, Abraham, who settled in the Roxbury and Letterkenny area of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Ohio, leaving descendants in Franklin County.

The Huntingdon County, PA, Line (Maryland, West Virginia)

In addition, we will learn about the once elusive Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia Swangers and how they connect to the immigrant ancestors.

Our Speaker

Dr. Alvin K. Swonger is professor of Pharmacology at the University of Rhode Island and is primary author of what is now a multivolume genealogy called "Swangers, Swongers, Swanners in America." Dr. Swonger has given creative and engaging multimedia presentations of the family's history at each reunion since the association's inception. His style is more like storytelling than simply a rehashing of dry dates and places of family members. Dr. Swonger is a meticulous genealogist with an uncanny eye for detail, but his presentations are more entertaining and informative than academic.

About the Association

The Schwanger Family Association was founded in 1997 in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, in a gathering to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Schwanger family into the United States.
From conversation with family members I would say he would have married Ella after 1920 because they said his second marriage was later in his life.
So than this Ella Schwanger would have been her married name not maiden name.

First I want to thank you for helping me, thanks so much.
Ella Schwanger would have been the second marriage to John Henry Gable after Sarah had passed.
There were three John Henry Gables which gets confusing because John Henry Jr really should have been the III maybe because John Henry has passed they did Sr. and Jr.
John Henry who married Sarah and Ella father is Levi Gable and Mother Elizabeth McLaughlin Stouff Byle husbands had passed during the War.
I do not think there were children with John Henry and Ella just trying to get birth, marriage, and death dates.
Thanks,
Heather

Daniel was a service station attendent. He is listed in the Cumberland Co, PA census in 1880 and in Carlisle, Cumberland, PA in 1910 and 1920. He was born 28Nov1893 in PA. I do not have his deathdate. He was married three times to my knowledge: first to Minnie E. Muidorf in 1899, second to Theresa E. Thompson in 1907, and third to Edna Farner. His parents were George Criswell Swanger and Sarah (Sallie) A. Senseman. Daniel was the fourth of fourteen children, according to my listing. The father, George, was born 1839 and died in 1918. He was son of Michael Nicolas Swanger and Mary Whitcomb, both of whom died before their seven children reached maturity. Michael Nicolas Swanger was son of George Swanger, born in the late 18th century. George Swanger was son of Christopher (Christley) Swanger, born 1759, who was the eldest grandson of the immigrant couple, Jacob and Maria Susanna Leyenberger Schwanger, via their eldest son Paul.

Your Gables were in Lebanon County, PA in 1900, 1910 and 1920, according to census records. According to the 1900 census, John H. Gable was in North Annville and was born in PA Sep 1856. He was married to "Sarah A." born Feb 1860. They had Charles H., born Oct85, William E., born Nov87, John Henry Jr., born Nov 1893, Raymond Paul, born Dec 1895, and Neda Ann, born Jan 1899. This is clearly the family you described despite some descrepancies with your data. 1910 also shows another child, Martin L., born circa 1892. John Sr. and his wife, still Sarah A., were living in North Lebanon, Lebanon, PA in 1910. They have four of their children listed with them although two of them, Raymond and Neda, are also listed with the Daniel Light (age 51) family. In 1920, Raymond was living with brother Charles, separate from the parents. John Sr. was living alone in 1920, as a boarder and a widower. In 1900, John Sr. and Sarah indicated that the had then been married for twenty years, so circa 1880. I don't see any indication that John Henry Gable Sr. was married to an Ella Schwanger. There's a Sarah Light in the 1870 census in Fredericksburg, Lebanon, PA, age ten and she has a brother named Daniel age 14. Both are children of Samuel and Sarah Light, age 55 and 45 respectively. I mention that because there is a John Gable age 12 in Fredericksburg as well. Do you know the names of John H. Gable Sr.'s parents? The John in Fredericksburg is working as a domestic servant in the Henry Byle family.

Your Ella may possibly be the same person that was the second wife of Nathaniel Swanger (1851-1918). Do you know when, approximately or exactly, Ella and John Henry Gable were married? Did they remain together or did they divorce? John was a widower in 1920, so either (a) he might have married Ella Swanger after Nathaniel died, or (b) he might have been married to her earlier in the 1910 decade and she could have married Nathaniel later in the same decade. The dates for this Ella are 1876-1964.

Well, all of that makes sense. I know who that George W. Swanger is. He was son of Peter Swanger and Druscilla Boydstone. He was born 26Jul1834 and was killed at Mound City, Pulaski, IL 6Jun1864 while serving in the Civil War. He served in Co. B, 32nd Iowa Infantry. His wife was Mahalia Crum. Parts of George's family did indeed live in Berrien Co, MI.

Re: Mahala Swanger

I examined the James Smith family of Worth County, IA in their 1870 and 1880 census listings. Mahala is listed as born in NY in the 1870 census, but I agree that she was likely born in IN. If you closely examine the surname given for Charles and for Clara in 1870, you will see that it looks a good deal more like "Swauger" than "Swanger." Since I work with these names all the time, I have learned how easily these two are interchanged and appearances are not always reliable. In 1880, both of these children have assumed their step-father's Smith surname.
I am quite familiar with the John W. Swanger of Michigan who served in company C of the 12th MI Infantry. He was a marrying kind of guy. He had four wives that I know about and some children, but those wives do not include a "Mahala" to the best of my knowledge.
I think that you will find that this Mahala who married Mr. Smith was the Mahala Swauger or Swagger who lived in Vernon, Jennings, IN in 1850. Her father was a Henry Swagger (a shoemaker) and her mother was Mary. Mahala had many siblings, including notably a Henry Thornton Swauger, who is often erroneously listed as Henry Swanger in records. I can't rule out the possibility that one or another member of this family permanently changed the spelling of his or her name to "Swanger" but they were originally Swauger/Swagger. Did your family member who was Mahala's acquaintance have any connection to Jennings Co, IN?
I think that you will likely find that Mahala was not previously married to a Swanger but rather that she was born a "Swauger" and that Charles and Clara were her children born out-of-wedlock prior to her marriage with Mr. Smith. These two children then took the surname of their step-father. I don't believe that Mahala or the children have any connection with John W. Swanger of Michigan, but I acknowledge that the amount of data available does not lead to a clear-cut resolution. I note that this family is also listed for 1885 in the Iowa State Census. Charles is listed there, separate from the family, as Charles Smith in Northwood, Worth, IA.
The 1880 census further confuses things because Mahala gives her own birthplace as IN but her mother's as VA, while both Charles and Clara's entries give their mothers as also born in VA, not IN where Mahala was born! They list their father as born in IN which is not consistent with the father being John W. Swanger.

Mahala Swanger

Mahala Swanger was born 12/04/1839 in Indiana. I don't know her maiden name but I beleive she may have been married to a John W. Swanger 18 years old who served with the 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry company "C" along with my great great granddads brother Perry Washington Cottrell. Perry was killed at Shiloh. John W. Swanger & Perry both enlisted from Buchanan, Michigan in 1861. Mahala remarries a James W. Smith on 05/02/1867 in Worth County Iowa. On the 1870 census the two older children are listed as Charles E. Swanger 8 years old and Clara P. Swanger 5 years old. The younger child is listed as Clarence A. Smith 1 year old from her new marriage. I am trying to find if and how John W Swanger died and what Mahala's maiden name was. In my great great granddad Andrew Jackson Cottrell's Civil War Pension file there is a letter from Mahala Smith dated 1896 saying she had know Andrews wife since the age of ten. I am trying to establish what connection Mahala Swanger Smith had with my family. Thanks

I just found a George W. Swanger that was with the 32nd Iowa Infantry Company B enlisted as a private in the civil War. This is probably the right guy.

I found Mahala Smith listed as buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth Iowa today with a death date of 03/10/1927. I went to the Mason City Iowa Library and looked for her obit on Microfilm for the Globe Gazette paper. Parents are not listed but says they moved to Berrien county Michigan in 1850 from the South Bend Indiana area, then to Iowa briefly in 1856, then to Kansas until 1858 and then back to Worth county Iowa. It states she was married to George W. Swanger 04/02/1858 and he died in the Civil War in June of 1864 and they had three children born to them. I believe one must have died by the 1870 census. She was married a second time to James W. Smith 05/02/1867 in Worth county by a justice of the peace. I found their marriage record at the Worth county courthouse yesterday and it was the 48th marriage recorded in the county. Mahala had 6 children with James Smith. One died who was a twin to Guy Smith according to birth records at the Worth County courthouse. The family moved into Mason City in the fall of 1892 and James died 08/21/1914 and is buried next to Mahala in the Oakwood cemetery. She was survived by Edward Swanger of Hot Springs South Dakota & Clara Englet of Kansas City Mo. from her first marriage to George W Swanger. Mrs Edward Gasbel & Guy W. Smith of Mason City and Mrs W K Fagin of Heron Lake Minnesota from her marriage to James Smith. I still didn't find a maiden name or George W Swangers outfit for ther Civil War yet. Let me know if you would if you find either of these items. Thanks

Thank you. I now know that Mahala was not a relative but a childhood friend on my Martha Jane {Wray} Cottrell. Martha's hsuband Andrew Jackson Cottrell served with the 9th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Company "C", his brother Perry Washington Cottrell served with the 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Company "C" {was shot at Shiloh and died 6 weeks later}, his brother Francis Marion Cottrell Company served with the 11th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Company "K", his brother George Noggle Cottrell served with the 6th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Company "K" and then with the 84th Michigan Colored Infantry as a Hospital Steward, no he was not black and the last brother to serve was John Dawson Cottrell who served with the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry company "I". On my mothers side I also have Julius Augustus Smith who served with the 74th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Company "E". He was a color bearer & was shot through his elbow at Missionary Ridge in 1863 and hit in the leg by canon fire shrapnel at the Battle of Franklin Tennessee in 1864. I have the Remington New Army Model 58 pistol he carried during the war and the silk tassels from the flag he carried and some other things too. Those guys had it rough with all the sickness besides the slaughter. Well thank you again. My name is Mark Cottrell and I live in north central Iowa. My email address is mountainman@wctatel.net in case you want to contact me in the future.

Searching for Mary Eva SWANGER born circa 1892 in the UK

I am looking for someone who may know anything about the following person:
Mary Eva SWANGER was born in the Birmingham area of the UK back in 1892, and she was living with her Parents, who ran a Pub in Shefford, in the 1901 Census. During the 1st World War 1914-1920 she was enlisted with Queen Mary's Army Auxilliary Corps, and the next info available is that she emigrated to possibly Canada, because she is listed as a passenger on a ship that sailed from Liverpool to Halifax, NS in 1920 and it shows her as being aged 28 which would be about correct from the other evidence.
I would love to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of her whereabouts after her arrival in Canada etc.
Regards from the UK
David S C Wilson

Can anyone help with information on what became of the Swanger siblings, William, Harry, Alfred, Eleanor - living St Helier Jersey in the 1901 census. (Eleanor died in London 1944)

Harry was a fishmonger working for his father Alfred in 1901. Did he stay on in Jersey and run the business after his parents returned to England? Both parents died in Hampshire
