Michelle “Shelly” Kay Karmann, the daughter of John F. and Carol Johnson Swantek Jr. was born on February 28, 1965 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska. She began her early education at St. Isadore Catholic School in Columbus through third grade. She moved with her family southwest of Columbus where she continue her education and graduated from Osceola High School in 1983.
Shelly was united in marriage to Jon P. Karmann on August 10, 1985 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. They lived on a farm northeast of Cedar Rapids. Shelly worked at Becton Dickenson from 1988 until October of 2008 when her health no longer allowed her to work.
She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, and among her hobbies were cooking, sewing, crafts, making fleece quilts, and visiting with family and friends.
Shelly died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at her home following a lengthly illness with cancer at the age of 44.
She is survived by her husband John and one son Corey, both of rural Cedar Rapids, NE; mother Carol Swantek of Columbus, NE; one brother Tim Swantek of Columbus, NE; along with many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father John Swantek Jr.; one sister Sandy Porter, and her grandparents Harold & Violet Johnson and John and Victoria Swantek Sr.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with Fr. Stan Schmit officiating. Burial will be at Sunrise Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. Wake Service. Visitation will resume from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the funeral home.
