Swanton, as with several other SHENANDOAH stowaways, is now considered as one of those who is buried in Australia. The final research is still being conducted, and it is almost certain that, like Cobby, McLean and a couple of others, they are all buried in Australia. However, we are making sure that we do not rush out and claim them as being buried here until we have final authentic proof, else we are shown to be incompetent in such research. Any application and installation of grave markers has to be left to the very last, once we have the concrete evidence.

Could be! The name "Colbeck" has been mis-spelled many times, appears as "Kolebeck""kolbec" in somem ontario census. Marys parents were James Colbeck(Coulbeck) born June 29 1830(baptz july 4th 1830) Tathwell, Lincolnshire, england, son of James Coulbeck-elizabeth Gainsborough(GainsBrough)(1881 Tathwell,Linc.eng. census) James came to Ontario in 1851, had brothers,John(Coulbeck)William Coulbeck,Thomas Coulbeck. James lived in Oxford Co, John lived in Brantford(family still there).James came to Billings twp. Gladwin co. Mi in 1881(a little north of Edenville)He married Lucinda Lee in Ontario(1855).No doubt in my mind all the Swantons who came to Toronto are related. Ginni Swanton, used to have a great site for Swanton info, including Irish records, Her family also came from ireland and came to the US,probably more relation!
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

thank you for the information you forwarded. The marriage and the two baptisms I posted earlier are from the parish records of St.James Cathedral in Toronto. That is where the Swanton first lived and worked. There are numerous other records for other Swanton families also in the same parish register. It has been transcribed by OGS Toronto Branch, and is available from them. At some point, some Swanton families moved to Clarke twp in Durham Co. (close to Pickering) which is where John Swanton died, and his widow remarried. I suspect I will find the baptisms of the other children in those parish registers when i get a chance to look them up. As far as I know they have not been published or filmed. If you want I will post them online, or send me a private message and I will forward privately.

Yes, he did re-marry, but no kids by second marriage. His daughter Berta A. Swanton married two times in ontario, and is also buried in Edenville.Lucy was a very good looking woman(i have pictures) and im sure Young was devistated by her death. He drank too much, and im sure this resulted in his death at such a young age(51). Young and family are in the 1870-1880 Edenvbille, midland co census and i found him in 1851 Walsingham, Norfolk co Ont census with Thomas Grandsen family, plus 1861 Walsingham census with wife(Lucy) and one daughter. Young was very sucessfull and apparently very "smart" but he frequented too many "saloons' in edenville(i have a old book on "Camp 16" published in 1939 by a fellow "lumberjack". youngs son, John Simeon Swanton(my ggrandad) also was sucessfull but also had a similar problem. he died in Detroit, 1942 fell down steps at my grandparent home, body shipped up to Edenville for burial. Johns wife(mary Colbeck) born oxford co ontario oct 1865 died aug 1946 detroit(at my grandparnts home) also buried in "swanton plot" at edenville. My grandparents moved back up to gladwin co after Marys death to take over the family farm. grandad died in 1977 and grandmom in 1985.both buried in Tobacco twp cemetery, Tobacco twp, gladwin co Mi.(along with my mom and dad).
Bruce

Thanks for the great information. You know what I find very interesting I am researching George Swanton who lived in Artemesia township, Grey county, Ontario. He was born in Toronto s/o George, sexton of St.james and Charlotte Wright.

His wife Mary Ann Swanton's maiden name is Caldbeck, and her mother who is living with her in the 1901 and 1911 census, is Susannah Caldbeck. According to the census, both Susannah and Mary Ann came to Canada in 1844. I assume that she met George Swanton either in Toronto where he was born or in Artemesia where he moved fairly early. Caldbeck is a very unusual Irish name, and I wonder if she could be related to Mary Colbeck (alternate spelling) who married your ancestor.
George SWANTON of Artmesia and Young SWANTON are probably cousins. Their father were probably brothers, except John came as a bachelor in the early 1830s while George senior came as a married man with many children, circa 1844. He later had more children in Toronto including George. His wife Charlotte Wright Swanton died in Artemesia township in 1878. George SWANTON Sr is buried in Toronto with some of his children, he died in 1853 at aged 63 years old.

I wonder if the Colbeck family moved to Edenville with the Grandsen and Swanton from Ontario.

I will be looking up parish records for Pickering, Durham County when I have a chance. Let me know if you already have some. There were other SWANTON families living in Durham county during that period and I expect to find out they are related. William and Ellen Swanton lived for a few years in Clarke twp, Durham county in 1840s and one of their childen is baptized there. I think William and John were also brothers.

I e-mailed Galen for the info on John and the girls. here is what I have:
Young Swanton married Lucy J. McConnell April 11 1859 Elgin Co. Ontario(note, lucys last name is misspelled as"MCCORRALL" on Lds church records. Her parents were Thomas McConnell born 1805 Ireland(died edenville,Midland co MI)and Ann Pringle born 1806 PA, died sept 15 1883 Edenville.Johns death month is given as March 1847 Pickering,York co Ont. Elizabeths dates-born Nov 18 1814 Ireland died march 2 1888 edenville. She married Thomas William Grandsen nov. 11, 1849 Oshawa, Ontario. young Swanton died april 29 1888 Tobacco twp Gladwin co. Mi. buried Edenvbille(2miles south of Tobacco twp) Youngs wife, Lucy J. McConnell born June 15 1841 toronto,Yourk co, and she died aug 7 1880 edenville,Midland co Mi.buried next to her son George Swanton, who died as a boy, in methodist church cem-Edenville.Young Swanton was a farmer and lumberjack in Michigan. His brother John came to Edenville right after the civil war and brought a bride born PA with him. He lived in Hope twp Midland co Mi and i beleive he died in 1909.Its possible Young died at my ggramps place located 2miles north of Edenville which he homesteaded in the 1880s along with his wife, Mary Colbeck(John born 1863 St. Thomas, Mary born 1865 Oxford co ONt.I lived as a teen next door to my granparents(Swanton family farm, Tobacco twp Gladwin co MI)Edenville, 2miles south on m-30 was known as "camp 16" in logging days, and is a small village now(it used to have two hotels plus saloons. The two Swanton brothers(Young-John) and their wives founded the present day Methodist church,Edenville, where everyone is buried.
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I would be interested in knowing about the children born in Clark twp and when and where Elizabeth Aikens Swanton remarried. The records I have are from St.James Cathedral in Toronto, and that is why I don't have John and the girls. I assume they are born in Clarke twp where John died in 1847.

Where did you get the 1819 arrival date? the record in Toronto for Swanton start in 1831, so I would be interested in knowing where they are before that date. The Beamish and Jermyn they associated with have arrivals of 1831. They are staying in Emigrant House in Toronto, fresh off the boat. By the way, the name Young is common as a first name in the Swanton, and also in Beamish that have a Swanton wife.

Hi! Yes i beleive your are correct! There was a "William Swanton" son of John-Elizabeth Ann Aikens. He is listed in the 1851 Ontario census. John Swanton died in 1847(born 1807 co cork Ireland) elizabeth was born 1814 Ireland. according to family info they both came over to Canada in 1819 as children. elizabeth(Aikens)Swanton re-married to thomas Grandsen born england.John and elizabeth ahd three sons..William born 1834, Thomas"young" born 1836 toronto, and John born 1842. all lived just outside of Toronto. They also had some girls..Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah. Thomas "Young' Swanton, was my gggramp he married in Elgin County, Ont. to Lucy McConnell."Young' and family lived in Vienna twp, Elgin Co(St. Thomas) where my ggramp was born(John Simeon Swanton-1863).The younger John Swanton(born 1842) fought in the american civil war from Pennsylvania reg. The whole Swanton-Grandsen families moved to Edenville,Midland Co Michigan abt 1866..most buried in old methodist Cemetery, Edenville, Midland co Mich.(online at us gen web cemeteries, Edenville, Midland co Mich. I wondered what happened to William Swanton, perhaps John Swanton sr dad was "William Swanton"? John Swanton(born 1863) daughter was my grandmother..Bertha Helen Swanton, born Gladwin co Mich Oct 1892 married Shirley vernon Brown 1912, Midland co.Mich. I also beleive that John had brothers and sisters as there are some of the same witness on the marriages, at the same church. Keep me posted! I know of another Swanton researcher who would be very interested..Galen Grandsen, of Edenville.

Bruce C. Brown

Scotland. I still have no names for his parents. He is still my brick wall.

I am convinced his family was originally from Cork Ireland area because of the Hutchinson middle name, which a bunch of Irish people from that area have -- even women. Evidently there was a Constance Hutchinson who married a Swanton and that is where the name originated. I have long suspected, that Swanton is a english name, and mabe the family moved to Ireland from England earlier because of Religeon? The Swantons from Ireland
were catholic, until they intermarried> My Swanton family moved from Canada to Edenville, Midland County Michigan(US) in the 1860s.

Bruce C. Children were: John 1797, Sally 1799, Mary Ann 1802, William 1803, Amelia 1806, Edwin 1808, Mathew 1810, Jane 1812, Emma 1815,and Stephen 1817, and may be an Ann. Amelia worked in London as a Housekeeper to a family in Grosvenor Street, and i suspect that William moved to Hoxton. Sally, Edwin, Emma, and Stephen remmained in Glastonbury, and Jane died in infancy.

ian Gartlan

Finding Swantons in Lowell Mass originally from Manchester UK

I am looking for relatives of my great grandmother who lived at 123 Farm Lane Dracut or Lowell Mass. They emigrated from Machester England in the 1930's with the adult chidren called Harry, Sidney and Mary Ann? My granmother Sarah Jane was the only one left in the Uk. My mother is now dead so it is difficult to get more info from the UK side and I now live in the USA. Does this sound familiarto anyone my mother was called Carmella, and had siblings Malcolm,Wilfred and Eileen. They kept in touch for many years but now the link is lost.

Swanton Info.

Hi Eddie,
I recently acquired a database with some info. that might be useful to you.The only harriet Swanton in the social Security database I have had her social security number issued in Florida. She was born 11/30/1882.She died in October of 1966,and in Rhode Island. It's fairly likely that this is my mother's paternal grandmother. There is also a harold Swanton lsited as being born 1/19/1890 in Connecticut, he died sometime in June of 1965 but it doesn't say where he lived at that point. As for Ralph Harold....my mom's father....he remains elusive...although I do think I'm getting closer to finding out his whereabouts and ultimate fate. My first thought was that he might still be alive, but given what it known about his lifestyle, I think thats unlikely. I'll keep you posted.

Jack

Michael Swanton

Dear Edward,

I'm also researching a Michael Swanton from County Cork. He was my g-g-grandfather, and lived in the parish of Ballymoney in 1853, and in the parish of Desertserges in 1865. Both are in the Ballineen/Enniskeane area.

I have tons of Swanton information on my web at

I know that there was another Michael Swanton over in Durrus, and another one in the parish of Rathcoursey East in Garranekinnefeake.

The Swanton men in my family line were all carpenters. I think it's possible that your Michael Swanton may have been the son of Michael Swanton(b) and Jane McCarthy, and the grandson of Michael Swanton and Elizabeth (Bessie) Bradfield.

Michael and Jane Swanton lived in the townland of Boulteen in 1882. I didn't see the name Michael Swanton listed in the 1884 birth index, so he may have been born in NY.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Ginni Swanton
Ann Swanton

Ann Swanton, the daughter of William Swanton and Julia Lyons, was baptized on September 23, 1838. The RC records for Enniskeane, Ahiohill, Desertserges and Kinneigh are combined, so she was baptized in one of these churches.

There's a copy of her baptismal record on my web site at www.ginnisw.com. It's under "Swanton Family Tree".

There's also information about her family in the family tree, as well as in "The Swantons of County Cork and Boston", my family history I'm in the process of writing.

Ann was my 1st cousin three times removed. Her father was my gg-granduncle.

Fran Mullins is also researching this family--are you in contact with him?

If you have any additional info about this family that isn't on my web site, I'd love to see it. We haven't been able to figure out where Ann is buried. She also didn't appear in the St. Alban's census with her parents in 1860.

Thanks,

Ginni
Hi, I am looking for any information on my ggrandfather, Thomas, who was born in NY on July of 1867. He married Sarah Frakes and settled in South Dakota. I am very interested to find out the names of his parents and/or any siblings...in the 1900 census Thomas noted that his dad was born in Ireland and his mom was Canada Irish. His parents must have settled in NY, his mother's maiden name may have been O'Mahoney??? Any information would be appreciated because I have seemed to hit a dead end!

Emma Catherine Swanton was my gggrandmother. Born 1819, she was the daughter of Thomas and Catherine Swanton, both born in St. Pancras, London, about 1793 (Thomas) and 1797 (Catherine). Emma married James Cresswell 23 Jan 1843 in Islington, London. It is believed that this family may have connections with the Swantons of Cork, Ireland who, in turn, have connections with the Honner family, also in Cork. Does this ring any bells for anybody - if so I would like to hear from them. I am Charles Cresswell, email: ccc@esmerlda.org.uk
