ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE [SWAYNE] NAME

The name Swayne apparently comes from various sources, and is one of a large number of variations. The Anglo Saxon Swŕn, a pastoral servant, and the Scandinavian Sweyn or Svein, a proper name originally of the same meaning, have given rise to the names Swayne, Swaine, Swain, Swainson, Swainston, Swanton, Swaysland, and perhaps Swann and Swan. These names implied strength of youth. Sweyne, derived from the Welsh swyn, a charm, has probably been converted into one or more of the other forms. The Irish Suibneach, meaning the spirit of the strawberry plant, was parent of many variations, including Sweeney, McSweeney, McSwiggin, Swiney, McSwiney, Swain, MacSwain, Swayne, and names spelled and pronounced similarly. The Scottish MacSweyn was apparently an unusually direct offshoot of the Scandinavian.

So any Swayne can hardly be positive from what source his name has come to him. However, the strong probability is that most of us have come from the Scandinavian. The name, introduced into Britain as a Christian name at, or probably before, the time of the Norman conquest, soon developed into a surname. Sweyn and Sweynson had been common in Denmark for ages previous to that. The well known ascendency of the Danes in Yorkshire from the time of Ethelred, A. D. 868, probably accounts for that district being the principal habitat of the modern versions of the name. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries Filius Suani and Fitz-Swain are found in England. Early in the twelfth century Adam Fitz-Swain or Swainson was lord of Hornsby Castle. "You have the advantage," says the Rev. Joseph Hunter, addressing one of the family, "of having had a line of ancestors living in a good position in the county where Sweyn, son of Alaric, and Adam, son of Sweyn, had such large possessions."

The Domesday Book, A. D. 1085, records several called Svain, Suain, Suanus, Suuen, Swen and Sueno, some of them specifically stated to have held lands under Edward the Confessor, A. D. 1066 or earlier. The forms in the Rotuli Hundredorum, A. D. 1273, are Le Swein, Le Sweyn and Sweyn. All these, including the parent of them, seem now to have practically died out, by being gradually converted into Swayne, Swain and Swainson, the forms most in vogue. In England Swayne is most common, if the British Guide to Relative Precedence and the British Who's Who are reliable indices. In the United States of America Swain probably is most frequent. Several with that spelling came from England to Massachusetts soon after the first settlement, and have spread widely, especially to southern New Jersey and to Indiana. There are records of brothers who consistently spelled the name differently. In colonial times the name of one man was spelled in two or even three ways. He himself was not always consistent in his signature.

Coats of arms were granted to English Swaynes, at least as early as A. D. 1444, when William Swayne received one. This was confirmed more than once, notably on application of Samuel Swain, London alderman, who several hundred years later claimed this William Swayne as ancestor. Descriptions of these coats of arms are in general, but not absolute, agreement.

The name has spread quite widely in lands inhabited by speakers of English. During this compilation letters came from Swaynes whose fathers or grandfathers had come to the United States from England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Germany.

From the PANAMA CITY PILOT, Panama City, Bay County, FL, 11 July 1907, p. 2:

DEATH OF JUDGE SWAYNE -- Judge Charles Swayne of the federal court for the northern district of Florida, died in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital on the afternoon of July 5th, not recovering from an operation on the 2nd, for a complication of kidney troubles. Judge Swayne was born in Westchester county, Penn., in 1842. He was appointed to the federal bench by President Harrison in 1889, and therefore had been serving in that capacity for 17 years. At the time of his appointment he was practicing law at Kissimmee, Fla. He is survived by a wife, two sons, and one daughter. His name became quite prominent a few years since through the effort made by some of the attorneys of this state to impeach him. Of this charge he was acquitted.

I am the self-appointed Swayne family genealogist. My grandfather wrote Chester County Swaynes. I am continuing his work. I would love to know more about the descendants of Glenn Everett Swayne and Helen Halley.

My grandfather learned of them through Edith Carrie Swayne Harvey, who was a first cousin of Glenn Everett Swayne.

I have not had any communication with descendants of Evan Caleb Swayne, although I am in touch with some of his father's descendants.

have you found the info you are looking for? Sam and Zoa Swayne are my husband's grandparents. My husband is Nick, the oldest son of S. David Swayne. As you probably know, Sam and Zoa had 4 sons: S. David, Jim, John and Mark/Ken.

There is also a discussion group at Yahoo for all of these Swaynes, which was started by John some years ago.

I fear someone contacted me about Amos Mercer and I have lost their email etc. The issue was a demonstration of the children of Joseph Mercer and his wife jane Swayne and hence John Calvert.

A fellow researcher working on Calverts has found a record
that shows the orphans, so to speak, of Joseph Mercer, thus demonstrating Amos Mercer as the son of Joseph and in the gaurdianship of John Calvert. Jim Ray has been pouring over documents and found them.

Mr. Swayne,
I am searching for anyone with knowledge of a George W. Swayne. I do not know his birth date or DOD. I only know that he was an agent for the New York Foundling Hospital. He transported my grandmother on an Orphan Train to Wisconsin in 1902. I also know that he oversaw the transport of many children as the main agent for the hospital. I am only looking for details and a picture if possible for accuracy in recording my grandmothers hsitory. If you can help, I would be most gratetful.

They had three children. The first was born 1895 died 1900, both Oberlin, Decatur Co, KS (name unknown).

About 27 years ago I went to an auction on Fisher Road in Athens County, Ohio. In a box of books I found I had also purchased a velvet picture album filled with cardboard pictures and tin types. While cleaning the basement today I rediscovered the album. There were 2 6x7 pictures painted on tin. On the back were the following names. Harry Clay Swayne (Grandfather Maternal) and Bertha Hartman Swayne (Grandmother Maternal). There were also two pictures on cardboard taken in Arlington, Massachusetts. The only other names that were on any of the pictures were Mrs. Rose Creesy taken in Spencer, West Virginia, and a picture that had on the back give to Will Creesy. That picture was taken in King City, Missouri. Quite a few of the pictures were taken in Athens, Ohio. As most of the people look alike in the album I figure it is of the same family throughout. If anyone recgonizes any of these names or places that their ancestors might have lived let me know. Thanks!
