Sweaney - Maryland, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois

Hi,

I'm looking for some help on part of my family. I have an Edward Sweaney, born about 1800 in Maryland, in my tree. His children include Delilah Sweaney, born 1822, Ohio; Julian B. Sweaney, born 1827, Ohio; Mary Magdalene Sweaney, born 1837, Ohio; Levi Sweaney, born 1841, Missouri; and Riley, born 1847, in Hancock County, Illinois. I am a descendent of Mary Magdalene Sweaney who married James Wilson Doak. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Joni
joni@mcburney.ca

William Sweany is the son of John Sweany and Rachel Kessiah Runnion. William married a Sarah and their daughter was your Susan Sweany.

Nathan Sweany is William's brother which makes Susan and Kesiah Sweaney cousins.

Susan Sweaney did indeed marry John Stanfield, William's cousin after William died. I have Susan born 1 Jun 1814 in Guilford, North Carolina. She died 1848 in Jackson County, Indiana.

I wonder...

Thanks :) Andrea Sweaney Kennedy

Hmm. I don't seem to have them listed in my family tree. Is your Susan Sweaney any way related to a Keziah Sweaney married to a Samuel Stanfield?

My e-mail is akennedy@sweaneytree.com
The website is SweaneyTree.com.

I am not from the same line as these Sweaneys directly, but they are a branch from the original Sweaney/Sweany chain.

Andrea Sweaney Kennedy

I am replying to a message you left on the Sweany message board 1 Nov 2007. My Great Grandma was Mary S. Stanfield. Her parents were William Stanfield and Susan Sweaney and from what I have read here, I guess she married his cousin, John Stanfield after William died. The info I have says she was born about 1814/1816 in Jackson Co. Indiana and was married to William Stanfield 9 Mar 1830. Would appreciate any info you have on this family. Please send me your email address so I can contact you directly. I would also appreciate what you have as the Sweaney Wedsite.
Thanks, Mariyn Grusendorf

Sweaneys

Hi Jean, You are looking for information on the Sweaneys and so am I. My Sweaneys come from Idaho, but they are originally from Ireland somewhere. I am trying to find out more. Some of my family like Elmer Eugene Sweaney were born in Kansas and some come from Oklahoma, and maybe as far as North Carolina. You can see where the migration is. My Sweaney family also has a Cherokee Indian line in it, which I don't know where that comes from exactly. It could be a woman named Clara Esther Carter, who is my 3rd Great Grandmother, or her husband my 3rd great grandfather Edgar Daniel Sweaney. I am betting it is from the Carter side, since Sweaney is definitly Irish.
Andrea Sweaney Kennedy
Her parents are James Runnion Sweany born July 27 1791 in Virginia married a Rachel Rider. Had children : Mary F, Mordecai, Louisa J. and William H. Sweany... I have the Sweaney family all the way back to Daniel Sene from Ireland. Let me know if you would like some information. You are right the names change a lot.

It seems the Stanfield and Sweany (Sweaney) families intermarried quite a bit. I am descended from a Susan Stanfield and we have compiled some information that includes five Sweanys:

Susan Sweany b. 06-01-1814
Keziah Sweany, b. 1812
Susan Sweany b. 04-05-1816
Mary Sweany b. 1834
Cynthia Ann Sweany, no birthdate but show a wedding
date of 09-02-1860.

We have no "proof" of any relationships, just sharing information we've collected from various places.

He was probably the firest one in the Riverviw/Sweaney Cemetery but I haven't seen a marker. Some of his kids are at Lone Rock. Does anyonre know for sure?

From his page:
The 1860 Census indicated that Jeremiah Sweaney did not own real estate. The Dallas Co. Plat Book shows that James first entered the land. They lived in Range 19, Twp 34, Sec 9 on land adjoining the Niangua River. The land is about a mile northeast of the Sweaney (or Riverview) Cemetery. This site is just off County Hiway K.

We ought to have Holt Monument put up a stone for him.
I am descended from a Nathan Sweaney, born in Grayson Co., VA. I do not find the name of Rachael among his children but they started being born in 1774. It is quite possible that one of Nathan's father John's siblings (all older than he) had children born in the right year. I don't have any record of these. However, John's 2 older brothers were James, b. abt 1730, and George Wells Sweaney, b. 31 Jul 1735. They were both born in MD but could easily moved to VA later...to be with family as was the general custom. If these names can be found to be part of the family you're seeking, please let me know. They're all "aunts and uncles and cousins" after all. I would be happy to share my Sweaneys with you if it all works out to be same family.

I'm looking for John Sweeney born about 1849 Missouri,he was on the 1880 Dent county census. I know he married Mary Jane Tow in St Louis about 1867 & on the 1880 census they had William 12 yrs, George 8 yrs, Daniel 5 yrs, and ???man 2 yrs (male).I know the 1890 census was destroyed by fire, & Missouri was never reconstructed. What state was the census of J. Sweeney in 1891, and Sweeney was spelt so many different ways. The William on my list would have been around 23 yrs old in 1890.

Carol's 3rd greatgrandfather was Samuel Stanfield b. 1807 and married Keziah Sweaney in 1832 in Jackson Co. Indiana.
The 1850 census, Jackson co. lists William d.(48yrs old, married to Cynthia A.Stanfield (34yrs.)Children by age: Oliver M.(17),Samuel L.(16), charles N.(12),William F.A.(10), Julius H.(6mo)...As you may know,Quaker marrages were documented "after" the wedding so maden names can be trickie.Because mormons were not allowed to marry outside the church the Stanfields,Sweaney,Sweney,Mays,Coxs etc. names are intermingled. With the "Ordinance of 1785" & opening of cheep Indiana land.I found william D. buying several 40 acre plotts in Jackson Co.shortly after getting married. Carol says "Happy Hunting",enjoy the buggy ride, watch those chuck-holes,and it just might be a "Dead End"
Note: We have met with Cheryl O'Neal
