Hi Don, I would love to see your family tree from Eleanor Swearingen. My line comes from Eleanor and Isaac Israel.
Their son married Mary Turner. His name was also Isaac Israel. They had a daughter Eleanor Mathilda Israel who married Peter Rush. I have not been able to find any proof for this, but my Mother was a Rush and this is the information she gave me.

Would any information you have and any suggestions as to how I could document this

Barb Reibold

Hancock County, WV

I need some help sorting out the Swearingens in Hancock County, WV in 1850. I have Karel L. Whyte's book but the particular Swearingen I'm looking for is not found in it.

I have a Henry D. Swearingen, born about 1830 in either WV or PA, who was living in Hancock County during the 1850 census. He is a laborer for Joseph Silverthorn. I am able to track Henry D. to Meigs County, Ohio in 1860-1870, to Brooke County WV in 1880 and then to Midway in Washington County PA by 1890s. He died in 1892 in Midway.

Henry served in the Civil War from Meigs. He first married Mary (widow of Samuel Kirkendall) in Meigs about 1860, and later Mary J. Hand in 1877 in Washington County but not far from Dallas, WV. Mary was the daughter of John and Sarah Hand.

Can anyone help me sort out which Swearingen family Henry D. belongs to in Hancock County WV in 1850?

Thanks,

Rick Wilson
New York, NY
rwilson7@aol.com

This is my Swearingen Descending to my Mother Wanda. I am looking for infomation or someone from the last Burton Swearingen's Family. His Children were Edward Feb 1873 who married Viola Bean on 26 Jun 1907, Annie Jul 1875 who married Adolph Ambos 23 May 1899, and my gg grandfather John Apr 1878 who married Nellie Colip 11 Jun 1898. I know that Annie and Adolph went to Michigan from South Bend Indiana. They lived in Genesee County-Flint. They seemed to have all daughters: Geraldine 1900, Doris 1906, Pauline 1914, and Maxine 1914. If there are any family members who descend from these girls...please contact me. I would love to fill in the blanks. I think Geraldine married a SWIFT. The name Geraldine Ambos Swift is in my G grandfathers funeral book, but my mother does not seem to recognize the name. My family didn't talk about the past so much, which is making it hard to put the puzzle together.

As for Edward, I believe his wife Viola Bean died in Flint, Michigan. In the clerks records there is a viola swearingen who died 25 Sep 1954. If the death certificate I found on 'family search' is the correct edward, he died in Texas 29 Sep 1939, but wife is listed as Mamie Swearingen, but parents are Edward Burton and Sarah Taylor, and that he was born in South Bend, Indiana. So I assume that Edward and Viola must have gotten a divorce. The only child I have been able to find for Edward was Clara 1905, but I think she may have died in 1919 (unsure). If there are any more descendents of Edward, please contact me.

By the way My gg grandfather John was killed in 1902 by someone hitting him in the head with a shovel when he tried to leave the pest house on the indian reservation. My g grandfather always told me his mother (Nellie Colip) was the daughter of a Chief. The only thing is I can trace the Colip family back to Germany. All my Aunts and Uncles have Indian traits as well as myself, so I don't know were to go with this info. As for Nellie she died in 1913. John and Nellie had 2 sons: Forest 1899-1980 he died in Flint, MI. Wayne 1900-1921 he also died in Flint. Wayne lived with grandmother Sarah Swearingen after the Death of his mother, I asume Forest did also, but the census is every Ten years and alot happens in that ten years.

Thanks mbeesley01@yahoo.com

Re: William Swearingen & Susan Baker

I have an update on Bridget Cunningham. I have bothe a civil and church marriage record for my Grandfather, David McCourt and Bridget Cunningham. On both records her name is "Bridget".

However, in the South Omaha, Nebraska City Directory for 1891 there is a Cunningham, O., Mrs, resides at 213 N 26th. David McCourt is listed at 218 N 26th in the same directory. He is working as a butcher at Cudahay.

In the 1892 city directory David McCourt is listed as boarding at S 17th and Bellevue. Mrs. Ora Cunningham is also residing at S 17th and Bellevue. This must be were they met.

On the 1885 Nebraska State census for Douglas Precinct there is an Ora Cunningham (age 23, born Ohio) listed on the same page as Martin Cunningham (age 28, born New York). Also listed is their son, James (age 8/12, born Nebraska), and Matthew Cunningham (age 31 born New York) and his family.

Martin must die sometime before 1892 when David McCourt and Ora/Bridget get married. On the 1900 census for South Omaha, Ora McCourt is living with her son James. She is 38, born in Ohio and says she is a widow. She is working as a cook. James is 16, and born in Nebraska. (David McCourt is living at Harrison and Railroad ave. on the 1900 census) Ora says she has had 2 children, with 1 now living. David McCourt and Ora/Bridget had a daughter, Margaret born in 1893/94 that died at just a few months old. David and Ora/Bridget divorced in 1901.

I am still not sure who Ora/Bridget's parents were. There is a daughter named Flora living with William and Susan Swearingen on the 1880 census for Wyandot County, Ohio -- but other researchers list that Susan's last name as Miller, not Baker, and have Flora married to R. B. Munday. So I don't think that is the right family, but I am not sure. Anyone researching this family?? I'd like to find out Ora/Bridget's parent's names.

The Robert Cunningham mentioned in my other e-mails is not the person that Ora/Bridget married. I believe it is Martin Cunningham listed above.
Thanks. Kathy

There's a Texas death certificate for a Robbie Earlyne Swearingen (b. 5 Aug 1915, d. 11 Feb 1959) which lists her parents as Robert A. Merchant and Nancy Williams. You can see the certificate in "Texas Deaths, 1890-1976" at FamilySearch Record Search (http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#...).
Hi Bud:
I am looking for information on another Hyde/Swearingen connection and hope you might be able to help me. My 7g grandfather, Thomas Swearingen, Jr. (b c1665 and d1710) was married to Jane - either Hyde or Doyne. I have found no proof that his wife was Jane Doyne but strong hints that it was Jane Hyde. Perhaps Jane Hyde married a Doyne before marrying Thomas Swearingen. Do you have any information on a Jane Hyde living in the 1600s in Maryland?
Thanks,
Jim

I agree with the folks at St. Marys that the portraits are probably not of Garrett and Barbara Van Swearingen. The clothing is more typical of the early 1800's, not the late 1600's. They may be portraits of early (Van) Swearingens, but they are wearing styles of clothing that did not yet exist in 1698 when Garrett died. I've been an amateur costumer for 20 years and have researched accurate clothing styles of the period, so although I'm not a professional in that field, I'm fairly sure the portraits are not Garrett and Barbara. We have a portrait from the same period of someone in my husband's family that everyone remembers only as "Uncle Doc". It's really sad how we all forget or garble information over the generations.

I wonder if anyone has any information on my grandmother. My mother didn't know much about her and I would love to find any info that I could on her. She was born Robbie Earlyne Swearingen. Not sure if middle name is spelled correctly. Family was from Texas and Florida. She had 5 or 6 sisters. She married to a man with last name of Josey. Had several children, but all have passed away young. Married Robert A Swearingen from Florida, who is my grandfather. They had one daughter, my mother Jerry Annette Swearingen. My grandmother passed away in 1958 or 1959. She is buried in Texas, although her name is spelled incorrectly on her gravestone. I know it would be from so long ago. Any information would be helpful..

She married a man with the last name Josey, then another time to my grandfather, a Swearingen. They lived in Perry Florida and Jacksonville, Florida. On my grandmother's stone was engraved Svearingen.. The story we always heard was that the engraver was drunk when he engraved her stone.

You could help my data base if you could provide the following info....the dates and places of birth, dearh and marriage to Robert of Robbie Merchant Swearingen...the name and data on Robert Archie Swearingen's second wife who he married on 4 Aug 1973 in Taylor Co, FL...Also do you know the name of the wife of Van C. Swearingen Jr, brother to Robert who was killed in WWII...Is there any chance that Robbie was a nick name for maybe Robin or something else? Thanks for your help.

Walter Swearingen from Missouri and buried in Greyspoint Mo was my great grandfather. He was married to Rebecca Means - they had four girls and one boy, Anna who became Anna Hill, Maude who became Maude Simmons, Kate who became Kate Benjamin (my grandmother), Emma who became Emma Snow , and Claude Swearingen (their only son) Feel free to contact me at kathysoup@charter.net but please put in the subject line Swearingen so I know it is something I should open as I do not open things I don't know who they come from
Re: John W. Swearingen and the Civil War

Thank you for the information on John W. Swearingen. My research (based on his Confederate service cards from the Footnote web site) shows he was in the 21st Regiment Alabama Infantry. I have not found anything to indicate he was in the 14th Alabama Regiment. According to the service cards John was in Company G, 21st Alabama Infantry. This Company G was formed about March 1864 to replace the original Company G, the Spanish Guards, transferred to the First Louisiana Infantry on June 27, 1862.
A New York Times article (a reprint from a Mobile newspaper) dated March 23, 1864 lists the officers captured at Fort Gaines on August 8. The officers for Company G are among the prisoners listed. Fort Morgan did not fall until March 23 and by process of elimination Company A, E, and possibly F were either at Fort Morgan or other locations. Do you have any information to show Company G was at Fort Morgan?
The 1930 Texas Census for Bexar County, San Antonio city lists Alonzo J. Swearingen, age 68 married to Meiark age 52; with son Judson J., age 22 and daughter Nell, age 21; all living at 542 Highland Boulevard.
Thanks again for your help.
Gregory Bova
Tucson
John W. Swearingen and the Civil War

I am gathering information on John W. Swearingen, a Private in the 21st Regiment Alabama Infantry. He was captured during the Union attack on Mobile Bay's fortifications in August 1864. He was eventually sent to Ship Island off the Mississippi coast where he died on December 21, 1864 of Dysentery.
Previous listings stated he was in the 14th Alabama Volunteers, but I have not found his name among Footnote web site's Confederate Service Records.
The information is for a book on the Confederate soldiers who died on Ship Island during the Civil War. Any help will be appreciated.
