Rev. John Asbury Sweat, circuit rider preacher

My great grandfather was John Asbury Sweat and he was supposed to have been a circuit rider preacher in the early 1900's. He was covering the south eastern part of Missouri and I had seen some newspaper clippings in the Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., Missouri area. Unfortunately those clippings has been distroyed and I would love to get them if possible. Does anyone have them or live in the area they were published in that could check the archives there. I live accross state and can not travel there to do so myself.
John died in 1939 and is buried at Ashcroft Cemetery with his wife Mary J. Crews Sweat and their son Hobart Sweat; just south of Poplar Bluff, MO.
Thank you for any help.
Shirleen Sweatt

Sweat Family in Waycross, GA

An extension of my family tree includes Barbara Chester (SHREVE) Sweat who was married to John Henry Sweat, Jr. of Waycross, GA. where they lived for many years. I have additionally found that they both died there on July 5, 1997 and I have obtained their obits from the Waycross Journal-Herald from July 7 & 8, 1997. I find it interesting that they both died on the same day but of course the obits don't supply any reason for how or why they died, nor does it comment on the fact that they died on the same day. I therefore am looking for anyone with information as to how or why they died or perhaps a related news story, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm hoping to learn more about my ggggrandmother, Mercy Ann Sweat. She was born in 1829 in New York, probably in Wells, Hamilton Co. Her parents were Ozem Sweat and Anna Turner. She had two sisters, Hepsibah and Belinda.

Mercy Ann married Joel Richard Hiscock in 1849. They lived in Onondaga Co. NY in 1850. By 1860, they were in North Plains, Ionia Co., Michigan, where they lived for many years. They had four children - Mary Olivia, Alice Elvira, Ozem, and Ernest. Mercy Ann died in Richmond Co., Virginia and is buried there. Does anyone know more about Mercy Ann and her family?

Thank you for your honesty. When the census takers did not identify people correctly it has made it very difficult to trace some of our American Indian Heritage. Like in the 1940, as children we were told not to say that we were of German ancestry ( German was my fathers ancestors).
I have just discovered that I am Catawba/Tuscarora from the Fort Mill, S.C. area. The Catawba were given land in Fort Mill-Rock Hill area for a Reservation. When my GGrandfather married he and his wife left the reservation and lived in Tennessee for a while. My Grandfather was born in Tennessee, then the family moved back to Yorkville (now York)S.C. and my mother was born in Yorkville in 1895.
I am proud to be an American Indian and look forward to receiving my Indian name before I die.
Some of the Sweatt (my mothers maiden name)family moved to Georgia.
The name ALFORT T. Sweat is a misspelling. My documents show this error. The name is ALFRED Thomas Sweat/t born on the Catawba Reservation Fort Mill, S.C. and died in the hospital in Columbia, S.C.
dmmsc@gforcecable.com
Doris

My Great granmother was Addie dean.married to James Walter Sweat. Her daughter,Pinkie Brown was my Mothers mother. You are the first to mention Creek. I was told by my Grandmother they are of cherokee/creek heritage. Creek being an off band of the cherokee. I have pics too.Too many family members were ashamed to mention indian blood for a long time.I asked questions growing up and i can tell you what i know. My Mother is Blanche Brown Hahn. She passed away June 28 2009. Never could understand why so many in the family wanted to keep those secrets.Just poor ol' country folks and should have been proud. We are real americans. So glad my grandmother shared those things with me.Email and let me know if you are related. I went to school in Nashville,Ga. in the late 60's. All our family are still there in Georgia. There are family members researching the Deans and Sweats. Most were inter-married too. I know there a lot with no birth certificates or any proof of being of anything but white, but i know what i was told and yes you are so right. Creek, but the most part was cherokee after they split and moved on and joined other bands. Sad how people can be ashamed of what they are.I don't need proof. I have my Grand parents words and wrote it all down.Hope you reply. Herbie

I don't know the Sweat family, but Carrie Ozena Horner Thompson was my grandfather's sister. I believe one of Carrie's grandchildren (last name of Layton) was looking for information on the Sweat's and they would probably like to have the bible, but I've been unable to contact him. Was there any other information in the bible pertaining to Carrie and my grandfather's parents or grandparents. Thank you for posting the information...I didn't know Carrie's middle name was Ozena...I only knew the initial O. Maybe this new information will help in my search.

C Smith

I am searching for ancestors of Allen N. Sweat, born 1865 in Mississippi. He married Nancy Jane Bryant in 1882 in Tennessee. They lived in Lauderdale Co. during the 1910 and 1920 census. Nancy's parents were W.T. Bryant and Lidia E. Bryant, one brother-William, all from Smith Co, Mississippi during 1870. Allen N. and Nancy had at least 9 children. I cannot find their records after 1910.
One of the sons, Caro or Karo Sweat married Gara Obine Russell in Blytheville, Ark.
If anyone has info on this line of Sweats or Bryant's please respond.

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me when and where this line of Sweat's immigrated from England and the name of the immigrant. My line of Sweat's is a northern line and our brickwall is Israel Sweat b. abt. 1775 in Kennebec Plantation in Maine, he married a Russell whose line is well documented as coming from England. I was wondering if your Sweat line might have migrated about the same time frame or locale as these Russell's.

Is your Sweat line published or available anywhere on the Internet, if so I would appreciate the address?

Thank you

Margaret Graham
(Israel Sweat was my 4g-grandfather)
Im not sure my answer got to you or not. Allen Sweats brothers are believed to have been Anthony, William, and David. Their father was William Sweat Jr. born abt 1740 in Norfolk,VA. and died Nov 1832 in Surry Co. NC. Mother was Sarah Turner born in NC and I have seen her referred to as Sarah Kilborun. Allen was born abt 1759 in Wake Co. NC, and died 29 April 1844 in Bethel Springs (McNairy Co)TN. He married Nancy Evnas (Ivans) who was born 1772 in Virginia.

Nice to hear from you. I grew up in McNairy County. My father and his father born in Bethel Springs. The original farm stayed in the family until the 1930's. I believe the McNair family owns it now. I am 65 yrs old, retired Colonel and live in Germantown Tenn. As a kid, they use to have decoration day at the cemetaries and then dinner on the ground. My grandmother and uncles knew where all the Sweats were buried and who they came from. In the 60's people started stealing the headstones from the old Purdy Cemetary and vandalism was beyond description. I descended from William "Hawkeye" Sweat, who was father to Isaiah, father of William McKinney, father of John Franklin, father of Willard Calvin, who was my father. All, except my father, are buried in McNairy County. My e mail address is Richar5795@aol.com. Send me yours, and first chance I get, I will send you photos of Allens rifle and powder horn.
General Eurbon Wise married a Sweat, and published a book outlining the migration of the families from Virginia and the Carolinas.

Sorry to disagree with you. But myself, General Eurbon Wise, and several other researchers spent over 30 years going over records and documentation. I can tell you that Allen Sweat had sons William 'Hawkeye", Hezkiah, Candes, Dollarson, Terrell, John, and Hillman. Had a daughter named Cynthia. He was also a farmer and employed as a county road builder in Wake Co. North Carolina. His father was William Sweat Jr. born in Norfolk Va. and buried in Surry Co. NC. As an infant Allen lived on the Scott Plantation of Robert Scott and was a close friend of Exum/Axom Scott. When he came to MCnairy Co.area, you will find mention of him in some of the old quarterly tax reports. We have the line traced back to around 1540 in England. You will find a lot of these names lived on in decendants. You might also want to find and view his application for a pension.

There were two migrations of Sweats from England. Two went to Elizabethtown Virginia. There were some Sweats who went to New England: Two were John Swett arrived in Newbury Massachutts on 18 Nov. 1642, and was one of the grantees of the colony. Benjamin Sweat arrived about the same time, because he was chosen a Commissioner for the county in 1665.I believe he was an elder son of JOhn. Benjamins children were Hester born 7 June 1648, Sarah 7 Nov. 1650, Mary 7 Jan. 1652, Mary 2 May 1654, Benjamin 5 Aug 1656, Joseph 21 Jan 1659, Moses 16 Sept 1661, John in 1670 and Stephen in 1672. There was also a Stephen Sweat
Now this information is from research notes complied in the 1980's. I did no extensive research and verification.
outside of my direct line. I hope it gives you some
leads.
There is a record of an Israel Sweat descended from Joseph Sweat, who was a Pvt. in the 1st Massachussetts Reg. during the American Revolution.
Sweat records and graves are found in Devon, County Sussex, Worchestershire, Cambridgershire, Yorkshire and London. My ancestors came from Barnstaple,Devonshire

Hello there.
While browsing online, I found your post looking for relatives and/or Dendra Dobson. She was my grandmother and the reason no one has heard from her is because she was diagnosed with Dementia around 3 or 4 years ago. She was placed in a nursing home 2 years ago, and just passed away on March 11, 2009.

As far as her heritage goes, her mother was Edith Myrick and her father was Ed Myrick. I don't have too many details on them, but can get them from Dendra's daughter (my aunt) Denette. Please feel free to email me as I would love to get any information that you may have discovered and would also be willing to research anything on my side of the family. I look forward to hearing from you.

~Melissa Valencia

The Allen Sweat being discussed was born in North Carolina (likely Wake County) about 1765, and he died in McNairy County in 1844. Although you may find family trees for him, his ancestry is murky. No records have been found indicating parents or silbings. He had seven sons, but I have personally found no use of the name Allen among the first few generations of his descendants. Good luck.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I have visited McNairy County and have photos of many of the Sweat family headstones - including one for A. C. Sweat in Bethesda. I descend from Allen's son Terrel, through Terrel's son Laney. I've been researching the family off-and-on for over 30 years. I joined the DAR by proving my descent from Allen. Perhaps you've seen my transcriptions of Allen's Revolutionary War papers that are on the McNairy County site on rootsweb.com:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnmcnair/military/allenswe...

I also put abstracts of the Civil War records for brothers Laney, Willis and James Sweat (sons of Terrel) out on the same site. The Sweat cemetery is located on land once owned (briefly) by Terrel.

After the war, about 1876, Laney Sweat moved his family to Nevada County, Arkansas. By 1894 he was living in the Chickasaw Nation in Indian Territory. He died at age 90 in 1925 in Floyd County, Texas. Whew - that's a whole lot of traveling in one generation. I was born and raised in Tulsa, and now live in New Jersey. I chose to migrate backwards!

Please feel free to contact me offline. I would love to have a photo of Allen's rifle and powder horn, if you're so inclined. I may also have other records and/or pictures you would be interested in.

Again, thank you for your response. I enjoy meeting other descendants of Allen.
Pam

Patricia, I have seen Hollingsworth in my research on the Sweatt (and other spellings) A good place to start is in Tennessee where many of the Sweatts were then they moved to South Carolina then into Georgia and then into Florida. They mostly worked in the Cotton Mills and moved to where the jobs were available. They were also farmers, working in the mills through the winters and faming during that season.
Good hunting
Doris

I am a granddaughter of Robert Pinkney Sweatt, born in York, S.C. R.Ps daughter Sarah Amelia Sweatt (Moser) was my Mother. Alfred H. Sweatt was the father of Robert Pinkney Sweatt. Alfred (D.) Sweatt was the father of Alfred H.
Mother was born 1895-died 1969.
I am sure that Noah was an Uncle or Great Uncle of mine. Older members of my family made reference to "Noah" when family matters were discussed. Regretably, all of my older sisters and both brothers have passed away (original # of children was 11) so I do not have any family to get information from.
If anyone has information that connects Noah to my line please contact me. I will share any information that I have.
Thank you,
Doris St.Claire
dmmsc@gforcecable.com

If you have any info on Ada Johnson, please share. We think she is buried in an unmarked grave in Pierce County. You can e-mail me at junsweat@mindspring.com.
Thanks,
June S. Sweat
