good question...the one sweeney family ( my grandmother) shows port of entry to be nova scotia...whether or not some of the rest of clan stayed in quebec even shortly as of yet I do not know....IF they did have you tried the Grosse Illse in the St lawerance river? It was used much like ellis island except it was used to treat the many diseases they had whne they left Ireland or the ones the poor darlins caught on the voyage over... try that and it might give you an idea if they did 'stop over' in the closest port city which I believe was Montreal....
let me know how this works out for you...
regards maureen

Francis Sweeney/Sweeny born in Leitrim in 1851

Looking for any information on Francis Sweeney who, according to his RIC record, was born in Leitrim in 1851. He married Rose Ann Campbell in Letterkenny, Donegal on 11 Nov 1886. On his marriage certificate his father's name is given as Myles Sweeney and he is described as a 'Farmer'. Not stated to be deceased so therefore considered to be alive at the time of son's wedding. On the marriage certificate Francis's surname was spelled 'Sweeny' but his father's was spelled 'Sweeney'. Francis was my maternal great grandfather. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Frank

Erin, I know your posting is about 10 years old. My Sweeney family settled in Whitewater, WI after immigrating from Ireland to NY in 1850. Anne Sweeney married James Clinton and lived in Whitewater in the 1850's. He died when the children were quite young. After a short time living in Illinois some of the family moved to Skagway Alaska in the late 1800's and eventually to King(s) County, Washington. Any relation?

Hello,

I had 2 messages in my email yesterday..yours and Mari's. Very strange day for me as I am helping my gdaughter do school assignment on Heritage..had the files pulled and spread out on my table.. Had just been looking over some of those. Then opened my email and found the posts. "Twilight Zone" time for me.. as those Irish "ghosts" of the Sweeney/Donohoe were floating around !!! Look for a post by Mari at about the same time as your's of yesterday and of my reply today.
Keep in touch

Dear Mari,

I have tried to contact you in the past....and now with your new post.. this makes for an interesting connection. Most of my ancestors on both my dad's and mom's families were from the Donohoe's (my dad)in Holt county, NE(O'Neill) and the Sweeney's (my mom)in Custer County (Merna). The same connections are also with both families losing men in the Lead and Keystone areas of SD. On the Donohoe side with ggmother's brother, John Biggins and Miles Sweeney (gr Uncle of my mom's). We live in NE and as I had earlier mentioned of trying to find a grave site of Miles.

Hi Diana & all,
My ggf was also MILES Sweeney. From what I've found he was born in IRE (don't know where) 1839. Came to the US 18?? lived in MI, married Ellen EGAN (from WIS) moved to Holt county, O'Neill, NEB in 1879. He went to S. Dakota to work in Homestake mine & was killed in an accident on 3/7/1880. We went there - Lead, SD - no grave marker but his name is listed on a memorial to all miners killed in the area. He had 6 kids - last one being my gf John Myles. My mom was Margaret. If you think there may be a connection please reply. Thanks, Mari

You may want to talk to the Sweeney's in the Dubuque and Galena areas. I find it fascinating that those areas have people with the same surname as my ancestors and yet not be related. I have found out that my ancestor didn't have the third e in his name and lived in those states at those times.

Looking for my Minnesota Sweeney roots in Ireland

I can't find my Sweeneys in Ireland until I find out where they came from...hoping someone out there will be related to James Hugh Sweeney and have a bit more info that his sister's descendants have. I would love to hear from "cousins".

My 3rd g-grandmother, Mary, and her brother, Hugh James or James Hugh Sweeney emigrated from Ireland in 1839. I found passengers matching their description on the HIBERNIA sailing from Liverpool to New York, landing on May 23, 1839. They must have sailed from Belfast to Liverpool, then to New York. I don't know how to find out if there are records from their trip from Ireland to Liverpool :-(

Oral tradition has it that they were Catholics and that they came from Belfast, County Antrim. However, James inherited the family farm at age 12 and had to wait until he was 18 to sell it, which he did. He came to America with a lot of money because he bought about 160 acres of land in Wisconsin, near Potosi. Researchers in Ireland tell me there were no farms in Belfast and few in County Antrim. I've been told that Catholics were "underground" in those days so church records of births/deaths for my Sweeneys are not likely to be found but I need a town/parish first anyway. I was told it will be near impossible to find the will that named James/Hugh inheriting the land.

James Hugh Sweeney married Martha Evans. They moved to what would become West St. Paul, MN in about 1850.

Mary married Wilson C. Morrison in Dubuque, IA, lived in Potosi, WI and then the family moved to St. Paul, MN in 1848. I did not include Mary's descendants below.

Here is the Sweeney family tree.

1-Unknown SWEENEY b. , Ireland, d. Abt 1829
+UNKNOWN m.
I talked to my Grandmother this weekend, & she said that our Marjorie remained single all her life. Her Brother Edward had three children: John, Edward & my Grandmother- Grandma was the only one who had children.
I'm not sure about Micheal's 2 half brothers, though.... Grandma said that her Father's family rarely talked about each other.
There were a lot of Sweeney's in MN, though. If you haven't Checked the MN Historical Society website, yet they have a number of Death certificates you can search & order online.
Good Luck!

The Father you mentioned was Darby Henagan Sweeney, Swinney,
Sweeny, ect. Some of the Sweeneys dropped the Henagan, others dropped the Sweeney last name. I have been looking for Sweeneys for a few yrs. also. I only have Zachariah Sweeney whose wife is listed as DARKIS or DORCAS. All from S.C. area and unfortunatly were slave owners who listed the slaves as property in their wills by name. This is a real puzzle to figure out. Thank You Ann Gowdey Beck

Hey there, did you get any further on this Sweeney family research? My Grandmother on my mothers side was a Marjorie Sweeney, not the same one but certainly a Minnesota Sweeney. Maybe Marjorie or Edwards daughter? Pretty sure she passed away in the late 80's or early 90's. She had a few children, Edward, Brenda and Shirley are the names I know off hand.

If you know more please let me know. Thanks and take care!
-JW

michael and maggie sweeney

I'm looking for connections to my great great grandparents - michael and maggie sweeney. The lived in Phila. 6th Ward in late 1880's.I believe Michael married Maggie Jordan Sweeney in 1875, and it was his second marriage. First wife , Sarah, died about 1870. Michael and Maggie had several children- Maggie(my great grandmother who married William Morford in 1895), Julia, Helen, as well as raising Michael's first children. Any connections?

Looking for Parents of Daniel J. Sweeny b. 1822 Vt d. 1894 NE

I am seeking information on the Parents of Daniel J. Sweeny, B. March 25, 1822 in Pt. Alburgh, VT. D. Dec. 3, 1894 in South Bend (Cass county) Nebraska. Census records indicate his parents were born in Ireland and may have immigrated around 1810. According to his published bio, His family moved to Jamestown, NY in 1836 and then to Michigan in 1838. He married Mary Dover Grout, Daughter of Salmon Grout and Lucinda Kidder in 1843 and they had seven children: James, Sophia, Gustavus, Edward Solomon, Mary Alice, Rosa Ada (who married my Great Grandfather George Marcellus Stine) and Jessie Daniel Sweeny.

If anyone recognizes this family, I would love to share information.
