NEW BOSTON, Ill. - Harry J. Swiger, 80, of New BOSTON, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000 at his home.
Funeral Services will be at Trimble Funeral Home in Aledo, Ill. The Rev. Richard Bishop will officiate. Burial will be at New BOSTON Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the New BOSTON Ambulance.
Mr. Swiger was born on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1920, the son of Harry and Dorothy Fell Swiger. He was united in marriage to Carol Grace Ferguson on Feb. 3, 1946, at the New BOSTON United Methodist Church.
He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, surviving Pearl Harbor on the U.S.S. Oaklahoma, the landing of Italy and Invasion of Normandy. On all three invasions his ship was destroyed, and he survived.
He retired in 1980 from the Rock Island District Corp of Engineers, Lock and Dam No. 17, after many years of dedicated service. He also worked construction in the area. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the New BOSTON United Methodist Church.
He was a naturalist, enjoying fishing, hunting, and woodworking. He enjoyed making birdhouses and watching birds. He also had a special dog, Amy Lou.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Grace; one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Judy Swiger of Aledo, two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Scott Oak of Carpentersville, Ill., and Natalie Thompson-Giles and her husband, Doug, of New Boston; 11 grandchildren, Kris Swiger and their son, Daniel Weston Swiger; Jennifer and Scott Olson; Jacqueline Swiger; Benjamin, Andrew and Cody Oak; Josiff Thompson; Elizabeth Giles-Logel; Haley, Scott and Krissy Giles; and one great-grandson, Daniel Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Howard; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Eloise and Herb Ferguson and Mary and Guy Richwine.
