I have too much information to exchange in this forum. I have a fairly complete tree from William E. Swindel and Catherine Anderson through the 1930 census as well as many marriages and tombstones afterward.

As to the Hollands--the name is familiar as Hollands have married into several of my lines; but I can't pull up any details off the top of my head. I am working frantically on my web site with the Roe line to get rid of the broken links.

Contact me directly at droe@detiaroe.com. I have reserved that strictly for genealogical purposes.

4 pieces of Swindle documentation would make the BEST Christmas ever!!!

Hi All!

I am a Swindle descendant trying desperately to piece together a few missing puzzle pieces. I am trying to find proof of a few things, and if you have anything which might help, I would be indebted forever!

Specifically, this is the info I'm looking for. I have the information, but need to find documentation to confirm:

1. I'm trying to find proof that John Sylvester Swindle was the son of Wylie and Rebecca Swindle. John Sylvester was my grandfather's grandfather and this would be somewhere around Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

2. That Wylie (mentioned above) was the son of John and Nancy (Daley) Swindle.

3. That Michael Swindle (Culpepper County, VA 1770's) was the son of Timothy and Rebeckah (Crees) Swindle.

4. Michael Swindle (above) married Elizabeth Utz. I need documentation for either the date and place of birth or the death.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I hope everyone has a great holiday!!! I am also open to help in locating a professional genealogist to help me track down these items, but am on a limited budget (as we all know, this is not a cheap hobby once you get in so deep! LOL)

Hi Emma, I was so excited to see your posting!!! Do you have someone who could participate in our Swindle DNA project? It has to be a male, so maybe your dad or a brother--any man in your family carrying the surname could do the test. They just swab the inside of their cheek and send it in to the testing company. If they match with the men who've already tested, then they all share a common ancestor! This would definitely help you in tracing your Swindle heritage!!!! Here's the main site, and also the order page site. And by the way, they are having a sale on their test kits, but only through Sept 30th.

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/swindle

https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=K11840&...

Susan
HI, I have some info and pictures of John Sylvester Swindle family, b. 1825. I was given this info by Bernice Moore, who lives in Ariz., John S. Swindle was her g-g-grandfather. I was trying to tie this family with my swindle relatives as they ended up living in the same area of Texas. Could not tie them together, although I feel sure there is a connection somewhere. Anyway, if you get this message as I see yours is quite old, get in touch and I will be glad to give you the info I have.

Aquilla father was Dillion j. (or G.) Collins, her mother's name was Angelina, don't have her maiden name.
Aquilla was John Sylvester Swindle 2nd wife. They had children. I have there names, birth dates and some death dates. if you would like these let me know. I have a note that the name Swindle is Holand Dutch and were found sailing on ship-Phoenix- from Rotterdam Nov. 2, 1752 were husband & wife, Persy Swindle married to Ethel B. Wolcott.
My family tree line are also Swindle's but I have not been able to tie them to these Swindles, I was given this info by a friend, who was a decendant of Joe Swindle, son of John Sylvester's by his 1st wife. These Swindle's settled in Alabama, and mine settled in Georgia. But I do know some of both familes ended up in east Texas in the same general area. you may e-mail me at dixielee1938@sbcglobal.net Hope this has been helpful.
I reread that article last night and it does not specifically say Asa was John's son. That was my assumption since it does say it looks as if Asa inherited the 40 acres John owned. The tax lists shows him living on that property in 1836, John having died about 1832. Also there appears to be an Asa son of Christopher and the Asa of Benton County. I 1850 Asa is still in Benton County.

There is a reference in "High Tides", a publication of the Hyde County North Carolina Genealogical Society which says "it is believed" that Asa was son of John, as he was living on John's property after John had died. It also idicates that John was the son of William Swindle Sr. of Hyde County, as was Caleb, father of Christopher of White County. I know this is not proof postive but it is probably all that exists. If you send your mailing address to brackettwilliam@yahoo.com I will mail you a copy of the reference.

I put a wrong date for the birth of Mary (Howe) Swindle in this paper. It is near the end about three parpagraps from the end. It appears from census records that both her and James Swindle were born between 1765 and 1775.

James Swindle & Mary Howe debate

This paper was written in July of 2008 in an effort to determine who may have been the father of Thomas Swindle, b. 1811 and who lived in Benton County, Tennessee. Some believe his father was James Swindle. Who was James Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee and was there more than one person in that location by that name in that time period (1800-1860). Census records were searched for spellings: Swindle, Swindal, Swindell, Swindel and Swindall in the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. I am also attempting to determine their relationship to Mary Howe, who is thought to be James’s wife, and William Howe also of Benton County, Tennessee in this same time period.

In her book The Swineherders, 1987, Jena F. Hopwood relates how Louise Memory Covington, a professional genealogist, researched the Swindle-Howe connections. Jena says that according to Mrs. Reba Banker, a Swindle descendant, there is a story passed down from Swindell members of former generations and it goes: “ In the late 1700’s Lord and Lady Howe came from England on their honeymoon. After a long and difficult crossing of the ocean, they landed at Cape Fair. (Cape Fair is now known as Cape Fear as proven by history). Lady Howe was so frightened she would not return to England. Lord Howe returned to England to settle their business. While in England, he contracted pneumonia and died before seeing his son, William Howe Jr. Lady Howe married Seth Swindell and had sons Seth, John, Nathan, William and Thomas.” Some researchers say that this is one in the same as the Mary Howe that married James Swindle. It is not clear who this Lord William and Lady Howe were or which Swindle, Seth or James, she might have married.

Louise Covington stated in her research that: “Existing records reveal that Thomas Swindell was a direct descendant of Job Howe Sr., a well educated, influential and wealthy rice planter who resided at his palatial home on the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County and spent his summers on the coast near Wilmington.” She goes on to say: “Job Howe’s grandfather was of the noble house of Howe in England. He came to America with the Yeaman colony to settle Clarendon, a proposed North Carolina colony on the Cape Fear River in 1665. When the Clarendon settlement did not survive due to trouble with the Indians, Howe fled to Charleston, South Carolina. Job Howe returned to the area when New Hanover County was formed in 1729. He was descendant of the original Howe, a lineal descendant of Sir John Yeaman, and married Sarah Moore, grand-daughter of James Moore, the governor of the Carolinas in 1670.” If you assume the reference to Lord and Lady Howe refers to this family then it would suggest there was a Lord William Howe, his son being William Howe Jr. and his grandson may have been this Job Howe. If you look at the other records the line may have been Job Howes of England, Robert Howes, Job Howes and then Job Howe Jr. Louise says that Mary Howe who married James Swindle was the daughter of this Job Howe Jr.

Records:

A Samuel Swindle appears on a “Tax list” in Bladen County, North Carolina in 1784. A Samuel Swindall appears in the 1790 census as Samuel Swendel in the Wilmington District of Bladen County. There is a document dated 07 Jun 1807 in Bladen County, North Carolina for a Samuel Swindall, which indicates that at the time of his death (1807) Samuel’s wife was named Mary. This document reads:

“State of North Carolina
Bladen County

Know all men by these presents that Samuel Swindall Sen. of the County and State aforesaid planter for the love good will and affection which I have and do bare for my well beloved wife Mary Swindall and for divers other good causes and considerations me hereunto moving have given and granted and do by these presents do give and grant unto the said Mary Swindall during her natural life four negroes to wit: Nan Cuffo Salim and Lucy together with the third part of my stock and household furniture which negroes and other property after her death shall be equally divided between my four sons Viz: Willis, Samuel, Henry and James Swindall which property I the said Samuel Swindall do for myself my heirs executors administrators and assigns warrant and forever defend unto them their heirs and assigns as above directed against any lawfull claim or claims but be it remembered that the said Samuel Swindall will have the use of said property during my natural life the same as tho’ this deed of gift had never been given and likewise be it remembered that the said Mary Swindall must not move the above mentioned property out of said County without the consent of my sons Viz: Willis, Samuel, Henry and James.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7th of June in the year of our Lord 1807.

Samuel Swindall (seal)

May Term 1808: This deed was proved by John High and ordered to be registered.

The 4 sons of Samuel were:

1. Willis Swindle who remained in Bladen/Columbus County, North Carolina and died there in 1824. Had sons, James and Samuel and daughters Marian and Florian. Three of these children appear later in Perry County, Alabama.

2. Henry Swindle who was living in Bladen/Columbus County in 1809 when he sold his property and is not seen after that time. He may be the Henry Swindle in the 1820 census of Greene County, Georgia.

3. Samuel Swindle who had sons Samuel and David and grandsons, Chester and John all of Bladen/Columbus County, North Carolina.

4. James Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee appears to have been another son of Samuel Swindell of Bladen/Columbus County, North Carolina. A James Swindle can be found in the 1810 and 1820 census of Columbus County, North Carolina. Samuel Swindell’s will includes a son named James.

Note: Columbus County separated off from Bladen County, North Carolina.

The 1810 census of Columbus County, North Carolina includes:

James Swindal and in his household were two males under 10 years of age, 3 females under the age of ten years and 1 female 26-45 years of age and four slaves. James’s age is not included in this census but it can be assumed he was between 26 and 45 years of age as was his wife. Using her age James would have been born between 1765 and 1783. Genealogical records give his birth year as about 1776 but it appears he was born before 1775.

Willis Swindal and in his household were one male 10-15 years of age, one male 26-45 year of age, one female under ten years of age, one female 10-15 years of age and one female 26-45 years of age and two slaves. Using this age range Willis would have been born between 1765 and 1783 also. These were brothers James and Willis Swindle, sons of Samuel Swindle.

There an abstract of a will for Willis Swindle in Columbus County, North Carolina dated 16 Aug 1824. In it he names a son as James Swindal. “August 16, 1824, Wife; Elizabeth Swindal. Son: James Swindal, £ 5 Sterling money. Daughter: Mary Hines, £ 5 Sterling money. To be sold to pay debts: two acres on the richland Branch called the Edwards land, 435 acres on boggy branch, & Sorrel mare & colt. Balance of money & land to be divided between wife Elizabeth Swindal, son Samuel Swindal (when he comes of age) & youngest daughters Marian Swindal & Florian Swindal. Exec: friend Col. Isaac Powell. Wit: Daniel Campbell, Jr., John Edwards & Lydia Edwards. CHS Baldwin, C.S.C.”

Willis was another son of Samuel Swindell, a brother of James and was also named in Samuel’s will. There is a notation from a genealogy done by Charlotte Hamilton in reference to the will of Willis Swindle, which reads “James Swindal (formerly of Col. Co., now of Perry County., AL & Agent of the heirs of Willis Swindal, dec’d., named Daniel Day in right of his wife, formerly Mary Ann Swindal & Flora Ann Swindal, both of Perry Co., AL) to William B. Roberson/Robeson … Fall Term 1846” This shows two individuals by the name of James Swindle in the same geographical location and same time period, James and his nephew James. This also appears to be James Swindle the son of Willis Swindle as it mentions his sisters, “Marian” and “Florian”.

The 1820 census of Columbus County, North Carolina includes:

James Swindle and in his household were three males under 10 years of age, one male 10-15 years of age, one male over 45 years of age, one female under 10 years of age, two females 16-26 years of age, one female 26-45 year of age and one female over 45 years of age. Using this age James was born before1775. This is the James Swindle who moved into Benton County, Tennessee by 1827 and was the brother of Willis Swindle.

Willis Swindal and in his household were one male under 10 years of age, one male 16-26 years of age, one male over 45 years of age, one female 10-16 years of age, one female 16-26 years of age and one female 26-45 years of age. Using this age Willis was born before 1775.

James Swindal and in his household were one male under 10 years of age, one male 16-26 years of age and one female 16-26 years of age. This appears to be the son of Willis Swindle and he would have been born between 1794 and 1804. This would be James son of Willis Swindle, seen later as James P. Swindle.

The 1820 census of Humphreys County, Tennessee includes:

John Swindle and in his household were one male 10-16 years of age, one male over 45 years of age, one female 10-16 years of age and one female over 45 years of age. Note: This part of Humphreys County (Chalk Level) became part of Benton County. This individual served in the Revolutionary War.

There is a deed in the 12th District of Tennessee from 1825, which reads:

“John Swindle as of Samuel Moore enters by virtue of certificate warrant No. 6640 for 40 acres of land in the 12th surveyors district in range 7 section 3 beginning 1 mile & 120 poles west of the east boundary of said section & range running north 64 poles thence west 100 poles thence south 64 poles thence east for compliment May 25th 1825 John Swindle Loct” This area also became part of Benton County when it separated from Humphreys County.

The 1830 census of Humphreys County, Tennessee includes:

James Swindle and in his household were three males 10-15 years of age, one male 15-20 years of age, one male 20-30 years of age and one male 50-60 years of age, 3 females 5-10 years of age, one female 10-15 years of age and one female 20-30 years of age. Where was his wife? Usually an omission like this indicates the wife had died. Using this age range James would have been born between 1770 and 1780. There is a record I have seen that Mary (Howe) Swindle had a probate record dated 25 Jan 1825. This is interesting as it is not normal for a wife, who had died, to have a probate file before her husband had died. Some researchers indicate that James Swindle died in Benton County, Tennessee about 1850. Looking at the compliment of children and their ages this is obviously James Swindle of the 1820 Bladen County, North Carolina Census.

John Swindle and in his household were one male 20-30 years of age and one male 70-80 years of age. This is the Revolutionary War Veteran.

There is a deed for James Swindle in the 12th District of Tennessee from 1827. It reads:

“State of Tennessee
12th District

James Swindle by virtue of the right of occupancy enters two hundred acres of land in Range 8 section 2 beginning 90 poles East of a point 800 poles north 28 West from the north east corner of 100 acre entry in the name of Samuel P McFull runs north 228 poles to a conditional line thence west 44 poles north 12 poles west 20 poles north 20 poles thence west for compliment July 20 1827 J M Alexander”

The 1840 census of Perry County, Alabama includes:

James Swindle and in his household were one male 60-70 years of age, one female 5-10 years of age, one female 10-15 years of age, two females 15-20 years of age and one female 60-70 years of age. James would have been born between 1770-1780. Was this the same James who was in Humphreys/Benton County, Tennessee in 1830? There was no James Swindle found in Tennessee in 1840.

There is a document in Benton County, Tennessee, which ties a James P. Swindle to Bladen/Columbus County, North Carolina. This record is in the Benton County Deed Book A, Vol. I, June 1830-April 1843 page 365 and reads: “Power of Attorney from James P. Swindal, James Marshbanks and John Blakely to Aaron Smith We, James P. Swindal, James Marshbanks and John Blakely of Benton county, do appoint Aaron Smith of Columbus county, state of North Carolina, as our true and lawful attorney, to act for us and in our name, to demand and receive from all persons indebted to us by note, account or otherwise in the state of North Carolina, Columbus county, the amount of our claims and receipts in our name, and in case of failure to pay to bring suit against the persons not paying. We also empower him to sell and convey to any person who will purchase the land which we have in North Carolina in Columbus or Bladen counties. Given under our hands and seals this 4th day of july 1842 Twst: John W. Utley Nathaniel Newry signed James P. Swindal, James Marshbanks John Blakely Power of Attorney was acknowledged in open court on the 4th day of July 1842, and registered on the same day. Signed G.R. Kelsey, Clerk and J.W. Utley, register”. James P. Swindle appears to be James Powell Swindle a grandson of Willis Swindle and the son of James Swindle and his wife Anne or Amy Powell.

The 1850 census of Severe Beat, Perry County, Alabama includes:

Mary Swindle, 57 years of age born in NC
Martha A. Swindle, 30 years of age born in NC
Mary A. Swindle, 24 years of age born in TN
Henrietta Swindle, 19 years of age born in TN
James H. Swindle, 2 years of age, born in AL
Jessee A. Swindle, 4 months old, born in AL

Note: If this Mary Swindle was the wife of the James Swindle of the 1840 census she is younger. Maybe the census taker recorded the incorrect age. It appears from the birthplaces and ages of the children they moved from Tennessee to Alabama after 1830. By 1850 James Swindle apparently moved to Florida with his new wife, Virginia Kershaw. There was no James Swindle found in Tennessee in 1850.

The 1850 census of Washington County, Florida includes:

James Swindle, 71 year of age born in NC

The 1860 census of Severe, Perry County, Alabama includes:

Mary Swindle, 70 years of age born in TN
Martha A. Swindle, 39 years of age born in TN
James H. Swindle, 10 years of age born in AL
Frances A. Swindle, 8 years of age born in AL
Robt J. Swindle 7 years of age born in AL
Mary E. Swindle 3 years of age born in AL

This Mary Swindle would have been born about 1790 in Tennessee.

The 1860 census of Washington County, Florida includes:

James Swindle 80 years of age born in NC (born about 1780)
Virginia Swindle, 35 years of age born in VA
Samuel Swindle, 14 years of age born in FL
George Swindle, 12 years of age born in FL
Thomas Swindle, 10 years of age born in FL
Euriah Swindle, 8 years of age born in FL
Francis Swindle, 6 years of age born in FL
Rebecca Swindle, 4 years of age born in FL
William Swindle, 1 year of age born in FL

It is reported that James and Virginia (Kershaw) Swindle had nine children together. This appears be the second family of James Swindle. Ginger Ferguson believes that the story about Lord and Lady Howe relates to a much earlier time than this James Swindle and his first wife Mary Howe. Ginger believes the story but believes it happened in North Carolina at a earlier date. She also believes the Lord Howe of the story was the father of a William Howe who was the father of Job Howe of early North Carolina (late 1600’s).

A James Swindle was born before 1775 in North Carolina. Another James Swindle was born in Columbus County, North Carolina about 1794-1804. A James Swindle died 17 Oct 1861 in Washington County, Florida. It is believed a James Swindle, born before 1775, married Mary Howe, the daughter of Job Howe Jr. and that they were married in North Carolina before 1806. Mary Howe would have been born about 1780 in North Carolina. A Mary Swindle died in Perry County, Alabama and there is an indication that it was after the 1860 census and it appears she was born about 1790. A James Swindle died in Washington County, Florida. Genealogists say that James and Mary (Howe) Swindle had children:

Seth Swindle b. abt. 1807
John Swindle (no further records) The 1810 census indicates he was born before 1810
Thomas Swindle b. 09 Feb 1811 “came to Tennessee when 4 years old” (1815)
William E. Swindle b. abt. 1813
Nathan Swindle b. abt 1815

The 1830 census of Humphreys County, Tennessee also indicates there were five daughters who remain unnamed.

The above children were born in North Carolina.

and James and Mary Swindle of Perry County, Alabama had children:

Oliver R. Swindle b 10 Sep 1817
Griffin W. Swindle b. abt. 1819
Martha A. Swindle b. abt. 1821
Nepsie Swindle b. abt 1826
Mary A. Swindle b. abt. 1830
Henrietta Swindle b. abt 1831

The older children of this set appear to have been born in North Carolina and the younger 2 or 3 in Tennessee.

and James and Virginia Swindle of Washington County, Florida had children:

Samuel Swindle b. abt 1846
George Swindle b. abt. 1848
Thomas Swindle b. abt. 1850
Euriah Swindle b. abt. 1852
Francis Swindle b. abt. 1854
Rebecca Swindle b. abt. 1856
William Swindle b. abt. 1859.

These children were born in Florida.

Seth, Thomas, William and Nathan Swindle are all seen in Benton County, Tennessee records. A James Swindle is seen in a part of Bladen County, North Carolina, which separated off as Columbus County. By 1827 a James Swindle moved to a part of Humphries County, Tennessee, which separated off as Benton County. This is where Thomas, Nathan, Seth and William Swindle are found. The ages of this James Siwndel’s children in 1830 match those of the James Swindle of Bladen County, North Carolina in the 1820 census. A James and Mary Swindle and children are found in Perry County Alabama in the 1840 census. A James Swindle is found in Washington County, Florida by 1850.

Ginger Ferguson, who has postings on www.genforum.com/swindal gave me the Perry County, Alabama children’s names and alerted me to the fact that this James Swindle had moved to Washington County, Florida and remarried. Mary Swindle is seen in the 1850 and 1860 census of Perry County Alabama living with her children. It appears that James Swindle left his family in Perry County, Alabama, sold his property and moved on to Washington County, Florida by 1850. The 1850 census of Washington County, Florida indicates James was 71 years of age. Family history indicates James left Alabama with Virginia Kershaw who was a “full-blooded Indian”. One of Virginia’s descendants says that when James died his family “came down” and took everything Virginia had. The sale of James’s property in Perry County, Alabama states he was living in Washington County, Florida at the time of the sale. Some researchers feel that this James and Mary Swindle were the James and Mary (Howe) Swindle of Bladen County, North Carolina.

Here one has to ask were these men, by the name of James Swindle, all the same person or are we looking a two or more individuals? There were three persons by the name of James Swindle in Bladen County, North Carolina in 1820. One was James Swindle the son of Samuel Swindle and brother of Willis Swindle. The second was James Swindle the son of Willis Swindle and who may have married Anne or Amy Powell. The third was James P. Swindle son of James and Anne or Amy (Powell) Swindle. The age of the James Swindle in the 1860 census of Florida more closely matches the son of Willis Swindle than the age of Willis’ brother. The legal records link the James Swindle of Washington County, Florida to Perry County, Alabama. The legal records of Perry County, Alabama also link this James Swindle to Columbus County, North Carolina. The legal record for James P. Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee link him to Bladen/Columbus County, North Carolina. We have no proof of the name of the father of Seth, Thomas, William, John or Nathan Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee, so we have no proof their father was named James. The 1830 census of Humphreys County, Tennesee place a James Swindle there with children matching the age of these Swindle boys. The early census records prior to 1850 do not help us with children’s names. It is possible that James, son of Willis and his uncle, James son of Samuel got mixed up in Benton County, Tennessee and they appear to be one in the same person. It would be interesting to find death records of a James Swindle in Benton County, Tennessee but it does not exist. It appears that the James Swindle of Bladen County, North Carolina and then Benton County, Tennessee and then of Perry County, Alabama and then of Washington County, Florida could have been one in the same person based on the ages given in the census records, but I would guess they were not. If the James Swindle of Bladen County, North Carolina was born before 1775 he would have been at least 85 years of age in the1860 census. The 1850 census gives the age of the James Swindle in Washington County, Florida as 71 and the 1860 as 80, so he was not born before 1775 but about 1779or 1780. This James Swindle looks more like James the son of Willis Swindle rather than James the brother of Willis. It is possible that the James and Mary (Howe) Swindle I am looking for may have both died in Benton County, Tennessee, she in 1825 and he about 1837.

There is a family group record found at www.familysearch.org for a James Swindall who was born about 1776 in North Carolina. He married about 1802 to Anne or Amy Powell, daughter of Absolom and Mary (Stephens) Powell. One of James’s sons is seen as a James Powell Swindall, born about 1813. There is that legal record of James P. Swindle in Benton County that links him back to Balden County. This James Swindall born about 1776 appears to have been the son of Willis Swindle. Willis was the brother of James Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee. This James P. Swindle is the third James Swindle in the same geographical location during this same time period. There is a record of this James Powell Swindell at www.rootsweb.com and it indicates he was born, the son of James and Anne or Amy (Powell) Swindell, on 09 Jun 1803 in Bladen County, North Carolina and died on 13 Sep 1902 in Denton, Texas. It also shows he was married on 23 Dec 1843 in Montgomery, Alabama.

There is another genealogy that indicates that Thomas Swindle of Benton County who married Miriam Anderson was the son of Christopher Swindle of the1820 census of Sparta in White County, Tennessee. I looked at the ages of the Swindel families of Asa, Cason, Caswell, Christopher, George, Holowell, John and Thomas Swedel/Swindel/Swindle in this census and none of them have four sons under the age of 16 years in their household. The Thomas Swendel in this census would have been born before 1775 and Thomas of Benton County, Tennessee was born in 1811 so they are not one in the same. The only male in Christopher’s household during this census was 10-16 years of age in 1820. None of these family groups seem to match the one I am looking for. There is a William How in this census and he may be one in the same as the William Howe associated with the Swindle families of Benton County Tennessee about 1840. It is interesting that Thomas Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee did name a son Asa. John Swindle, the Revolutionary War Veteran, who moved into Benton County, Tennessee, reported being in White County before moving to Benton. Christopher and John also reported leaving Hyde County, North Carolina and moving into Orange County, North Carolina before moving on to White County, Tennessee. The White County, Tennessee Swindle families are descendants of the Hyde, County, North Carolina group and they are seen in their genealogies.

The 1820 census should hold a key. Thomas Swindle is reported to have “first come to Tennessee with his parents when he was four years old”. He was born in 1811 so that would make the year he came to Tennessee 1815. The only Swindle in Humphreys/Benton County Tennessee at that time was John Swindle, the Revolutionary War Veteran. If John was the father of Thomas there should be 4-5 young males between the ages of 5-13 in his household in 1820 and there were not. There was a Job Swindle in Wilson County, Tennessee in 1820 that had five sons in 1820, but only three of them were under 16 years of age. The James Swindle of the 1820 Bladen/Columbus County, North Carolina census had four sons and all were under 15 years of age, but it appears he was still in North Carolina. If Thomas’s story about his arrival in Tennessee is accurate perhaps they visited Tennessee, returned to North Carolina and returned to Tennessee later. A James Swindle of Bladen County North Carolina appears to be the father of Thomas Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee based on the census and genealogical records. James Powell Swindle (b. 1803) was too young to be the father of Thomas Swindle of Benton County, Tennessee so that eliminates him from the mix. That leaves James brother of Willis or James son of Willis Swindle. After looking at the records I believe James of Benton County, Tennessee was the brother of Willis who were sons of Samuel Swindle of Bladen County, North Carolina.

The other questions I have are, who was or was there even a Lord William Howe who died in England in the “late 1700s”? Was William Howe of Benton County, Tennessee his son? Was it Mary Howe who married James Swindle or was that her married name? William Howe bought land next to and on the same day as Seth Swindle did in 1838 in Benton County, Tennessee. Was William Howe the half brother of Thomas, Nathan, Seth, William and John Swindle? Thomas and Nathan Swindle administered his will in 1843. James Swindle bought land in Benton County Tennessee as early as 1829. All the brothers, William, Thomas, Nathan and Seth Swindle are all found in the records of Benton County Tennessee as is William Howe. If there was a John Swindle in Benton County who was also a brother of this group I have not found him. Seth Swindle moved on to Mississippi by 1840. Was there a Seth Swindle who was their father and was he the step-father of William Howe?

William and Catherine Howe lived in Benton County, TN in 1840. Their children were: Emzley M. Howe born about 1820, Emzala Howe, Zebedee Howe, Arzilvan Howe, Amenzel Howe, Perlinza Howe, Perzilla Howe and Perezale Howe. I am interested in the ancestors of this family. I would also like to know if anyone knows where these children's names come from? William Howe was born 1780-1790 and died about 1843. What was William’s wife, Catherine’s maiden name? Was she a Swindle? Emsley and Zebedee Howe claim they were born in Tennessee about 1818 and 1820. Emsley also indicates in the 1880 census that his father (William) was born in North Carolina and his mother (Catherine) was born in South Carolina. Since we have seen the Swindle family came from North Carolina it is not likely Catherine was a Swindle.

These census records of his sons indicate William Howe was in Tennessee in 1820. The only person of similar name I could locate was a William How in the 1820 White County, Tennessee census in Sparta. This is interesting because in Sparta there were also, Asa, Cason, Caswell, Christopher, George, Holowell, John and Thomas Swindel. One genealogist, as noted above, believes that Thomas Swindle of Benton County was the son of this Christopher Swindel.

The 1820 census of White County Tennessee includes:

William How and in his household were one male under 10 years of age, one male 26-45 years of age and one female 16-26 years of age. William would have been born between 1775 and 1794. Assuming the female was his wife she would have been born between 1794 and 1904. The age of this son would fit with that of Emsley Howe of Benton County, Tennessee born about 1818.

Note: There was a Captain William Howe or Howes in the 1816-1818 Tax Lists of White County, Tennessee. It is unclear as to who he was.

The 1830 census of Humphreys County, Tennessee includes:

Joseph Howe and in his household were one male 20-30 years of age, one male 5-60 years of age, one female 10-15 years of age and one female 50-60 years of age. Joseph would have been born between 1770 and 1780.

William Howe and I his household were two males under the age of 5 years, one male 5-10 years of age, 2 males 10-15 years of age, one male 40-50 years of age, one female 30-40 years of age. William was born between 1780 and 1790.

Note: Part of Humphreys County became Benton County, Tennessee.

State of Tennessee William Howe by virtue of the occupant law of Said State
Benton County	enters … acres of land as his occupant claim in Said county range seven & section two beginning Sixty four poles North & one hundred and eight poles West – of the north west corner of Seth Swindles occupant survey runs thence north 200 poles thence east 160 poles thence south & for compliment Sept 18th 1837
W.. First that the doctor be paid it being the only debt he owed on earth. Second that his wife Catherine Howe have all his effects, goods, chattels, lands and tenements during her natural life time or widowhood to do as she pleases with and at her death or marriage, the whole of his effects, goods, chattels, lands and tenements be equally divided between all his children. It is therefore ordered by the court that the said Katherine Howe have letters of administration upon the estate of William Howe deceased with a nuncupative will of the said William Howe deceased annexed to be Made out in due form of law when required.
Issued 6th Feby. His age, however, would seem to preclude him being her son as he was close in age to Mary. Also wills that include Mary Howe, daughter of Job Howe, Jr. do not include a brother named William. Perhaps William and Mary Howe are not related except by coincidence.

In the 1830 census of Humphries County Tennessee there is an interesting grouping for these individuals:

In section four of that census you will find Joseph Howe on page 310 and James Swindle on page 311.

In section seven of that census you will find William Howe, John Swindle and John Anderson on page 324.

In James Swindle’s household were three males 10-15 years of age, one male 15-20 years of age, one male 20-30 years of age and one male 50-60 years of age, 3 females 5-10 years of age, one female 10-15 years of age and one female 20-30 years of age in 1830.

In Joseph Howe’s household were one male 20-30 years of age one male 50-60 years of age, one female 10-15 years of age and one female 40-50 years of age in 1830.

In William Howe’s household were two males under 5 years of age, one male 5-10 years of age, 2 males 10-15 years of age, one male 30-40 years of age and one female 20-30 years of age.

Looking at these ages Joseph Howe is about the same age as James Swindle. William Howe appears to be about ten years younger. Were Joseph Howe and /or William Howe relatives of Mary (Howe) Swindle? She did have an uncle named Joseph Howe who was a brother of Job Howe Jr. Mary (Howe) Swindle would have been born about 1800-1810, William Howe would have been born about 1790-1800 and Joseph Howe was born about 1780-1790.

Looking at the early deeds for these individuals in Benton County, Tennessee you can find that John Swindle, the Revolutionary War Veteran settled in district three on 40 acres in 1825. The man believed to be his son, Asa Swindle, owned the same 40 acres and added to it in 1837, also in section three. Since there is no deed for the 40 acres to Asa it appears he inherited it. The early census records only show one son living with John Swindle.

James Swindle entered his deed in 1827 in district two. Thomas and Seth Swindle also obtained land in this district in 1837. Their ages match those of the sons of James Swindle. This James Swindle was a son of Samuel Swindle of Bladen County, North Carolina.
The 1850 cenus of Benton County includes George and Elizabeth Swindle. They are living next door to his father Asa Swinlde. This Asa Swindle is believed to have been the son of John Swindle the Revolutinary War Veteran who was in this area by 1820. He is believe to have been the son of William Swindle Sr. of Hyde County, North Carolina.

John Anderson will 1859-Benotn County TN-Swindle connections

John Anderson’s will is on file in Benton County and is dated 13 March 1859. It reads: “In the name of God Amen I John Anderson make this my last will and testament. It is my will for my wife Elizabeth Anderson to have all of my real Estate and personality her life time and then at her death it is my will for all of the estate to be equally divided between Catherine Swindle Mariam Swindle G.C. Anderson, Isaac Anderson, J.C. Anderson Elizabeth Swindle & Enoch Anderson’s part to be Equally divided between John R. Anderson Cainilee Anderson heirs of Enoch Anderson and Seney Anderson, my daughter to have fifty dollars more than any of the above named children also my just debts and funeral expenses to be paid out of my Estate and Isaac Anderson executor of this will This 13 day of March AD 1859.” Signed John Anderson and witnessed by W.W. Davidson and M. Edwards. This will is on page 376 of the Benton County, Tennessee Will Book. Does anyone know which Swindle his daughter Elizabeth married. Was she the Elisabeth Swinlde wife of Seth Swinlde of Mississippi (1860)? I know Miriam married Thomas Swindle and Catherine Married his borther William E. Swindle. Seth and Nathan were their other two brothers. Nathan did have children (1840s) so maybe she married him?
Any information obtained from the internet must be taken with a grain of salt because of transcription problems. Only if there is an image of the actual document can any faith be put in the information. That is the main reason for my project.

I searched (and got) marriage records in Allen Co., KY; Wilson Co., TN; and Smith Co., TN. Still need to look in Sumner and Trousdale Co., TN; pretty sure there are some there; but probably later ones.

The earliest record I could find in Macon Co. was 1901. However, the dates for many earlier marriages are on the internet. These dates had to have come from somewhere--probably old bible records. I'm hoping whoever has them will be willing to share for the good of all Swindle researchers.

His daughter Ferlissa Ann Swindle was my g grandmother.

Since I wrote this, I've been to Benton Co., TN and have lots more information. I expect to get back there again this summer for more research. I also received some internet information that this George Swindle was the son of Asa Swindle who came from White Co., TN, and was probably the son of Christopher C. Swindle. If this is so, the connection would be all the way back to John Swindle and Mary McPherson.

What evidence is there that Asa is John's son? I have census records for Asa in White Co., TN in 1820, Carroll Co., TN in 1830 and Benton Co., TN in 1840 and 1850. Asa was next door to Holloway Swindle in White Co. and Carroll Co. lending credence to the claim that they were brothers, although they might have been cousins. Holloway stayed in Carroll Co. in 1840, but I think he was in Gibson Co. by 1850.

I have an 1800 census record for Beaufort Co., NC that I think is the Christopher who went on to White Co., TN. It shows 2 males under 10 years of age which would fit for Asa and Hollowell. However, the birthdate I have for Holloway has him being born 2 years before Christopher and Anna supposedly married. The marriage date is a little suspect when you consider the 1800 census also shows a female under 10 and one 10-16. And, of course, there is also the problem of assuming that all children listed are theirs and not related in some other way.

I don't know when the John who went to Humphreys Co. (Benton Co.) was born (he was listed over 45 is 1820). I have an 1800 and 1810 census record in Rockingham Co., NC for a John Swindle who was over 45 in both censuses. Neither of these censuses shows males of Asa's age.

It's very difficult trying to figure these things out when census records list only ages and not names.
I am trying to put together a comprehensive tree for the descendants of John Swindle and Mary McPherson of Wake Co., NC with appropriate documentation. I am currently working on the descendants of Pelege Spencer Swindle of Macon Co., TN. When I started, I downloaded several gedcoms which gave marriage dates for many of his children and grandchildren. However, when I went to Macon Co., I found that the courthouse had burned down about 1900 and there were no records left before that. I am looking for photographs or scans of any documents that give proof of these marriage dates. Any help would be most appreciated.

I am researching William Thomas Swindle who was born in Alabama and probably died in Noxubee Co. Mississippi. On the 1880 Census he says that his parents were both born in Alabama. The only family I can find that is consistent with all of this is the the William Swindle discussed in this thread from Walker Co., AL. I think he might be W. T.'s father. Do any of you that research this family have any information that might help clear up this question? Written family notes from an old photo album have W. T.'s birth and death dates as 10/25/1834 - 12/18/1883. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Macon Co., TN Swindles

You and I have corresponded before. Please let me know what luck you have! I descend from Peleg's daughter Martha D. Swindle. Some people have her married to Charles Meadors, but I have no idea where that info comes from! Her sister Sarah was possibly married to him though; see 1860 census C. Meador and S.E. Meador in Macon co, TN. Martha was married to Jessie GEORGE, but I don't have a marriage date for them. It appears sometimes they lived over the state line in Kentucky, where at least one child was born. You might want to search the surrounding counties of both TN and KY for marriage records.

Re: Swindle/Knight

My roots are in Southeast Georgia, and your inquiry re. Wayne County, the surname Knight and the initials CES triggered my curiosity. There were only a few Swindle’s in Southeast Georgia following the Civil War, as the father and two sons perished serving in that conflict. Four sons survived the war, and William Swindle relocated to Wayne County from Liberty County. However, none of William’s sons, or his Stafford stepsons, had the initials CES. William’s brother, James Henry Swindle, had a son named James S. Swindle (B: 07/13/1867, D: 1919) who married a Catherine C. Knight, and they produced a large family with many living in Tattnall County, Georgia. The grandsons of William Swindle moved from Wayne County and two of them, Daniel Stafford Swindell and James Frederick Swindell, operated the Swindell Paper Company in Athens, Georgia.

Sorry I couldn’t nail this down, but the identity of C.E.S. is still a mystery. But, I had fun trying - and if I find any who fit the criteria I'll let ya know.

Gary A.
Descendants of Lucius Swindle and Jennie F. Whitson

I am seeking the descendants of Lucius Swindle and Jennie Whitson of Oakman, Walker Co. Alabama. I, myself, am a descendant of Jennie Whitson's sister, Nancy Queenie Whitson. Queenie married Jesse Bell Dunn. They had 4 kids, John T. Annie Bell, Maude, and Margaret. My great grandmother was Maude who married Charlie C. Mouchette of Lamar Co., Alabama. Until I did the family genealogy we did not realize that Queenie, Lovie, Jennie, and a brother n Frances Marion were orphaned as young children. I am curious who raised the children. Would love to make an updated and correct family tree for the descendants of John Wheeler Whitson and Sarah B. Lollar...maybe someday even have a family reunion???
