Re: Early Vandiver, etc. Marriages, Part 1

A recent post to the Hall list showed a Vandiver marriage for Eunvio Vandiver and Elizabeth Swinford. My data, and data on the Harrison County, Kentucky, GenWeb site shows the following info and a different first name for the Vandiver in question. I am not on the Hall list, but posted this message to the Hall message board in hopes it is gatewayed to the list.

VANDIVER, Eunom and Elizabeth SWINFORD, bond date: December 14, 1819, married December 2?, 1819.

My main research line on this branch is the Swinford line.

Carolyne

Anyone have any info on the family of W.H. Swinford (b. abt 1854 TN) m. to Sallie Maggie Potts (b. 30 Oct 1850 AL, d. 1 Jan 1894 in Pottsboro, Grayson Co. TX); they had at least one child, Clara Z. Swinford (b. abt 1879 AL). I'd appreciate any leads. I am especially interested in what happened to Clara and if there were any other children.
I found Amy Craig, living with her second husband Thomas Craig, living in the same county in Kentucky (Laurel) with various Walden step-children in both the 1920 and 1930 US Federal Census. It was hard to locate the Waldens living in the household in 1920 since the index has them transcribed as "Walken", not Walden.

I wasn't able to find anything referencing what happened to Thomas Walden, but given the timeframe it is possible he died in WWI.

Unfortunately I'm in the process of moving and can't get to my computer right now to provide specifics.

Lee Swinford
Plano, TX
Re: info on grandmother

Based on the information supplied in Carol Frazier's post, the most likely person to be the John Swinford, born circa 1820 and living in Lauren County, Kentucky is John Amos Swinford, the son of Reuben Swinford and Sarah Hughes. This John died in 1913 in Laurel County, Kentucky. He was married to Mary C. Bozeman, also known as Polly. The Bozeman surname is sometimes written as Boseman.

While it is possible that John could have sired Amy at roughly age 61, it is also possible that she is the daughter of one of sons.

He had two sons, one was Reuben Amos Swinford, also known as Rube. He was born 14 May 1850 in Georgia. He died in Rockcastle, Kentucky. The other known son is John R. Swinford, born circa 1852.

The time period of Amy's birth makes her hard to pin down her parents, since she won't show up in any census records until the 1900 census that Carol posted. I do feel sure though that she is either the daughter or granddaughter of John Amos Swinford.

Carolyne
Carol Swinford Frazier answered your post via the Swinford mailing list. She forgot to post it to the board. Here it is. I will post additional information separately.

Carolyne

----------
Source: SWINFORD@rootsweb.com
Subject: Re: [SWINFORD] info on grandmother

Hi,

I found this at Ancestry.com:

Amy Swinford, born July 1881, Rockcastle, KY. One spouse listed,
Thomas Walden, born November, 1878 in TN, died December 12, 1950 in
Laurel, KY. (His parents are also listed; if you would like that
information, I can send that too.)

One child, Ethel May, is listed at this site. She was born in 1904
and died in 2005. There is more information about her, too.

I can not give you the name of the submitter of the above
information, but I can help you contact that person (via Ancestry.com)

I found this in the census records:

In the 1900 census Amy is living with her husband Thomas Walden in
Fariston, Laurel Co. KY. She is listed as being born in KY, with her
father being born in S. C. and her mother in KY. They have been
married zero years, which means they have been married less than one
year. She has had no children at that time. Thomas was born in TN,
and his father in TN and his mother in KY. He is a farmer on rented
land and Amy has no occupation. William and Elizabeth Walden, who
are most likely Thomas's parents (the family tree at Ancestry.com
says they were William and Elizabeth and lived in Fariston for the
1900 census, are on the same census page.)

Amy and Thomas are living in London, Laurel Co., KY, for the 1910
census. Thomas is still a farmer. They have been married for 11
years. This time, Amy's father is listed as born in N. C. Amy has
had five children, four are living: Mattison 9, Ethel M., 5, George,
4, and Steven, 1 and 6/12 . John Swinford is listed next, in a
separate household, born in S. C. age 81, widowed, parents born in S.
C.; his occupation is listed as Grandparent, so I am guessing he is
Amy's fathter. John Swinford has a 13 year old grandson, John
Chasteen, living with him.

There is this information from the Social Security Death Index: Amy
Craig, born 04 Jul 1880, died Jan 1978. Her last residence is listed
as Harlan, Harlan Co., KY. Her social security number was,
402-72-5313, issued in Kentucky.

Thomas Walden was born in TN; died 13 December 1950,Laurel, Kentucky.

I am not very familiar with the Swinfords from North and South
Carolina; perhaps someone else can help you with that.

Carol
Interested in bible page....where in NC? I'm on way to Raleigh in last part of Oct....will stop at archives. James had land near Statesville, NC....did not get deed in 70's. Must have just missed you in Newberry in the late 70's. I will be contacting Carolyne Gould as I believe that Levi's death as reported is not the 1790 Levi. He ended up in Tennessee, remarried in 1841 and was the father of my GG grandfather. He died in 1856 according to a deposition I have from his wife (2nd) and attested to by two daughters when she applied for civil war pension for their son named Levi from federal government. Thanks.

Hi Carolyne....my daughter's name is Carolyn. Thanks for info on Maryland....I also have a reference of a John Swinford in 1733 inPrince George County, List of taxables in Rock Creek Hunred. A John Swinford May 21 1751 Sundry Freeholders of Frederick County. and 1719 a James Swinford List of taxables in Patuxent Hundred. Think we are on to something. My direct line is John in Mo who was born in Athens, McMinn County, Tenn Jan 1, 1845 to Levi (remarried in 1842 to a Elizabeth Martha Young ) (marriage license reads Sanford Lewis????? who was John Sr 's son in SC in the 1790 census. Have land records which specifically state Levi was John Sr son. Back in late 70's was in Raleigh, NC and only found land record for a James Swinford near what is today Statesville, NC he then along with Elisha show up in Kentucky and the Kentucky line begins to grow. Perrin's History of Kentucky is a good book to read....Mickie Perrin was a Swinford and there are alot of Swinfords in it. What is the source of a John Swinford in NC? is it in colonial records? I missed it. Other sons' of John Sr were James, Issac (died 1817) and John Jr. Have to try and find out their children....they went to Georgia and then some to Alabama before Tennessee. In the 1790 census there is a Sam Sinford (Swinford). Both John and Sam indicated to be over 45. I have Samuel's probate and his heirs were Sarah (wife) and sons Phillip and Seth. He is a Revolutionary War patriot (not listed by DAR, but have records to try and correct this. Phillip died in the 1820's, his wife remarried...name was Dorcas Ritchey, secnd marriage. I hope to get all my information into some order for LDS (Mormans) by Christmas....I am not too speedy. I may have some additional information that may be of interest to your line, but have to sort it out. Will get back. Marlene S. Dent

I was in Monett and remember meeting your grandfather. I am confused though probably becuase they repeated the names so often. The first generation that we have had we believe Alexander, William, Jonathon (settled in Monett), Elias, Wiley (Butler Co), Bolen. It is believed but not proven that their father was James who came from SC and died in AR. I am related through Wiley and his son James William Wiley. Wiley also had sons John and Bolen and 2 sisters Mary and Nancy. Wiley remarried and had another child Vian or Vina. So I'm not quite sure which Jonathon you are talking about. If you can give me dates. I can sort it out.

Missi

Hi,

My computer crashed and I'm having to use someone else's. I believe I have copied all deeds and legal papers obtained in research of the Swinford family in the notes section for each individual. This is the link for Levi Swinford, which should connect you to everything else. I update my files at "crash time" --- thank goodness.

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o...

The records for Levi Swinford tell us his wife was Sarah, his mother Elizabeth aka Betsey and his father was John.

There are a couple of Johns with wives name Betsey or Elizabeth that are strong candiates to be Levi and Johnathan's parents. There is also a James. Somewhere in all those deed records filed under each person are the clues we need to connect all these SC, NC, TN, KY, IN, IL, etc. people. I should have printed everything out before the computer crash. Sigh.

My replies may be sporadic for a while, but I will check the boards and my email as often as possible.

Carolyne

John V Swinford 1838-1895 was not a Swinford. He married Lucinda Swinford, but his last name is HOOD. George E. Swinford 1886-1896 & J Wilson Swinford 1868-1895 are also not Swinford's. Their last name is also HOOD.
John Hood and Lucinda Swinford were married 01/05/1879 in Nodaway County, Missouri.
Also in that cemetery, close to the HOOD's are W F and Sarah J Swinford. (Wilson Frazier Swinford (Father) and (Mother) Sarah Jane Lee Swinford). W F and Sarah are Lucinda's parents.
The other Swinford's in Myrtle Tree Cemetery all (that I can see) came from Wilson Frazier and Sarah Jane Lee Swinford, one way or another.
Wilson Frazier Swinford was the son of John and Mary Ann (Polly)Adams Swinford. John was born in Kentucky and buried in Indiana and Mary Ann (Polly) is buried in Swinford Cemetery, Nodaway County, Missouri, where more of the Swinford's are buried.
Bill,
Thanks for your response!! I could kiss you!! What documentation do you have tying Richard to John?? That has been my assumption for the past year and half but have been unable to find a tangible link between the two!! Could you email me your sources at civilwarbride@earthlink.net

Thanks,
Carol

Jane,
Just got back from a genealogy conference in SLC and have found some additional information on Richard's family but nothing yet to definatively tie Richard to any parentage. Still looking but once I get my info compiled I will forward it to you.
Thanks for the support!!!
Carol

I am in Richard's direct line. He was my ggg grandfather. Richard's oldest son was Joseph and his son was Joseph Edmund. I was just trying to make the connection to John from Richard and have not found any documentation to substantiate my theory. It sounds as though you havent found anything concrete!!! I do know Richard and Jemima both died in Shelby county IN, but as of yet I havent found any death date, cemetery records or will or anything for these two!! I was hoping by finding something of that nature....perhaps it would mention something about his parents. Their son (my gg grandfather) Joseph married Elizabeth McCarty on the 24th of December 1850 in shelby county. I have their marriage bond but it says nothing of parents. I have all of Joseph's muster and Elizabeth pension records from the civil war and found lots of children info birth dates etc. but no parents!! Ugh! Richard and Jemima moved to shelby county In..from Harrison county KY between 1845 and 1850, they are on the 1850 census in shelby county In in addison township. I really am stuck with documentation to John!!
